@@towhomthismyconcern It depends on the state you live in and the country you come from because of quotas. I grew up in "a refugee camp" area in the states, i'm american but most of the people in the area were bosnian, croatian, burmese, or mexican. You see bosnians and croats getting there citizenship in a few years, and people from mexico or burma taking way longer. (immigrant status vs refugee status) Even some western countries, a friend of mines mom is dutch and she lived in the states for around 25 years before she got her citizenship. It's a numbers game, and it is honestly bullshit, especially when it comes to renewing visas.

I think there’s a difference between simplicity and ease; it’s simple enough in practice to follow a recipe and make a soufflé...but I still fucked it up everytime I tried. 🤣
On paper, the process is quite simple; in practice, it’s not at all an easy process to get through.

This song isn’t about immigrants here in America and it isn’t about handouts. Instead it’s about the effects of US imperialism and the effects of American corporations on people in other countries. The refugees the song is highlighting aren’t immigrants in American but in their respective countries. The lyrics literally say “don’t hold me up now” and “I don’t need your help now”. The refugees want the US and it’s corporate imperialism to leave their nations and leave them alone.

This is about the struggles that people go through everyday outside America, for some of us it's not easy. I come from an immigrant family, and even though I am a U.S. citizen, if my family didn't cross the border and would of waited for the legal citizen I would of been an orphan for the last 6-7 years. So it's not that we don't want to go through the legal process but is more like it is against us because for a Latinx person or any person of color to come is 100 times harder than for a white person to immigrate through the system. Even after being a citizen or resident the system is still against us just for our color, there have been cases where U.S. citizens have been deported just because of their skin color; an example is the bracero program where the U.S. wanted Mexican people to work during war and when it was over they kicked them out even though they promise they could stay there. The battle between Mexico and US took all Mexican land from the northwest and force the people currently living there out of their homes for being Mexican. So you tell me do you think is easy saying that we want to come legally when in our countries we risk our lives everyday just for going through it again and again and if we wait we might not even get the chance to apply, that is how I lost my dad, a week before receiving his visa he got killed by the gangs. So tell me was it worth it waiting when I know my baby brother and dad don't have a dad for the last 5 years just because he decided to wait for the legal system that until this day is harming more people than the one is helping

Gotta say, looking at the banners behind you, I don't know if Rise Against is for you. Punk is inherently political and Rise Against sing and stand against everything that banner behind you does. It is also worth noting that immigration is not easy. People spend years and a vast amount of money trying to immigrate legally. Not to say illegal immigration is the answer, but rather that saying it's "easy" lacks a degree of empathy. Finally the idea of "just work hard" is flawed when you take into account systemic discrimination that is rampant in this country. Sure you may made it from a tough upbringing but that doesn't mean everyone can. Again, that thought process lacks empathy. Do better.

"Tony Petrossian, the director of the music video, originally thought to write a video treatment about a refugee trying to enter the United States, but knew that the band was going to receive several treatments with the same idea. Instead, he decided to portray the plight of the refugee from a different angle. The band members unanimously agreed upon Petrossian's treatment. The video deals various themes, including consumerism, fair trade, and sweatshops, and attempts showcase how conventional business models allow for various human rights violations."
Rise Against is heavy on the social commentary in their songs. A good example of that is the song Make It Stop (September's Children)

I don't care who you are, where you come from, or how much money you have, everyone needs a helping hand at least once. Remember that a helping hand doesn't have to just be money. It can be someone watching your kids for an hour so you can go to that interview, letting your dog out so you can work those extra hours, or even holding open a door for you.

  • @Rkurnelm

Gibby, when it comes to Rise Against it is really more of a issue of "Which Album" rather than "Which song". My recommendation would be to pick an album. I'm a fan of either Wolves or Sufferer and the Witness (which is where Prayer Of The Refugee comes from) as starter albums (after you've heard the originals then move on to Ghost Note Symphonies). Individual songs are great samplers but the albums are where its at. Prayer of the Refugee is a good introduction, it wasn't mine, like you I first heard Prayer of the Refugee in a game (Guitar Hero III) my first Rise Against song was Heaven Knows.
Due to the prolific and long lived nature of Rise Against it is hard to pick individual songs because each album has some seriously hard hitting songs. Indeed my favorite song on Sufferer and the Witness isn't even Prayer of the Refugee but Drones. However if pressed for songs that I would insist on folks whetting their appetite with it would be:
    Drones
    Hero of War
    Satellite
    Wolves
    House on Fire
    Swing Life Away
    Heaven Knows
I chose these specifically as a primer, not because of their popularity. If you're looking for what's popular, well there's plenty of folks giving you options other than me. Seems everyone wants you to do September's Children (Make it Stop), Savior, or Re-education (Through Labor). Good songs and good messages, but frankly overplayed in my opinion (kind of glad you used Prayer of the Refugee as your first)
These would be a good primer to give an idea (although not a complete sampling) of the range they are capable of. Bearing in mind of course then you get to the Ghost Note Symphonies which are acoustic variants which are amazing in their own right.

