Stumbled on this podcast. SFC Spooner was my 18C instructor back in 2001/02. Great instructor along with the rest of the Charlie instructors. Pappy was awesome, his Charlie book helped me out on my 1st OEF tour in 2002.

Thank God for this podcast. I was unable to join the military due to medical issues. Yet I finished college and grad school in seven years. I took the Bar Exam at 25 and passed. I started working as a prosecutor at the age of 24. I did all of this struggling with ADHD and depression. I may not have graduated BUDS but life is about being our best and driving through challenges. I'm glad Mr. Spooner got sober and got his PTSD TBI treated because they were just other challenges he pushed through.

Great interview. Tom and I were on the same Robin Sage team. We both went to 7th and would run into each other occasionally. We always had a good laugh over something stupid happening in the group or just around us at the time. I lost touch with him well before 9-11 but would catch wind of him and others doing good things. Stay in the fight Scott. You and I share the identical aspects of PTSD that people outside of military aren’t very comfortable with. Even some docs aren’t. The first time I hesitantly opened up to a doc about my PTSD she raised her eyebrows and I’ve never brought it up again. I was square with killing in that environment. Seeing good friends die and treating (I was a Delta) friends and others I could not help is something I really hadn’t counted on effecting me so much. Langmack, Maholoc, Lane, so many others. Glad to hear Tom’s alive and you’re moving forward.

Scot's resilience and determination is the reason he is still alive and functioning. it is impossible for most people to understand that level of trauma exposure over a such an extended time period. #inawe.

The two thoughts Mr Spooner's interview spark are: 1. I'm grateful these special ops guys are willing to serve, because this is much more than most Americans are willing to sacrifice. 2. I'm safe and comfortable in my bed every night because so many Americans around the world are protecting us. I'm grateful for them all, from the guy on laundry duty to the special operators on a covert sniper mission.

Be prepared to walk continuous 15 minute miles on uneven terrain with a 50 lb rucksack on your back- preferably heavier, preferably faster. Have a great understanding of map reading, use of a compass, and land navigation day and night. Be prepared to do all of this day in and day out, with minimum sleep. If you have a fear of heights, get over it. If you can't swim, learn how. Eliminate the idea of ever quitting anything from your mind, body, and soul. Make completion of this training the most important thing in the universe to you- even more important than your health, life, and family. If you do all of these things, you MIGHT make it through selection and be identified as someone who has the POTENTIAL for the Regiment to invest more resources in to train you into a SF Soldier. If any of this is a problem for you, find something else. Its not for everyone. You may want to check out the youtube channel "life is a special operation". I am sure there are also DOD approved sources of current info online as well. Recruiters don't know shit, except how to get you into one of the dozens of jobs in the army. Unless that person wears the SF tab, they don't know shit about SF- any more than I can tell you about the process to become a fighter pilot. I have a question...Never been in a so called typical war or military...
I have experienced some major trauma thru my life murders I've witnessed and other violence along with living in Prison...I listen to alot of actuall military combat stories etc...Do you think what I experienced is similar??? And do you think I have similar experiences to combat soldiers??? Do you think I have similar feelings, similar thoughts and mindset as military combat experience's??? I feel o do, and I honestly think and feel I'm extremely injured mentally and can only relate to people that also have experienced similar experiences....like combat soldiers say alot they can't relate to others that have not been in those situations...I actually miss my buddies in prison...I don't relate to the real world very well....I was only in prison for a year... I am not sure how to deal with my feelings now.... I used to be so kind and loving as a youth and young man...even though I experienced extreme trauma....I actually kinda hate the person I have become...I want to be a better person but have no idea how to be similar to the person I was....Please respond the best you can, I would truly appreciate it....psd is 💯 real.....I don't want to reach out to my fellow prison friends all my family are dead etc.....Please answer me....Thank you!!!!

Great question! In Scot’s words, “I walked away from a military retirement with 17 years in the Army, and a month away from pinning on the rank of Sergeant major at 34 years old. I did this because I knew I had to leave. It was no longer a choice. I hated being where I was. It wasn’t combat that bothered me as life in combat was easier than life back at home. I am not talking about just ‘at home’ from a personal perspective, but also ‘at home’ in the Army.”
