  • Today we have a hands on review of the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens; basically the kit lens for the Nikon D7500. Nikkon claims this 55mm Lens is the compact, lightweight go-to lens for nearly any shooting situation. Also boasts a versatile 18-55mm zoom range ideal for wide-angle shots, portraits, fast action, HD video and much more. There's the ultra-fast, near silent autofocus powered by a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors). Two Aspherical glass elements provide outstanding optical performance. VR image stabilization ensures sharp photos, steady videos and enhanced low-light capabilities. But is it all true? Find out today in this Drive By Review!

    Who takes videos on auto focus?

  • @rickbrell8089
    @rickbrell8089 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The beauty of this lens is that it produces good image quality across a handy focal length and is a super lightweight, compact all round lens - excellent for walk around photos, at home, friends, relatives, street photography, landscapes - without lugging a heavy lens on an already heavy camera body. Super quiet auto focus works excellently for stills but not so good for movie close ups.

      @tollbar5468 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good quality? I have this lens on a D5300 and the results are the worst I have ever seen. I'm dumping my Nikon kit tout suite.

    This lens can be found for about $80-$90 new and is a remarkably good lens for that kind of price. I do not do much video with what I believe to be a stills camera, that is my D5600. Focus with this lens is really quick and image quality I would rate as very good. Giving a 35mm focal length equivalent of 27-82.5 mm this is one really handy lens to have and you can take lots of different scenes with it. I have a UV(0) filter that I keep on mine all the time to protect the lens which cost about half as much as the lens itself and a circular polariser for when I want that. Remember to use good cameraman techniques when using these “lesser” lenses and you’ll be surprised by the results. The Alabamie Kid.

    Try it with a new D7200 in video mode. The auto-focus works almost perfectly with the system used on the 7200.
    GREAT review, BTW. Covered what I wanted to see.

  • @pocketsofjhoy

    How do you focus it, im having a hard time with mine.

  • @TSGEnt
    @TSGEnt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Could the focus issue you experienced during video mode with the 7500 be the focus ability of the 7500 itself and not the lens? It seems very quiet however. I've got the AF-S 18-55 that came with my D5500 and that thing is just too noisy for video work or trying to be quiet in photo mode. How would you compare it to an AF-S lens?

    • @DriveByReviews
      @DriveByReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, the D7500 is definitely the AF issue. It has to flip up the mirror for LiveView/Video and is terrible in that mode. In photography mode the AF is fantastic. After this video I did a number of AF-S reviews. The AF on the AF-P lenses I tested is amazingly quiet in comparison. Bascially the AF-S lens models were unusable with any audio pickup on the camera, whereas the AF-P lenses AF noise was not picked up by any mic.

    • @Woonmoonsan
      @Woonmoonsan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ...reason I'm here is that I was looking for signs of "criticisms" of these lenses by Nikon...because...I have come to the "sad suspicion" that there may be no "perfect" units of this particular lens to be found...at all?
    I have the latest, AF-P version and it seemed good, although the VR wasn't as "striking" as I remember from my first 18-55 years ago, but, it seems to work (...I tested carefully)
    But what is a serious defect is that the lens won't focus perfectly and - importantly - uniformly...
    THIS would be the result if lens elements simply aren't aligned to absolute perfection...
    This will also result in another artifact - loss of geometric linearity...
    So you will have BOTH partial loss of focus AND non-linear geometry as a result of mis-alignment....
    This is such a pity - the assembly of the product deprives it from the promise of its - very sophisticated - lens elements...Botched assembly renders ALL the exquisite parts "useless" as a total...
    Can it be fixed..? - ...no...the only solution is replacement. But will Nikon do that...? - I fear not - they will take lens, "test" it and respond with the statement that "the lens performs within our specifications" and they will not "repair" and they will most likely not replace either....
    So all the lenses you find sold as "refurbished"....you should assume they are all slightly defect.
    Would the average person detect what I found as I processed images....in most cases probably not...
    I will contact seller, but it's more than 90 days after purchase, so seller won't help either...
    So the promise of this lens is great...the reality is "not great"....

      @jgknearlax4926 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pcmedico4688 ...another thing I have wondered about - why did Nikon bother to make it (the AF-P version) collapsible in the first place - why introduce such a design complication...it's not a bulky item...

    This lens needs to be tested in live view on the D3400, its natural home, for more reasons than just "budget" considerations. And no, not on the D5600, either. Ref.- Thom Hogan review(s) & dpreview comparisons (choose all 3 bodies + D3300 and compare).

    Hopefully, you get a chance to see this. Is there a way to set a D7500 to be on continuous focus in video mode? I can't seem to get this. I have to keep pressing the button halfway to refocus if I moved the camera unlike in picture mode where it automatically refocuses on the new subject. I appreciate any help.

      Yes, it's been awhile since I owned this camera but a bit before this video I posted some initial camera reviews and went over autofocus thoroughly. I believe it was a switch and I only found the large area AF tolerable. Manual ended up being my go to on the d7500
