- I have missed out on a LOT of early 2000's music, including Rise Against. In a TH-cam Community poll a couple weeks ago, I asked all of you where to start on this journey and you led me here to "Prayer Of The Refugee". Not only am I impressed by its messaging and musicality (not to mention the stickiness), but now I want even more Rise Against!

And out of all the RA songs I've listened to, they have so much depth to their lyrics. I've never seen an interview with Tim or the band, but I've listened to their songs so much over the years, they feel like a part of me now. It would be amazing to see these two chat! More than almost any band I listen to, I can always turn on a random RA song and get something meaningful from it, and that extra kick to fight through another day.
This would be amazing.
If you're going to delve into Rise Against, may I recommend:
"Swing Life Away"
"Give It All"
"Audience Of One"
"Hero Of War"
"Nowhere Generation"
Also, the band's cover of "Any Way You Want It" on Revolutions Per Minute is great and really sets a good contrast against the original version by Journey.

Swing Life Away is a great song.

I'd add "The Numbers" to that list as well, it's definitely the song that catches my attention the most when it comes to vocal delivery.
They are the epitome of modern punk. All of their songs have a reason, a purpose. They are subversive and their message boils down to human decency. They are amazing.

They're easily one of the best bands to come out of the 1990s/2000s pop-punk/emo trend, and have translated better than most of the others with time. There's a reason why they're one of the higher-billed acts at the 2023 When We Were Young Festival.
If we're doing fantastic singers of modern punk early to mid 2000:s AFI is really a must. Davey was almost in a class of his own. The 2006 live version of Totalimmortal is fantastic.
Agreed, my dad introduced me to Rise Against when I was a kid because he loved their music and messages in them so he wanted me to experience that too, I'm 16 now and I've never stopped listening.
@@Badboyrune2k YES. Tbh she could have a 2 for 1 with Clove Smoke Catharsis (though not as punk). I'd live to see her react to a lot of Sing the Sorrow and some of the later stuff too, like Break Angels
Hero of War to this day makes me cry. The shift in tone from the beginning to end of the song is overwhelming. Life Less Frightening is another that is a warming to us all.
Hero of War and Swing Life Away are my two favorites of their songs and I hope she covers them eventually, especially the former
They have very few songs that are not hyperpolitical and critical of the world.
saw them alive last year in Portugal, and i cried a lot in Hero of war, i've got two uncles that are former military and my gf is ukranian and things were heavy..

For your next Rise Against adventure, I would HIGHLY recommend 'Make It Stop (September's Children)' - not only are the vocals amazing again, but the message is one of their most powerful that everyone should listen/watch at least once in their life

It honestly feels like the whole Sufferer&Witness album is a classic, I will never stop listening to every song in it.

If anyone else has similar feelings about it, I think Elizabeth would love their song "Satellite". Listened to it hundreds of times, and it makes me emotional every single time. From "We are the orphans of the American Dream" to "It's not too late, we have the rest of our lives", this song has been like an anthem to me.

Yeah i _love_ Rise Against - i had tickets to go see them in 2006 on the Sufferer And The Witness tour but i was ill so had to give them away...was absolutely gutted.
Somehow i've managed to miss them every tour until January this year when the planets aligned and I _finally_ got to see them.
I still would've loved to have seen them earlier though with more RPM and Counter Culture songs in their setlist.

Wish I could say the same. Love the sound when it comes to their albums, but the few times I've seen them live, they weren't very good at all.
They are amazing live. I am lucky enough to live in Chicago so I have gotten to see them quite a few times over the years. The greatest tour was the Appeal to Reason tour, the Chicago date had Rise Against, Thrice, Alkaline Trio, and The Gaslight Anthem. I have yet to top that show@@scottp4357
Punk as a whole is criminally underrated in an era where we need it more than ever
The entire album "the sufferer and the witness" is an amazing story. Highly recommend listening to it.

savior, satellite, behind closed doors, hero of war, swing life away, paper wings, whereabouts unknown, wait for me. long forgotten sons, survivors guilt I mean come on that's not even close to all of the best songs i cant think of anyone or any group with a more consistent catalogue.
I'm happy that Tim gets more recognised as a great vocalist. The Sufferer and the Witness era really demonstrated the power and the range of his voice. I would suggest Ready to Fall for the next analysis bc this guy can rreally scream.

