    This video is definitely showing its age! Some of the historical info isn't 100% reliable, and the Magic Kingdom queue games and exit scenes are no longer there as far as I'm aware.
    I'm considering redoing this video sooner or later, as I've changed quite a bit about how I approach these, but (spoiler alert!) I still stand by my final verdict! Though all you Magic Kingdom lovers are still valid and I respect your preference!

    The Space Mountain windows in Anaheim used to let you see into the ride. But in 1998, they boarded them up with those painted on stars to make the attraction darker than it was when light from the queue poured in.

    I am a huge fan of the Space Mountain at Disneyland. The smooth track, comfortable seats, and of course, the amazing soundtrack all contribute to this. I visited Disney World a few years ago, and the ride was kind of a letdown (bumpy ride, cramped ride vehicle, and no soundtrack). Then again, I grew up going to Space Mountain in Disneyland every weekend. Great analysis and video comparing the two! 😊

    To be fair, Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain boarding area *used* to be open so you could look up and see the ride vehicles zooming around in the dark (they had glow-in-the-dark panels on their sides back then, too). While this was less aesthetically interesting than what it has now, it was really neat to see the ride in action before you board it.

      Disneylander They did something similar at Disneyland. However, instead of looking up to an open ceiling, you looked through windows to your left. I couldn't find any pictures or videos of it, but the current queue at Tokyo Disneyland's SM is the same as Disneyland's from when these windows existed, so here's the link if you want to see what it was like: th-cam.com/video/WqmP4U3ituA/w-d-xo.html

    It's weird for me. Disneyland's is so much smoother, and the onboard soundtrack makes a huge difference. But I sorta like the Disney World layout a bit more, the drops and turns just seem a bit more thrilling.
    Though they both sorta pale in comparison to the new indoor roller coaster king, Cosmic Rewind haha.

  • @froakie1404
    @froakie1404 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Disneyland's is better in my opinion, there's more drops, thrills, a more beautiful score, and a faster speed and a greater sense of adventure.
    However Magic Kingdom's queue wins because of the interactive stuff you can do in it and it makes the queue much more fun to walk through.

    I used to be all for Disneyland's Space Mountain, but after riding the DW version, I have to admit that I prefer it. The drops and turns feel a lot more sharp and sudden, which makes it so much more fun for a ride in which you have no idea what will happen next. And as much as I love DL's soundtrack, not having one allows for some startling sound effects and hearing other coasters pass by right overhead, which adds to the excitement.

    Awesome video! Completely agree with almost everything, but I am a fan of the darker, more contained feel of Florida’s. It makes it seem more ominous, which I think contributes to the dark thrill ride. The ride itself, however, is obviously superior over in California.

    I think Disney knows that WDW’s space mountain isn’t the best, but they try to keep its original qualities because it’s the first version. WDW’s was Walt’s original idea, envisioned after the Matterhorn. So I’m assuming WDW is getting the Tron Attraction next to it instead because they don’t want to send space mountain into rehab and change too much of what Walt has envisioned. DL’s space mountain is far more superb and if they truly wanted the tron effect, they could easily add an overlay. I think WDW is getting tron, which would be much easier to overlay seasonally than Space Mountain. But notice how WDW’s space mountain went into refurbishment in 2009 but not much of it changed but the queue. I don’t see it upgrading anytime soon.

    Disney World's is better in my opinion. Disneylands space mountain is just all turns and like 3 drops where disney worlds theres so much more going on. I was just there in february and the ride isn't really that rough you can't even compare that to matterhorns roughness. If they ever upgraded our trains to have the audio on them I think disney worlds would be perfect but even without them they do a good job blasting the audio in the ride and it changing to wherever part the car is in.

    The problem is, you can’t compare these two rides fairly. Space Mountain was supposed to be Disney Worlds version of the Matterhorn. They both have two tracks, they’re both a bit rough, they both have the same style vehicles, etc.

    • @luuchoo93
      @luuchoo93 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but it worked better for Magic Kingdom. The small uncomfortable vehicles make the ride in Florida scarier, since most of your body is outside and you feel like “unprotected” turning in the dark. In Matterhorn those uncomfortable vehicles simply make no sense.

