Indeed but the cats can get out of control when owners do not exercise full responsibility - letting cats which no longer appeal to them to become stray and cause a lot of nuisance to the neighbours. In addition, cats can reproduce very fast and hungry cats are very fierce cats.
@@Maris_S28 You NEED to be more educated about cats and pets in general. When sterilization of cats are done, most of their caterwauling will be gone. Whereas dogs bark as and when they like [see another dogs/humans/animals/etc.]. In my neighbourhood, on average, I hear about 10 times of dogs barking over 1 of caterwauling. Just the other day, I saw an owner with her dog peeing on the void deck pillar and she did NOT even bother to spray/pour some water over it. Just allowed her dog to pee on it and walked away as if nothing is wrong. Most cats use cat litters in their home, while most dog pee and poop on the grass field. Those urine you've stepped on might well be from dogs. I like dogs as well but facts are facts.
Agreed, cats use litter boxes most, if not all of the time at home for their 'business'. That makes cat much, much cleaner than dogs who have to go out of the house to do their 'business'. @@Siti-iu1ne the most obnoxious types are those that stay in private landed properties walking to nearby public housing estates to let their dogs do their daily business and even talk down to the residents that it is their right. Many foreigners with dogs are also similar culprits.
cats control rodent population, plus theyre great stress reliever. I feed more than 30 stray cats daily in our country, and many people do the same. There was one instance when the security team of shangrila hotel in very upscale BGC ordered all stray cats within their property be caught and brought far away and leave them to fend for themselves. A big portion of the BGC community including foreigners and foreign ambassador wives staged protests to bring back the cats, they also asked that the security team be sanctioned. Some of the cats were recovered, some were lost forever. Now the cats are free to roam in the upscale community, volunteers come to feed them and give vet care. All are neutered and of course all are up for adoption. Now the cats have their own fb page and has become a tourist attraction
I have seen cats running away from rodents. Yes, our Singapore cats are well-fed andwell-pampered, they don’t need to be hunters anymore. So l don’t think we can rely on solely cats to police the rodent population. Everyone and the authorities are responsible for the preventative measures. Cat lovers, dog lovers, snake lovers, etc can have FB pages and even create mini zoos for their animal loves, but it’s not tenable to have the entire island of hdb estates to become tourist attractions for the creatures - especially not everyone has the same quirks.
You took away their natural instinct to hunt when you keep feeding them which actually hurt nature's eco system. Do you seriously think they still go after rodents? The same goes for other animals, if you keep feeding birds, they become bold and start to fly into homes searching for scraps. Do you seriously think you are doing the right thing? Yes, to be kind...you can help an injured animal and nurse them for a while, it's good, but if u make it a habit to keep pampering them, you are doing more harm to us and to nature than you think.
The most stupid and annoying rule to have ever existed in Singapore. Cats never make loud noise unlike dog. Dog abit only bark like crazy and then pee anyhow wah i very annoyed leh every time must walk carefully just because of dog pee. And then disturb everyone's peace because of dog barking. I always hear dogs barking from another HDB flat opposite ours.
I rescued 13 stray cats a day before typhoon hit us. They never left and I'm glad.. they keep me company, happy and busy. I also feel safe. I live in an area with snakes here and there, these cats protected me from an intruder once. I'm happy we all found each other. Never had issues with hygiene as I always keep them and my house clean. they're all potty trained, never loud and never made any ruckus inside the house.
What a FINE city, truly. I smell bias-ness and finding ways to monetise by instilling these policies with more rules. It always down to individual responsible pet (all animals) ownership. If humans themselves can't take care of their household what makes you think they can take care of pets. Ban irresponsible owners.
The intention to lift the ban is filled with business opportunities for those in power and mischief to create more unease in HDB estates already plagued by errant foreigners disturbing the local community. The problems created meant more neighbours become wary of each other and therefore rely on politicians MPs to resolve the conflicts the lawmakers created in the first place.