My only problem is that he sounds so much better on the studio recordings than he does live, his voice live leaves a lot to be desired
@@liamchapman6889 he destroyed his voice I think. I heard him live in small underground bar in 2009 and he sounded great. And then in 2011 in big hall in budapest, and he sounded terrible (he was sick and sound engineer was probably deaf because they sounded baaaaad) .

Tim McIlrath is more than just a punk rock songwriter, he's a storyteller giving a voice to those among us that don't have one or struggle to have theirs heard.
Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music as well. Drag My body being one of the best examples.
This band is so grossly underrated. Their songs are powerful, their music is impactful and their energy is relentless. They are unapologetically political but they speak on issues many atlrtists fear addressing. Definetly hope tovsee more analysis. Savior is their big one, Hero of War will have you weeping, and all of their songs will rock your soul.

Still one of my favourite Rise Against songs. Re-Education (Through Labor) is another favourite. A lot of my rotation when I was younger was Rise Against, Rage Against The Machine, and System Of A Down.
This, especially the uncensored version, though I'd totally understand if Elizabeth wouldn't make her reaction based on that version.
For sure, all those bands still (except for one) hold a special place in my heart today.
Rage has turned into Simp for the Machine the last decade so I don't feel the same for them but Rise Against & SOAD I listen to nearly daily.

The greatest thing about Rise Against IMO is their storytelling ability. There's something magnetic about their music, it just pulls you in, holds you there and makes you listen to what they have to say. Criminally underappreciated band and one we would do well to listen to.

Tim is one of the most talented vocalists in the scene. I cried harder to "Hero Of War" when i saw them live than I did when i was being born.

I was going to mention this song too. One of my favorites and a definite gut-punch.
Tim is legitimately one of the best punk singers in the scene today, IMO, and the fact that he has kept his voice going strong for over 20 years now is a testament to just how good he is. Fantastic band, and a pretty solid starting point. I recommend following up with either "Savior" if you want the same style of song from him, or "Hero of War" for a softer song that will hit you HARD in the feels. "The Numbers" is also a very solid song if you want to hear how the band sounds now.
Hero of War is absolutely my favorite song from them. The emotions it brings are raw

Rise Against holds a special place in my heart. The Good Left Undone, Swing Life Away, Dancing for Rain, Savior, and a million other songs are worth checking out.
They hold a special place for me as well. Swing life away makes me cry for personal reasons. The amount of great songs is unbelievable, my favorite band of all time.

Help is on the way is a criminally under-rated song from them, the lyrics are haunting and the vocal quality is top notch, even more so than Savior or Prayer of the Refugee
Another one is But Tonight We Dance. Absolutely incredible.
I have been listening to Rise Against for almost a couple of decades now, and if you ever wish to revisit them, these are the songs I would suggest. In a loose order of recommendation:
- Hero of War. One of the choices you put in the poll. It is a great acoustic song to analyze the vocals and also pretty emotional.
- Savior. It is one of their most popular songs. Both original and Ghost Note Symphonies (acoustic) versions are great.
- Make it Stop (September's Children). Is a song about accepting yourself. The video is pretty powerful, heavy and emotional,
- Re-Education Through Labor. Has some vocal changes a few times throughout the song, althought it doesn't show much of him singing like the other three above.
- People Live Here. Great song with video and lyrics being emotional and deep, but it doesn't show Tim singing.
Hero of War is an absolutely devastating song

Hero of War is phenomenal. Prior military, in the medical field, some friends and I would play the song just to watch the mood in the room shift as the song progresses. Cruel, but telling.
Swing Life Away as well
You have to do the Good Left Undone next! One of my favorite lines is from that song. it's powerful.

That part is one of the best lyrics of any song out there

I don't think I've heard this song for over a decade. It's insane how just a few opening chords can take you back like this!! It's hitting hard. Iraq 2006, best of times, worst of times.

Tim McIlrath is one of the most genuinely talented punk rock singers there has ever been. Amazing live too. And incredible song writer. Hes just the whole package.
I feel like Rise Against doesn't get nearly enough attention. One of the very very few bands I can say has never made a bad or even mediocre song. And their lyrical messages are always poignant and powerful. On first listen they may sound like just another skate punk band, but they are so much more than that if you spend a little time with the music.
You really can’t go wrong with Rise Against. They have such a great catalogue: Give It All, Destination, Anywhere but Here, Swing Life Away, Chamber the Cartridge, Savior, Ready to Fall, Reeducation through Labour, Audience of One, Entertainment, Lanterns, Broken Mirrors, Hero of War, Help is on the Way, I Don’t Want to Be Here Anymore, Make It Stop, Bullshit, The Numbers, People Live Here. So much ear candy.

