This is an ancient Greek song from 200 BC, actually found written on a tombstone , the words are " as long as you live be happy,do not grieve at all, life's span is short, time exacts the final reckoning" . This Gallic lyre is almost identical with the ancient 10 string Greek lyre

And the lyrics are almost identical with the English Medieval song Miri it is while sumer ilast: th-cam.com/video/7UvesKl8_W8/w-d-xo.html

The lyrics of Seikilos Epitaph has a nice meaning to it.
    while you live; shine,
    have no grief at all,
Life only exists for a short while,
    And time demands its toll.
    (I remember the lyrics, yep)
The guy who wrote the song dedicated it to his dead wife, since she died pretty young apparently. So the meaning of the song in which he intended it to be is that life is short and can end at any given moment, so live it to the fullest.
200 BCE and still going strong. Thought this love piece was particularly beautiful as love rarely correlated into marriage during Ancient Greek times, although im not too sure which city-state this guy was from. So love truly was blossoming in their relationship.
Human-nature has not changed that much to think of it.
Love truly is a magnificent force.

In these times of isolation, I am always delighted to discover beautiful new/olde music - and a haunting instrument - like the tenor Gallic lyre - I was not aware of. And this man - contemporary appearance, with the markings of a modern age...could yet be an ancient Celt/Gaul adorned with the woad of war and of life!

Benjamin Simao - You're welcome. I know it might sound crazy... But is there a possibility for you to make a video on How to build a Lyre with 10 strings? Just a very simple one. Not very big? I had a Citara when I was a child but it got lost in one of house movings. I really really really would like a Lyre. It's soooo hard to find!!! Here, in Brazil, there is only one guy selling and it's just not really affordable for me, so I'm thinking about making one. 😁

Seikilos Epitaph the oldest Greek song
Το αρχαιότερο τραγούδι, Επιτάφιος Σεικίλου N.Karantzi
Seikilos wrote his song after 200 BC. in a tombstone column that is 40 cm high and contains in the common Greek of the Hellenistic era an epigram of twelve words and a member (song) of seventeen words along with its music. At the top of the column, the epigram mentions the person who wrote it, as well as the purpose for which he wrote it: ΕΙΚΩΝ Η ΛΙΘΟΣ ΕΙΜΙ.
(I am the stone, I am an image. Seikilos put me here as a timeless signal of immortal memory).
In the middle there are the lyrics of the song together with the symbols of the melody, which is of the so-called phrygian type:
    ΟΣΟΝ ΖΗΣ ΦΑΙΝΟΥ,
    ΜΗΔΕΝ ΟΛΩΣ ΣΥ ΛΥΠΟΥ.
    ΠΡΟΣ ΟΛΙΓΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ ΤΟ ΖΗΝ,
    ΤΟ ΤΕΛΟΣ Ο ΧΡΟΝΟΣ ΑΠΑΙΤΕΙ.
    Performance in modern Greek
As long as you live to shine,
    don't be sorry at all.
    Life lasts for a while,
    time requires payment.

It's really beautiful to think that thousands of years ago, when the world was completely different, someone played this song for a lost love. Those people's world and names are lost to time, but the song lives on and I would expect they would never have thought that their song would've survived thus far.

Benjamin, this is wonderful. I'm learning this at the moment. I play wire harp normally and am new to lyre. Could you please tell me the tuning sequence you are using. My lyre has nine strings. Many thanks.

thank you! Diatonic is good. I'm used to diatonic with my harps. In fact my lyre is tuned diatonically already.

I'd love to look into buying one of these , or possibly bartering for one of these harps with a painting I would compose and execute of you playing one. Are you the maker of them Benjamin ~Simao ?as well as the skilled and subtle player?? Lovely in every way! ;-)

far right in the background, is that a crwth? Interesting to see one built like that. Since the bridge isn't through one of the soundholes like normal, I'm guessing it's a redesign with a soundpost, right? More intricate outline as well. Almost looks like a vielle with the hourglass shape. Though, after adding the soundpost, I suppose the only functional difference is the shape of the bridge. I might borrow that design.

    • @AtelierTriNoxSamoni
      @AtelierTriNoxSamoni  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes it's the Crwth according to the Saint Martial de Limoges Psalter, from the 11th century :-)