Recently I noticed HDB there are larger breeds of dogs (eg: Golden Retriever) by owners! Why is this happening? HDB only allows toy breeds 🤔 dog owners who do not clear their poo should be fine! 🤬
Ya! like as if dogs don't defecate (worse they don't bury their own poop!), make noise (some bark non stop for hours!!), and many of them when see each other dog start fight also. whole neighbourhood woken up because of those very high pitch barking and yelping cos owners immune to the noise. walao as im typing this also got dog barking but i hear no cat caterwauling lol
many cats around my house, they are noisy day and night. that is what I think first. But after I made peace with my environment, I found cat are my protector. No mouse, no insect, not even a gecko. Yes, they poo and pee around the place but all I need to do is to clean it. All I need is to make peace with them and I found they are not annoying me but instead, helping me.
The ‘fact’ about cats pooing and peeing is just so incomplete. Do dogs not poo and pee? Cats are known to be very clean animals. Dog owners take their dogs out to pee and poo in public places and a good number of dog owners don’t observe some common ‘rules’ like picking up after your dog poo and spraying some water with detergent on dogs’ urine. I’d say in the interest of animal safety, that if cat ownership is allowed, cat owners in high rise apartments should have safety measures in place.
True. That's why I dare not walk or exercise at a 'field' in front of my block, in case I accidently step on something nasty and smelly. Every morning I see some dog owners bring their dogs there to do their business. And, I can see a few do not have plastic bags with them
Exactly, the "facts" mentioned by the MP is just bewildering. In fact, cats pee and poo in their litter boxes at home most, if not all of the time. Cats do not even need to go out of the house to do their 'business' unlike dogs. So what is the logic behind the MP's point about cats peeing and pooing? This shows their "rules" are made on groundless logic. There is probably some other hidden and likely BIASED agendas behind banning cats that we do not know, only the ruling party knows.
As long as the cats are kept in the house and not let roaming around without proper care. In my residential area, some residents living in the terrace houses just leave their cats roam around the roads and sewage nearby and the feeder community is the one that is feeding the cat. They are foreign breed and the look so bad, when we try to take them to clinic and stuff, the owner accuses us kidnapping his cat. These kind of people should be banned from having any pets
The rich don't normally live in public housing though. In private housing, you can keep any pet you want, so I don't really think it's about not offending rich people

This is to stop people from keeping more than 2 cats in their homes. There are cases of people keeping more than 2 cats in their homes and gets complaints from the neighbors because of their irresponsibility to keep them from causing problems to people. As a responsible pet owner of whether is cats or dogs, it is our duty to train them to behave and teach what we are expected from them because you would not want your neighbors to file complaints against you because of your pets and your irresponsible actions to stop your pets from creating problems in the neighborhood. If you keep a pet and not hold responsibility for the pet, then you need to be accountable for your pets bad actions if any problems are created by them.

The restriction on keeping cat is real for people staying in public housing in Singapore. Just that most of us don't follow, I'm one of them. As long as our neighbours don't lodge a formal report to the authority and our cats behave well, usually nothing will happen :) for example, once my cat loitered along a common corridor and went into my neighbour's apartment. They complained to the authority who called me to restrain my cat within my apartment to resolve the complain. I was given advice and so far no more issue.
What about dogs, though? Do they not defecate or make sounds sometimes? They're all the same, they're all lovely animals. I couldn't, for the life of me, understand why... So happy to know there'll be some changes :)

Should ban cats & dogs in flats. If it's banned , people don't dare to be openly offensive & be mindful that their neighbours have to tolerate noise etc.. if they need to keep pets. Flats (&; communal spaces) are getting smaller & don't make life more difficult with pets all over...