Tim's vocal warm up routine is something that many singers should study. His vocal abilities combined with his writing is compelling to say the least. A true poet, singer, and storyteller.
This album is one of my all time favorites. 100% NO SKIPS.
It might just be because it was the first song I heard from them but "Give it All" is still my favorite from Rise Against.
Not the album version, though. There was another version form another album (Rock against Bush, maybe?) That was more aggressive, I enjoyed the hell out of that.

This is a band that started off punk with their early albums. Their sound has stayed consistent yet its evolved over the years as well.
So many of their songs are emotionally powerful, politically important, environmentally aware, and even hopeful to people struggling.
Make it stop, savior, help is on the way, ready to fall, everchanging (accoustic), tragedy +time, and so many more are excellent songs.
I went to see Anti-Flag and AFI a few years back as supporting bands for the headlining band, Rise Against. I wasn't into them at all at the time and I left the show three or four songs into their set. Reeeeeallly wish I had known how much I was going to love them a year or two after that lol.
We need to protect this queen at all costs. She's such a gem!
Growing up with Rise Against and being able to go through their albums back to back, you really get to hear Tim's voice evolve
He truly has some of the most incredible control, one of the best harsh vocalists around in regards to how naturally he can just transition in and out of it and still sound so powerful and legible. He wasn't always that natural and it's just really cool to hear someone develop a skill like that.
I’ve been a devoted Rise Against fan and their message for so many years now. I’ve seen them in concert more than any other band/artist other than Loreena McKennit. So excited for this review!!! Tim is my hero.

I saw them with Linkin Park once. I had never heard of them and couldn't really make out most of their lyrics, but their passion was like a tidal wave.

I'm a huge fan too, I seen them a long time ago when they weren't even the main event. Can't remember the exact date but I'm guessing it was probably close to 15 years ago. They were opening for Silverstein in Edmonton Alberta Canada. It was a wicked concert but at the time I had no idea who they were hahah.
Rise Against helped me through a lot throughout my teen years, such an underrated band.
My favorite thing is how everyone in the comments are recommending their favorite Rise Against songs, and they're all different.

I like to think that this song isn't about refugees but rather a message to refugees. The tone of the song is inspiring, encouraging, and empathetic. It's a call to arms for the oppressed.

“Help is on the way” is one of my favorites from them. Love “Hero of war” too, but being an AFG vet, I listen to it sparingly

Behind Closed doors is one of my personal favs by Rise Against. Also met them on several occasions and they’re genuinely the sweetest guys.

Cannot recommend "Make It Stop (September's Children)" enough. Absolutely gorgeous and powerful song.
And one thing you said a couple times which really hits the nail on the head, but Tim has such a natural sound to his voice. Some singers have their "singing voice" then you hear them talk, and it's different, but Tim has such a natural flow to his voice which helps you relate to the message the band is trying to convey.
This is going to a bit of an off-beat recommendation, but "The Approaching Curve" is one of my favorite songs by rise against (and that's as a listener in the top 0.001% of listeners on spotify). Its a lot more spoken word, with a ton of emotion put into every syllable and I would love to hear you break down such a different take on rock music that you dont hear a lot of people even attempt.
One thats a bit more mainstream and has a lot of the same elements is "Hero of War" and I guarantee you will cry.

The Rise Against cover of “For Fiona” by No Use For a Name is probably something to look at. Then that will get you into the genius, phenomenal talent of the late Tony Sly. 🖤
Respect… but I have the feeling that Tony will remain one of the biggest hidden gems of a songwriter the world will never know (and I don’t even think that makes sense but it does? 😂) Anyway, thumbs up for bringing Tony into the conversation.
"The Sufferer & The Witness" as a whole is one of the best albums out there, regardless of genre. This is a classic, and as a bonus, it makes for an energetic roll right into "Drones. "
my first concert was rise against when they were touring for this album. that transition from prayer to drones was wild in the mosh pit

Tim, Zach, Joe, and Brandon are class acts! I got to meet them before a show here in Atlanta. All four took time to greet and talk to every fan they met. Just some of the nicest, most humble people in the industry!
Oh, this is gonna be gooooooood. Awesome voice and a very…..opinionated band. Been listening to them since 2001. Excitement intensifies.
As a very trained and aggressively mediocre singer.... Tim has been a vocal hero to me for years!!! Rise Against was on my "pre-mission playlist" when i was in Iraq and the stories they weave in their songs get me choked up still to this day. Thank you from a fellow d&d nerd for diving into these guys! They are a gut check to the max.

