Many well meaning people will tell you why you can't do something. When I started my blacksmithing business people told me I couldn't make a living at it. I made tools for the space program, worked on10 - 20 million dollar houses and sent my products all over the world. The big thing is to have a vision, fail a lot and pick yourself up and keep going. I got to do a lot of things I could never have dreamed about. I enjoy your work and your videos Thank you.

Iam running in to a LOT of people( family members) that tell me Iam not good enough to do woodcarving for a living, it will take to long to be good enough to make an income to support a family, you have a family to support. All that, but is is a heavy ness on my heart. It is just something I have to do and I leave the rest up to GOD.

Even if your carving is “rustic” or simplistic or looks like folk art, you can sell your carvings.
The only thing that prevents you from earning a living to support your family is how many pieces you can reasonably create and whether you are carving one of a kind stylized art that appeals to “someone” out there, or whether you are willing to supplement your income with small things that appeal to a wide audience and that you can produce rather quickly.
But most of all, don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough.
PS I started less than a year ago, focused on gnomes and caricature chickens, and sent a few with my friend to her farmers market stall.
She said people actually competed for them.
They weren’t all that, IMO but apparently they appealed to the type of ladies who wanted smalls from a farmers market.
Now I can’t carve them fast enough. Good thing I don’t have to feed a family though, since I don’t charge hundreds for one carving like those I see for sale online. My friend has been creeping the price up though, to see how much the market will bear😜

Love what Doc says in response to this! There are many people who make good livings even with simplistic art! Keep it up Noah!

Yeah I had a lot of people push towards college, I'm glad I saved the money and spent it on all my tools instead. You'd still have to get your name out there. Just pursue the things you love. There's so much information out there for free these days right in your hand.

Luckily carving is a hobby for me. But it can cost a lot for tools and wood. I found that making earrings can sell all year long. I can use up my scrap wood and it is a nice break from carving detail pieces and while watch football. It does not make a lot of money but covers the carving expenses. This year people have been asking about my other carvings. Not sure if I want to sell other carvings because my hobby would become a job. Oh well, love your videos and glad you chose being an artist.
