    hey william, last video when you guys got the bus you mentioned how there was alot of "exhaust" coming from the bus.
    the color of the exhaust was blue, which means that the engine is burning diesel and oil (probably why they wanted to sell it). but this shouldn't really be a problem, by the sound of it that should be a Ford 7.3L power stroke, and it isnt uncommon to see that with those engines.
    the most common cause of this problem is worn/bad piston rings. to fix it you would need to rebuild the entire engine. however, be sure to check the oil level often

    • @bigchooch4434
      @bigchooch4434 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why would you need to rebuild the whole engine? Do worn piston rings imply that the cylinder bores would need refinishing?

    • @aidanbotham442
      @aidanbotham442 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@bigchooch4434 You might be able to get away with new rings but more often than not the cylinder bores have kind of machined themselves to the rings and they'll chew up any new ones. And at that point why not reseal it all and get rid of any other problems you might have

    • @KaiserBruh
      @KaiserBruh 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@aidanbotham442 exactly. tearing the entire engine apart completely is the biggest hastle, and to not send it to get machined is doing yourself a massive disservice.
      in my experience as a mechanic, the cylinder walls are usually the ones to cause this due to cavitation and poor air quality (which makes them rough and in turn ruins effectiveness of the piston rings to keep oil out if the combustion chamber)
      especially a school bus that is running everyday for hours in city traffic, they usually get beat up pretty bad internally (always running and schools not having the budget for proper/consistent services such as changing oil, lube and fuel filters, and air filters (which lets sand and dust into the combustion chambers and causes what i previously mentioned)
      so getting it machined, maybe bored out a couple thou with better pistons seems appropriate. but this is a school bus they bought as a gag, so just refilling the engine with oil as needed should work for them lol

    I work at a place that specializes in manufacturing hydraulic cylinders for heavy duty mining equipment.
    There are a few options we use to keep the piston from backing off depending on the application and size of the cylinder, but none of them involve torquing to 1000+ ft lbs.
    Also the cap on the end is called a gland and if you use a longer pin wrench with an actual handle and secure the cylinder in a press or vise, it's way easier to tighten.

They had gotten the entire engine back together and were about to put it back in the car when someone noticed. They were on a strict time crunch as they were rebuilding it in the pits. Needless to say I learned two very important lessons that day, always double check your work. And it is very funny to stick random nuts and bolts in other peoples work stations.

    sent my package out to you today William:) im stoked to possibly see it in the next video where you unbox some packages from your viewers. im suprised you needed our help. its super funny because i actually cant easily make the file you had had us build it on. so props to you for being great at machining or whatever you called it with whatever software you mentioned. i used tinkercad to make what i sent you.
    P.S. can we maybe get some 20 minute videos? Please. i miss them.

    Actually drew the freebody diagram and changed my mind, comment below wasnt entirety correct. --Torque doesn't lever multiply like this, only force does. Draw the Freebody diagram of the setup you have. 250 in, 250 out. You still only applied 250ftlbs in this setup--

    • @jsax01001010
      @jsax01001010 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You are kind of right but kind of wrong. Torque does multiple with leverage (after all, look at the units; torque is literally a force multiplied by the distance from which it acts), but it doesn't multiple the way William stated in the video. Let's say his torque wrench is 2ft long. When the torque wrench indicates 200ft•lbs, it means he applied 100lbs of force at the end of the 2ft wrench. (2*100=200) Now when he adds the 5ft breaker bar, it only adds to the distance that the force is acting on, but the force is still multiplied by the total distance, so the 2ft wrench plus the 5ft bar would be a total distance of 7ft, and with a force of 100lbs, that would make the torque at the nut 700ft•lbs. To make 1000ft•lbs of torque at the nut, William would have to apply 143lbs to the end of the wrench, which would mean setting the torque wrench to 286ft•lbs.

      @hadesbearer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@jsax01001010 yeah, you are right and I was wrong. Ended up drawing the free body diagram last night and talking to some friends. It's a good assumption trap this one.

    • @jsax01001010
      @jsax01001010 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@hadesbearer You were still right to say that he didn't make 1000ft•lbs at the nut, something that I didn't see any other commenter point out. Torque wrenches in general are a pretty good assumption trap. Most torque wrenches aren't directly measuring torque; they are generally measuring some property related to how force is applied to the handle which is used to infer the torque at the fastener. If you change anything related to how force is applied to the handle or how it's transferred from the wrench to the fastener, it can significantly alter the applied torque versus the torque indicated by the wrench. A common mistake when using torque wrenches is choking up on the handle or pulling with a second hand further up on the wrench. This will overtorque the fastener beyond the torque set at the wrench.

      @@jsax01001010ouh nice comment. At least he was safe to not over-fasten it I guess.
      Another common mistake is to use some sort of extension because it’s easier to apply the torque on the big boys.

    wait, you have a printer and just need the files right? Make sure you print it in flexible material, so much better on the hands. I made wheelbarrow handles recently and nylon and ASA was horrible with extended use, TPU is the way to go. Preferably softer than the standard 95a. Or you could use 1mm walls and 20% infill so it still has some give to it if you don't have really flexi TPU.