  • @waterloggedstair
    @waterloggedstair 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've never been to Disneyland, but I think that WDW's version is better because the bumpy aspect adds to the effect because it feels like the spaceship is going so fast its shaking. And you get to shout "hi" to people riding the Peoplemover because the Peoplemover goes through the spaceship segment. And also, you don't have to share the same row with somebody else. It's essentially single rider. When we go, our family usually fills up 2 entire trains. So i think that WDW's version is better.

      Ethan Foster well thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

    • @chicagocarless
      @chicagocarless 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ethan Foster I'll preface this by saying I absolutely love both versions of the ride. Each one is kind of a favorite for different reasons. That said, there's only one sudden drop on Disneyland's Space Mountain. Magic Kingdom's version has four. The real difference is that Disneyland's version only has one sudden rise to slow things down--and it's immediately made up for by the single sudden drop which follows it shortly thereafter--so the speed and sense of hurtling out of control are both much more pronounced. In comparison, Magic Kingdom's version has two sudden rises near the top of the ride and an upward helix near the bottom, along with much stiffer trim brakes, all of which slow things down considerably. As a result, the Orlando version of the ride never really gets to build momentum--instead momentum is moderated so significantly that the fastest point of the ride is not at the very end. Meanwhile, trains on the Anaheim version essentially scream all the way to the bottom of the mountain, with the very ending of the ride being the fastest moment of all. That makes a big difference in ride feel. You never feel like you have to get out and push on the Anaheim version. But the Orlando version definitely gets a little pokey near the bottom of the mountain.

      Ethan Foster Thanks. It's like this for me. I used to be a DL vet and dislike the Orlando version. Then later I became a WDW vet and finally got to ride the Orlando version a lot. So now when I'm in Anaheim, I love the ride experience, but the pre- and post-show are meh. And when I'm in Orlando, I love the pre- and post-show...and somehow I still love the ride experience because it's so very Matterhorn (but less painful!) I think that's the secret to loving the Orlando version for DL vets, like an old friend in disguise!

    What's with the Imagination Institute sign over at 1:28?
    Also- East Coaster here. I've driven out to CA twice. First time Space Mountain was closed, second time it was on the Star Wars overlay. I didn't notice significant drops in CA, but maybe I wasn't paying attention. WDW has 4 "dips"; the last one really gets your attention and IMO makes the ride a bit more interesting. One of the operational travesties at WDW is that they often open up the "zigzag" line too early in the game, so you often walk right past the star tunnel and games just to spend twenty minutes in the dark. One more thing...sure, WDW is a little rough, but I came off the Matterhorn with straight-up bruising.
    I scarfed up the $$$ to fly to Paris once. Got pretty sick with a cold on Disneyland day, so all I remember about Space Mountain was (1) yet another Star Wars overlay and (2) a bad headache.

    Having rode both, Disneyland is by far the superior experience. However, Disney World's version is the one I grew up on, and I just remember going in that building for the first time at 10 years old and just having my mind blown at the theming. Yeah, the actual experience is little more than some pinhole lights and it certainly hasn't aged well, but I just get a huge rush of nostalgia that I can't help but love it.
    That said, it's basically undisputed that the best overall version of the ride is the one at Disneyland Paris, but I digress.

Like, sure, just go ahead and omit the best part of the Anaheim version. I actively avoid going to Disneyland Anaheim if they've swapped out the original soundtrack for Hyper Space Mountain. Not having a soundtrack at all makes me even question the point.

    Live here in Los Angeles, so all of my visits are to Disneyland but we take trips to Orlando every once and a while. I know Disneyland and California Adventure Up and Down, Left to Right, so it's such a cool experience having to enter the Magic Kingdom and expect to Star Tours in Tomorrowland and Indiana Jones in Adventure Land. Such a completely different experience with some similarities. But one thing I have observed that may be just my point of view is that DisneyWorld may have Quantity, Disneyland Resort has quality and I'm comparing what they both share in rides and experiences. Our Space Mountain is 10x times better. Our Pirates of the Carrabian has a way better experience. Our Haunted Mansion's layout is more appealing, however, Orlando's has a segment which Disneyland lacks. Overall, Both parks are amazing and have something to offer that the other doesn't but in what they do share Disneyland wins in that.

      Disney World has also quality if you consider almost all (if not all) of the queues are longer, better themed, more immersive than the ones at Disneyland.
      Also, it depends on the particular ride. Pirates is clearly superior in Disneyland. Tower of Terror is clearly superior in Disney World. Rides like Haunted Mansion or Space Mountain can be debatable. So...

