I served with George in 1st Group, a great guy and very humble. We went to scuba school together. George is one smart dude and just a great operator. Good to see you George.
My Father was in the Delta Force. He was also a Green Beret. Stephen A. Carpenter visited my Father and interviewed him for his book ' Boots on the Ground'. My Dad didn't speak about the war to me or my siblings. My Dad was a highly decorated officer in the US Army.
Mr. Hand and Myself shared a lot of the same air. Definitely cool. The Balkans might not have been Iraq/Afghanistan crazy, but it was basically the only game in the town at the time. In a lot of ways, Bosnia/Sarajevo was the Wild West ......... Long hair, sterile/no uniforms, "concealed" weapons, civilian vehicles. GOOD times.
Army logic. Hey this new guy right out of the Q course speaks frickin Chinese! I guess we'll send him to 1st Group, you know, the group that covers Asia. OR, how about this, we send him to 7th Group and see if he can learn Spanish!
Other special forces groups deploy to other regions too. So it’s beneficial for people in any group to know Farsi, Arabic, or other languages in case there’s cross over.
Great Show guys.. George Hand.. very interesting to hear your story. Larry is a great dude, and Mac is awesome as well! Have trained with both of the several time in N.C.
Really cool interview my step-dad was involved in at least one of those war criminal pick ups. Doesn’t talk about it a lot but glad there are folks around talking about the stuff they did especially in Bosnia.
Thank you George some great stories being ex SF we here in the UK are restricted under what we call a D notice, another is writing books you don't get invites to SF reunions. I have a friend who was in Vietnam but he was badged with the Australian SAS so any come backs went that way
Watching this again and the conversation about women reminds me of a PAC clerk we had once in my unit (MP). Girlfriend was an E-7 and had been stationed with an SF group at Ft. Bragg before she came to us.. But she wouldn't hesitate to tell everybody in earshot about "When I was in SF." Um... hate to break it to you there big sarge, but you worked in the office there just like you do here lol.
I get war feelings from the mention of Alabama NBC training. I was a split option and did my Basic in McClellan where the compound was. By the time I got to AIT the NBC school moved to MO and McClellan was getting decommissioned. Going through that compound was a cool experience in retrospective
I know you posted this comment over two years ago, but was this in or close to the Anniston Army Depot? Didn’t the army use that base for CBRN training?
I have spent many an hour and day at Yakima in Mopp 4 the most miserble days of my life! Humping the hills at YFC is not pleasant in the best of conditions!
So before BRAC in 1995 Fort McCellan was the home of the Army Chemical Warfare School. They had a special chemical warfare lab out in the back 40. There they could train with live agent in small quantities. It was all very controlled. It was convenient since Anniston Army Depot was just a few miles away and housed large stocks of GB, VX, and HD. After is was closed in 95 the facility was taken over by the CDP. Center for Domestic Preparedness. They operate the Chem Lab, and provide training for various disciplines tailored to LE, EMS, Fire, and Medical professionals. I’ve been there twice. And through the Chem Lab both times. They bring in GB and VX so you can use different types of test equipment to confirm the presence of it. Pretty interesting training. We did one exercise in full gear where the temps were only in the mid 80’s. When I pulled off my Tyvek coveralls and all my sweat poured out on the floor there was a puddle about 5 feet around. The only thing that allowed us to last as long as we did was the combination of being on air, not sucking a filter, and getting hosed down as we were dragging dummies through an emergency Decon station on the way to technical decon. We found out that when it comes to rehab after coming out of suits you could give an operator an IV to try and rehydrate them. But you can only give so much before you can put a person into shock by watering their blood down.
@DEAN DANIELSON you have to make regular army first. Then some sort of special operations, rangers, green berets soar. Then if and when you make that you may get the opportunity to try out for sofd-d. But until then stay healthy stay in shape and stay out of trouble. Most unit guys are in their mid 30's
That would all depend on the individual and their skill level between a Delta guy and a Spetznaz guy. Both generally kill the enemy with weapons not with martial arts.
George much respect and thanks for everything your volunteered and continued care for many vets, I consider myself an Albuquerquian even though I no longer live there! I wonder if you know Butch Anderson?
I was 0311 in lar platoon attached the 2/2 weapons company on the uss baatan on the 22nd meu. We were off the coast of liyba prepared for a amphibious assault landing on the beach . The plan changed because of the intel reports of sea mines along 900 miles of the beach coastline . So the assault from the sea was canned. The new plan was to sail to Italy to load our the lavs and cat platoons humvees on c17s. We were aware of the subterranean complex with possible chemical weapons threat . 2/2 fox company was going to secure the airport for the c17s to land . Lar platoon and cat were to push towards entrance of the subterranean complex. Naturally the op got called off entirely from higher .We continued to sail around the mediterranean for the 11months .
Thanks for the intel on Robbie Horrigan. It was June 17, 2005 Robbie ejected. He was high speed low drag. BTW John Horrigan is the knife builder and can be found on line. He still builds knifes in between trying to fill his freezer with wild game. Gods speed Robbie...stay golden.
Frkn grt interview!!! VERY indepth if you really listen there is a TON of info here I love it Delta was my dream job (never got a chance to go aside from recruitment seminar) so I live through these lol I wonder how the Pentagon feels about these.... Great interview. I always felt that I'm not living the dream until I've sweated buckets inside my mopp suit (as a way to mentally counter balance the level 10 suck meter).
Mine is painting, sewing art writing poetry and I love research I did a woodwork course in London I would like to work with electrics material to make sculptures 😀
MOPP in Desert Storm completely sucked!!!!! Many times training, with weapons and even trying to hook that stupid canteen up sucked, that black charcoal crap was a pain to get off. Better hope your lens don’t fog up either or you’re just a walking dead man. Good times! Agree, I’m still shocked none of us died from heat stroke.
They told me we used live Sarin and VX too but now in hindsight I'm not so sure it was. I mean they could have just told us it was and we'd all take it seriously. But we did the whole decontamination line too.
Interesting about the females. I know the South Koreans had female operators in the 80s (707th SMB) when I was there. All HALO/Static, SCUBA qualified. And of course Tang Soo Do.
Mr. Hand if you like I don't know if you read the History of Brigadier General Edward Hand in Pittsburgh PA. He was from county Offaly Ireland.who fought with the British against the French at Fort Pitt.maybe you might be interested! Thanks for the Video Guys.
There was a dude I only knew as Tony, all of 6’6” and somewhere in the range of 375 that would have rocked that Bigfoot outfit with ease. I would believe Bosnia would have been before his time in delta however.
Just for listening I think there's a big difference in age groups between the 3 of you. And how would you compare that today for what's going on. And what's going on is not very pleasant, Thank you for your service And Sacrifices God-bless America
Colombia I have watched documentries on drugs and police and arm foces interesting. Interesting of all of you talking tech, knowing about tunnelling mining, electrical boards, using breathing like oxygen tanks etc 😀 😄
The answer is no. While all SF gets language training, they’re still human so most barely remember any of their languages aside from English and Spanish.