Rise Against is my absolute favourite band. Both audio and message. I heard this when it came out when I was 16 and it has helped shape my worldview. Definitely would recommend any and all of their music. The Good Left Undone is my favourite song of all time. The final verse gives me chills everytime

A reality check is a good way to describe a lot of their songs. To me one of their old songs "Ready to fall" hits the hardest when you combine the song and the visuals of the m/v.
That’s the first song that introduced me to them. When that music video appeared on an old channel called International Music Feed.

I don't know how you do it, but somehow, you consistently manage to make me fall head over heels in love with bands that I'm ALREADY head over heels in love with.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone discover rise against for the first time! If you ever decide to listen to another song I highly recommend “dancing for rain”!

Appeal to Reason is my favourite album, like, of all time. And The Dirt Whispered is a fucking great song. On that album I would say my favourties are The Dirt Whispered, Dancing for Rain and Kotov Syndrome.

I've discovered this band in the early days of the COVID- pandemic. Their music has kept me going through really hard times, to this day. You NEED to listed to Make It Stop (September's Children). Tim's voice is full of emotion and begging to get his point across. The lyrics are intensely heart felt.

My introduction to Rise Against was “Re-Education Through Labor”, followed by this song. Instant fan at that point. So excited to see you explore them more!
I was working a late shift at the corner store and this band was performing in Ottawa across the river. I go out for a smoke at about 10 pm and I hear this song coming from all the way over there. Still gave me chills.
On the album, this song instantly and seemlessly transitions into the next song, almost like the two are part of a greater song. That song is 'Drones', and it's the song that got me into Rise Against! Also as someone else mentioned, another super impactful song is 'Make It Stop (September's Children)', I would thoroughly recommend both! Love your content, keep being you
Funny enough, Drones is the same song that got me listening. It was on madden 2007 and during the summer I was like, huh I wonder what else this band has. Looked them up on TH-cam, found prayer of the refugee and have been a lifelong fan since.
Yeah, it felt wrong that the music stopped where it did in this analysis and didn’t continue into the next song 😂 Total album band.
The nostalgia I get from this song is unbelievable.. I haven't heard it in years and honestly forgot it existed. I'm happy to be reminded of this.
The sufferer and the witness album is one of my favorite albums of all time. This song convinced me to look into the band and get the album back when I was just a teenager, and I have probably listened to the album back to front nearing a hundred times. There's so much to everything, instrumentals, voice, in the general tone that makes this album feel very easy to immerse myself in. It truly is the album that got me to actually listen to music instead of just hearing it, and I'm so glad that you're delving into this song in this band!
Hands down the best punk band, Rise Against have always been true to the sound and not afraid to speak out for those who cant.
The album this song is on (The Sufferer and the Witness) and the album before it (Siren Song of the Counter Culture) were peak Rise Against in my opinion. So many bangers on those albums, I'd be hard pressed to recommend any one individual track. Just listen to both albums back to back, you won't regret it. If I had to choose, I'd recommend the following;
- Paper Wings
- Ready to Fall
- Give it All
- Injection
- Blood to Bleed
- The Good Left Undone
Tip the scales and dancing for rain are my personal favorites....

I had chosen to analyze this song for my final oral English exam in high school. The jury was very surprised a French teenager appreciated and understood such a heavy and difficult message. I even remember them getting emotional while reading the lyrics lol. It's very nice to watch an analysis of a band that I still love so much, thank you! :)
Give It All and Ready To Fall are the two must listen. These 2 songs had a lot of impact on me when I was growing up
Swing life away, Paper Wings and Like the Angel from the Troubadour live performance. You will be blown away, these guys are amazing.