I do believe responsible pet ownership and licensing courses on taking care of animals should be something required for keepers of any kind of animal, not just cats... but well, at least this might be progress for Singapore.
I live with 10 cats and they're neutered, vaccinated and potty trained. 1. Difficult to contain in a hdb - not true 2. They shed fur - don’t dogs? 3. They pee and poo - we do too 4. They do caterwauling sounds - dogs bark. Humans scream
Singapore government don't really use common sense.. They prefer to follow legacy, if it's been like that since our grandfather days, there's no need to change. It's been shown from cat behavior experts that cats prefer a familiar environment, are very sanitary and easily trained. The problem is when people adopt elderly stray outdoor cats who are not neutered and don't take measures to prevent wandering. Outdoor cats who have established familiarity and comfort with outdoors, will continue to want to roam. Whereas cats who have been kept indoors, naturally do not want to roam. Cats also have a need to bury their defecation and hide their scent. Which animal doesn't shed fur? Talk cock.. I agree unneutered cats are very noisy but this is a neutering issue.. Dogs on the other hand, bark all the time without proper training, why don't you guys enforce that all domestic dogs and their owners must undergo mandatory obedience training before being licensed to stay in a HDB? Do you know how noisy it is for dogs to be barking everytime someone walks past their unit?
Full disclosure : There are like a dozen cats in and around my house. I don't consider myself their owner but rather someone sharing the space - we coexist - they mind their business and I, mine. It's a tragedy that the existence of every animal n plant is at the mercy of Humans. We make the rules for their existence. We crossbreed them as per our desires - like a master puppeteer. Quite a lot of species are already extinct. I wonder if we are indeed a plague on this planet that we call home.
I have two cats since they were kittens and they do not get bored as they have each other, they have been sterilized so no issues in caterwauling, I did not train them but they used the litter box almost naturally. They are indoor cats so I have the means for them not to leave the apartment and hence, not annoying anyone but me. I find cats to be much more suited to apartment life than any dogs. I do agree, tough, that outdoor cats require more control as they are much more in contact with other people's property including the public areas. In developed countries such as Singapore, you should enforce the chip system in all dogs as they have to leave the apartment for walks and do their natural necessities also cats to avoid the double interpretation of yes to chip if outdoor cat and not if it is indoor. .
Such a ban would never apply to my city, but we have legislation that cats must be ID marked and that you must register your cat and if it is allowed to go outside without a leash, it must be neutered/sterilized
They pee, poo? So like any other pets? Cats don’t even bother to leave their beds let alone go outside. You won’t even know someone has a cat until they tell you or go into their house. Even so, they are more likely to hide when they see you bcs they don’t like strangers. As compared to dogs who can poo anywhere (don’t even need litter) when they are out for a walk and bark loudly, that is allowed? I have seen a small dog suddenly tried to lash out furiously at a random man passing by. Lucky the owner was pulling the leash. But this Louis ok lah at least he does something. Just admit the reasons for banning were stupid and unfair.

Fairest comment. Most ppl here lean towards cats. Only reasonable people are able to see things from all angles. They aren't unfair. That said, I see more stray cats than dogs around hdb. People don't report when they see a cat on the street because we are so used to it as they have always been a common sight and some ppl know they can get away with being irresponsible simply bc ppl will just walk past them. While if it's a dog, some will already call SPCA or bring it home.
I saw the dog owners just let the dog pee around and not clean at all. While I saw the cat, it go and dig a hole to poo and pee and cover their business instead
dogs bark uncontrollably and louder than cat's meows, cat's territorial conflicts are less invasive than dogs barking, dogs pee and poo as well, dogs dont groom themselves when they smell they smell bad and strong while cats groom themselves very regularly. All races are generally accepting of cats, Dogs on the other hand have to be more weary, especially for our muslim neighbours. I dont understand the argument and reasoning for cat bans
Some rental flat also keep a few cats and already not enough money to feed human still keep cats that's makes me wonder. Is not cheap to keep any pets in Singapore.
Dogs are way more dangerous and loud tho, I'm a cat person, and9ne never made a loud noise, instead the neighborhood dogs are barking like crazy but no one dares to remind the dog owner. They don't even leash their guard dog and litter everywhere. It's a dangerous and unhealthy neighbor problems now 😭
I don't think this is going to work well. Singapore has a low number of land pests like cockroaches, rodents, mice, squirrels, frogs and the predators that follow these animals, like lizards and snakes. Who do you think is controlling this population? The publicly owned cats that have free ground access.