Jesus,...imagine just chilling with George at a picnic or something. Just one of those guys you just shut up and listen intently to. Great guest guys!
I enjoyed this interview very much. George Hand is very well spoken. The stories are chock full of interesting facts and high adventure.
George Hand must have, incredible work ethic, learning all those languages, plus being a CAG soldier, someone to look up too!
He mentioned TFO in Bosnia being slack, by that does he mean intelligence support activity?
@Vedant Mehra he's talking about task force orange, so yes. He has a article on sofrep about it.
@Colton Zavitz hey thanks for replying, I will look this article up for sure, could you pls help with with the link or name of this article?

Way late to this, but it was so good to hear from Mr. Hand. I miss getting to converse with him on the old SOFREP. Glad to see he's doing OK.
Real American hero, thanks for sharing Mr. Hand
Saw Mr Hand on the University of Badassery Podcast. Cool guy. Cool to see him and Pat Mac interact
Thank you Mr. Hand. It's an honor.
Absolutly love it! George seems like an awesome dude. Really cool episode. Greetings from sweden

Definantly true
Recently read the autobiography of the founder of delta, his experience with british SAS was really interesting.

Incredibly interesting and informative.
Thank you George.
Great Interview! MOPP Level 4 Iraq 03' Sucked!! George is #1 Old School GI JOE!
MOPP 4 was cleared fast all the time because no WMD . M8 Alarms would give false positives because of where my unit was for a while.
Awesome interview!
Cheers, brother Robert.
Just found your channel
Absolutely love it
Awesome shit guys!
George Hand is an amazing human being. The kind of person the Australian SASR would like to work with.