"Like the Angel", is another really good song by these guys. I recently found the acoustic version. Soooooo good.
The best thing about watching you listen to these bands is watching you expand your genres and the look on your face when you fall in the with the voices and the music.
Recently subscribed to your channel and I can’t express how much fun it is as someone who grew up listening to these bands watch someone with your music background explore this rock/metal genre, as well as getting your professional analysis of what’s going on with the vocals. So for that I wanted to say thank you!! Okay anyways, I’m not sure if anyone has recommended this before, but if there’s anyone out there that agrees with me please help this comment get traction. We need a Dance Gavin Dance reaction series. I absolutely, unequivocally, promise you that these guys will blow your mind away. Technically in their current state they have 4 vocalists, a screamer, two clean vocalists, and sometimes a rapper. Personally my all time favorite band, and a bit of a hot take, but I think they are one of the most talented group of musicians who basically created their own genre, “swancore”. Songs I would recommend are as follows, but as any DGD fan knows any of their tracks is impressive in its own right:

You should check out AFI. Davey Havok has interesting vocals (and amazing screams) and his lyrics are poetic. Plus the vibe fits the aesthetic of your studio.
Suggestions are: The Leaving Song Pt II, Silver and Cold, Beautiful Thieves, and Girls Not Grey. Every album they do has an entirely different style and it would be cool to do an analysis of his voice over the last 30 years.
Also since you like System of a Down, two more suggestions are: ATWA and Cigaro. They both have very, very interesting vocals! Particularly ATWA has great harmonies, a growl/scream I’ve never heard before from SOAD, and of course, typical SOAD craziness.

AFI is hands down my favourite band. Only issue is, on the earlier albums, which are my favourites, Davey didn’t have great vocal technique. He eventually damaged his voice (STS era). Still 10000% worth listening to from a lyrical and musical standpoint, though!

Please, please, please, if you get a chance to see them live, do it!! I’ve seen them over a dozen times and they are always incredible. They sound amazing and his vocals are always on point.

From Heads Unworthy is a song that helped me through tough times when it was released, from rough family conditions it fueled me to stand my ground and believe in myself. Still my favorite Rise Against song to this day.

I'm soooo glad you've found Rise Against! I have to recommend the song that literally lifted me up more times than I can count. The lyrics for Tragedy + Time read like a poem by Kipling or Dylan Thomas and Tim Mcllrath delivers them with all of the sincerity that fans of Rise Against know and love. I live with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease and I desperately want this song to reach as many ears and hearts as possible. Their bigger hits will get more attention, but Tragedy + Time speaks to me and my fellow Parkies (that's our nickname for people with Parkinson's) as if it were written for us. If anyone reading this is ever looking for something to grab onto when the depression get's truly heavy, please give this song a try. Rise Against has two videos for it, one of them is an amazing lyric video that has helped change the outlook of maybe half a dozen or so Parkies who have reached out to me for help. I promise, it's NOT a sappy ballad either! One of my favorite songs of all time.
Rise Against songs are so related to America today . Tims vocals are top quality 💯🎶
They are almost prophetic, right? They were bringing attention to things the mainstream only saw in periphery at the time, but now are forefront issues.

YESSS! Their entire catalog is consistently as heavy hitting with aggressive political and social messages. And They’re absolutely a punk band. Blood to Bleed is one of my favorite. State of the Union is also great. The whole Siren Song of the Counter-Culture album is heavy hitting and gritty. Easily the most played album from front to back for me. Give it All is a crowd favorite. And Swing Life Away for a more ballad-y song. Yes. More Rise Against please.

I’m late in seeing this episode. This band is insanely talented, Tim’s voice is incredible. The sound of the song mixed with his voice and then the video… is a real punch to the gut. I haven’t watched that video in a long time and didn’t expect to cry watching like I did the first time.
That crystal-clear tone on those long final "up"s never fails to give me goosebumps. It sounds like sacred fire blazing into an inferno, a rallying call for the disenfranchised.
Hero of war is one of their deepest songs, and the vocals are amazing

I mean it's a really really great song, but I wouldn't say it's one of their deepest. The message is pretty clear, I would say in terms of depth and complexity "The Approaching Curve" is up there.
It is unfiltered and poignant. It's hard to listen to because it hurts, especially if you served or are close to those that have. His voice almost forces the listener to have empathy for the narrator. To be that guy. They make it human. Fantastic song but hard to listen to.
@mikewiseman1853 That's exactly why I hate that song. If he had experienced it, it would be different, at least to me, because I actually did. It's definitely thought provoking, but just feels disingenuous because of my personal experiences, I guess.
@@ryancampbell8618 Not to say that Hero of War is their best song or anything, coz honestly it isn't. I think it's an excellent song but not their best. But what I will say is that Tim wrote the song based on conversations he had with Afgan Vets so it may not have been your experience but it was definitely someones.