I was almost mauled to death as a kid and I still live with it. I also can't stand that loud pitch barking. Whoever came up with that law has some kind of hatred towards cats. Cats are also comforting for people with anxiety. So thankful its being reversed, 🙏
Bark.
This is crazy!😂
reminds me of the time when i was small, about 10 years, i went to my family friends house and i did not know at that time that they owned a dog, so i was roaming around in their house and opened the bedroom door only to find a Labrador that was bigger than me staring back at me i got startled and started running away and the dog kept chasing me all around the house for a good 10 minutes. scariest time of my life lol
Welcome to Singapore!
Exactly, there is so much noise from dogs’ barking when the owners are not at home. I prefer to have neighbours with cats.
Based on my experience caring for both, I can vouch that cats are MUCH cleaner and softer than dogs by LEAGUES AND MILES. Senseless ban.
Let's not forget the mental health benefits of a pet. It's bull.
Yeah, lol... Seems more like singapore dont know anything about pets.. Ive never heard such nonsense about cats...🤣😂

@@vinnysing1324 Dogs bark and birds make noises. Even the equipment for goldfish makes noise. That's just part of having a pet.
Sg has a lot of lonely people, it's good to have animal to keep them company
Get fish
But PAP hates the Malays and wanted them to be lonely and feel like outcast, thus the cat ban. All such form of policy discrimination must end.
Indeed but the cats can get out of control when owners do not exercise full responsibility - letting cats which no longer appeal to them to become stray and cause a lot of nuisance to the neighbours. In addition, cats can reproduce very fast and hungry cats are very fierce cats.

I mean how often you heard a cat caterwauling than a dog barking ? Such a nonsensical law. .
You will hear very often when every hdb unit can have 2 cats and also try not to step on cat urine then.
Domestic cats are also mostly indoor animals unlike dogs which you have to walk them regularly, thus cats will not pose that much of a nuisance to the public. @@melvintay7074

Your experiences with animal urine in public spaces are more likely from that of dogs or people.
Ban cats but you see dogs peeing at every wall and corner of the HDB estate. Best part, the owners themselves watching their dogs do it.
Many of the dog owners actually use the dogs to pee in the void decks to take revenge on society and PAP.
this one is very true .both my condo and hdb are full of dogs fecal matter . my hdb void deck and staircase and also at the sun deck near the swimming pool are so dirty nowadays due to irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs do their business in public places

@@meikahidenori I live in the city... there is not much for cat to hunt.

I live with 10 cats and they're neutered, vaccinated and potty trained. 3. They pee and poo - we do too
4. They do caterwauling sounds - dogs bark. Humans scream
Singapore need to accept the fact that Cat rules the world
Singapore government don't really use common sense..

The govt of Singapore is the worst government after America and Israel.the cutest animal is now banned for the people
This is obviously very stupid, when you can see a country like Turkey exists.
Fine city. Fine solutions to everything
In developed countries such as Singapore, you should enforce the chip system in all dogs as they have to leave the apartment for walks and do their natural necessities also cats to avoid the double interpretation of yes to chip if outdoor cat and not if it is indoor. .
Luckily Malaysia doesnt hv this double standard law
Such a ban would never apply to my city, but we have legislation that cats must be ID marked and that you must register your cat and if it is allowed to go outside without a leash, it must be neutered/sterilized
I have seen HDB with 10+ cats. The government don’t care even when they know
They pee, poo? So like any other pets? Cats don’t even bother to leave their beds let alone go outside. You won’t even know someone has a cat until they tell you or go into their house. Even so, they are more likely to hide when they see you bcs they don’t like strangers. As compared to dogs who can poo anywhere (don’t even need litter) when they are out for a walk and bark loudly, that is allowed? I have seen a small dog suddenly tried to lash out furiously at a random man passing by. Lucky the owner was pulling the leash. But this Louis ok lah at least he does something.