      @@luuchoo93 I live in Orlando and have beem going to Magic Kingdom since the 80s. I agree the queue in Disneyworld Space Mountain and exit are better but the quality of Anaheim Space Mountain is superior. I went to Anaheim Disney in 2005 for reopening of their Space Mountain. Overall i felt the rides at Anaheim Disney are better quality. More details, effects. I mean Hollywood is around the corner. Plus maybe this balances out for Anaheim park being smaller. Disneyland's Pirates, Big Thunder, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones, and Space Mountain (seemed like real Space Station in there..plus on board speakers) just seemed to me to be better quality. Now i did just get to sample the new TRON coaster at Disneyworld..It was awesome and is more high tech, has better quality effects and is faster then Space Mountain.

    I love Disney World’s version. Yes, Disneyland as more stuff but Disney World is a remake of Disneyland so it’s not gonna be exactly the same. You can hold bags down there bc I held two Disney bags stuffed with merch at my feet. Plus it’s shaky bc going to space is not smooth. You wanna feel like you’re actually going to space.

    The Space Stage is still there. You walk up and then down the stairs for the Magic Eye Theater, which filled in the space that had the seating. The empty plaza above is that way because the theater roof can't support the weight. The empty wall behind the Fastpass machines was once the order windows to The Space Place, which had seating on both floors. The lot panels with the space graphics once held the menu boards.

    This video leaves out the history and musical score of the ride as well. The music score as you walk into the original is soo classic and makes it feel soo original. Also loved the disney World version before the 2009 update when the rockets would glow in the dark and the load area had the open ceiling. Standing in the load area and looking up into space watching the glowing rockets go by was far more impressive than disneylands load area

    I personally prefer Disney World’s. I visited in august this year and disneyland in christmas of 2019. And when I rode the DW version, I was blown away. I think the fact that it is rough adds to the experience because it feels like you are traveling through space. However what makes DW’s version much better is the airtime you can get. I do think the lack of an on board audio makes it closer.

    Remember that the soundtrack on Space Mountain (and the in-seat speakers) at Disneyland is a relatively new addition, which probably explains why Florida doesn't have it (they were both originally built without it). They didn't have the soundtrack when I started going there in the late 1990s. It was part of a refurbishment of Tomorrowland to make it more timeless by adding a Jules Verne/Steampunk theme. I do like the current soundtrack, but the original then was great too. With regard to the dual tracks, this makes sense if you're using the Matterhorn bobsleds as a model for the ride.

  • @richardgroves8565

    The ride itself is better at Disneyland, but the queue was way cooler when you could look down on the Space Stage in the days before the Magic Eye Theater was built. The queue at WDW has great ambient music which the DL version lacks.

I don’t really like people comparing them. It’s not Disney World’s fault it’s “not as great as Disneyland”.

    Honestly,on the seats,Disney World is better. Why?
    1.They are comfortable
    2.They are single rider
    3.You don’t have to worry about that annoying friend that holds on to you the entire time
    4 (the best perk).YOU HAVE YOUR OWN LAPBAR,you don’t have to worry about your friend being so skinny to the point it’s to your waist.
    You can pull it really tight to be safe,or live on the edge and not pull it tight,which gives you the illusion that your in an actual rocket.
    Okay so on the ride,Disney World should get a point. Since it’s rough it gives the illusion that your in the galaxies.

    I remember my 13th birthday and this ride at Disneyland. My cousin and I would go to the upper level of the Starcade next door, and then go across the roof to the building entrance, thus skipping the line entirely (the roof went across to where the line would go up the escalator). I think we rode this 15+ times in about a 1.5-2 hour time span. The crew inside got to know us and set us aside so we got to ride in the front of the car each time...

    I like the ride at Disneyland better - it is smoother and has better lighting. The WDW Space Mountain is nowhere as rough as the Matterhorn which is an awful ride. I prefer the ride configuration at WDW better. The bag storage isn't there but I like the front to back over side to side. As far as picking a favorite version I can't. I like the going up on the outside of DL's space mountain - but from your vid that has been gone sin 2015 or later. I like all the queuing and exit of WDW. I like the split and laid back boarding area of WDW but the ship and launch of DL. I would take the vehicles of WDW but the speakers and ride of DL. If you ever read these add comparing the attraction locations into the compare vids.