Gibby, all is fine but don’t get too political... and that bs about #1 nation in the world - come on man, don’t feed your audience that shish... every nation considers themselves to be the best. Who the hell cares who’s the best, just be kind to each other... with all the madness going on in the world right now, the last thing we need is to say things like that. Other than that - nice reaction, fire song and an amazing band.

The song is more about how our capitalist society is destroying these third world countries and the wage gap I used to work for Nordstroms, the cost for making the clothes and the amount we were paid doesn't add up to how much we sold the products for which means someone is getting shortchanged. Imagine working twice as long but only get a few dollars or cents a day for it just so we don't have to pay as much or some some billionaire can have even more money.

  • @DougTurley

Hard to chose a bad song from them. I think I've already seen them suggested but I would say "Hero of War" and "Make it Stop (September's Children)" may be the most challenging to your (admittingly assumed) politics and beliefs. I think their official videos are pretty straight forward but in "Hero of War" especially, I would suggested paying close to the lyrics and the change in the 3rd verse. And keep in mind the song was written after they received variations of the same letter from veterans.
Got to see them years ago when they headlined with Bad Religion playing before them. Greg Gaffin made sure to thank them for taking them out on tour in a way helping them out the same way they helped Rise Against. They had also tried to get a spot with another band that they opened years ago. I don't remember exactly how they worded it, but they seemed more interested in their Broadway show than talking to a band that helped them when they were coming up.

Bro I love the song and your reaction however I disagree when you say that America or "The United States" is the best country. Honestly with all this situation that is going on right now in the USA , I think the situation can be managed in a better way, but people are not putting their effort, as everything there is a lot of racism throughout the world but sometimes the USA goes to different levels , I like your videos dude , but I do not agree with your opinion! hope you do well! good vibes!

Which country is better? I'm curious. Because I've traveled the world, and if you ever saw how people lived in other parts of the world you'd stop pretending your little entitled life in America is so tough. We are the best country in the world, bar none. No offense, but you look like you're about 12, please attain some life experience before shitting on the fabric of the country you're so privileged to live in.

WE TH3 PEOPLE ok bro, look! I’m not 12 hahaha , I’m from Costa Rica, Have you ever been here? There no better or worse countries. We all go thru some shit. But there are people who indeed think that they are better than others just because they’re from the United States (this is the correct name for your country) America is actually the whole continent , I can say I’m American since Costa Rica is located in the same continent. I don’t sincerely agree that the USA is the best country , you know there’s lots of racists , lots of murders , I ain’t agree with that. People die every minute in different countries , tell me one single country that doesn’t face murders! , yeah exactly None. So there’s no BEST COUNTRY. Please you’re more than welcome to come to Costa Rica and check it out.

Rise Against is all positive message. Love me some Rise Against, 1 of very few select bands I have yet to see LIVE! Thrice reaction when you have time, another band you will enjoy and criminally underrated! I know you are ranting and are positively doing so. I'd disagree...you are clearly financially stable I would say you owe infants/children medically challenged and fragile a donation to their hospitals. I wish I could be a heart surgeon...its far too late and I wasn't blessed with such gifts. 💯🇺🇸

  • @davidswanborough1769
    @davidswanborough1769 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

the rants really are ironic when looking at the stuff that rise against does. the sentence "I dont owe nobody nothing" is nonsense. we all owe other people a great debt. People we never met don't even know exist we owe each other a debt because without each other this world would be even more chaotic and unjust. America isnt the greatest country either I grew up aspiring as a kid to be american thanks to movies and cartoons and as I aged I realised that any country that states its the best never will be. To be the best country you have to make other countries betters and set an example without EGO and America doesn't do any of that. should listen to Anti Flag album 2020 Vision (Song Hate Conquers all) sums up the problems with america perfectly and the rest of the world to be honest I dont hate america dont hate any country to hate a country is to hate diversity

Bro, you should know that coming to the border, to ask for asylum, is the right legal way to ask for it recognized by internation laws. An asylum seeker is someone who can't go through a regular economic immigrations process, such a green card, but his request isn't less legal thought. And remember the words engraved at the feet of the statue of Liberty, by Emma Lazarus : Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, the tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! If those words aren't what the America means anymore, maybe the statue of liberty should be returned to France.

It's always awesome to come across a song that you don't recognize at first, then as soon as the chorus kicks in you're like, "HOLY SHIT IT'S T H I S SONG?"
Happened to me with Before I Forget, I played it on Guitar Hero a lot, I randomly come across it at a time I really hated SlipKnot, gave it a chance and as soon as that chorus kicked in, I threw my hands up in the air in pure confusion, I'm like "H U H?"
Needless to say, I got a SlipKnot tattoo and they're my favorite band, so my opinion of them has definitely changed.
