V/Line N Class locomotive-hauled trains at Southern Cross Station during Peak Hour

  • In this video we visit Melbourne's Southern Cross Station to see V/Line's N Class locomotive hauled services during the afternoon peak. Here we see the N Classes operating long-distance intercity services to Bairnsdale, Swan Hill and Warrnambool with N Set carriages, and short-distance interurban services to Bacchus Marsh and Geelong. During the afternoon there were 10 scheduled N Class services to depart Southern Cross and we see all of them in the video.
25 N Class locomotive was built between 1985 - 1987 and have served as the backbone of V/Line's long-distance intercity services for decades, as well as assisting in the peak hour commute running short-distance interurban services. However the role the N Class has played on Victoria's rail network has diminished in recent years as more modern and faster Vlocity DMU's enter service.
Since 2018 the Vlocity has replaced most intercity services to Bairnsdale, and in 2022 completely replaced all intercity services to Albury and Shepparton. N Classes are also finding less use on interurban services as the Vlocities offer superior performance for these types of services.
In some respects we're approaching an end of an era for locomotive hauled trains in Victoria as there's plans in the near future to replace N Classes to Warrnambool and the remaining Bairnsdale and interurban services in the next several years. Infact one service I recorded; the 16:19 Bacchus Marsh service has already been swapped with a Vlocity. This video was an effort to record regular N Class trains at Southern Cross station while I still can.

N Set carriages shouldn't be scrapped, they are solid and have plenty of life. Why not used for Adelaide service by VLine???? Overland carriages are much older. Also, Harris carriages should be used for Blue Harris train restoration project. Do not destroy our history!

It’s because everyone points to a Vlocity and says they’re good only because they are fast. Thank god people are preserving them

We shouldn't milk trains forever, Victoria has to keep up with the rest of the world in public transport aspects, that's why the Comeng trains are getting scrapped, they're just not up to standard with the rest of the world. The N sets and N class is a good train, but the shunting is just not reliable while double ended trains like the VLocity is what we need.

@@MelbourneRailfan They're up to standard. They look like any regular communter or passenger train.

@@NoCallerID70457 The N sets are fit for purpose, But the H sets are not

Totally agree. Since the Victorian Government pay for the service they should have a say into rolling stock. The N sets would make a marked improvement to the service.

It's down to two H set services now to/from Bacchus Marsh. It was five at the start of the year. For people who want a ride and haven't already, think about it soon because I don't think they will be around much longer.
I caught the 4:19 on Monday two weeks ago, which ended up being the last week of N Class operation for this service. Fantastic ride and the driver was super horn happy too!

The Bacchus Marsh H Sets have certainly dwindled a lot faster than I would have thought, so many services have been swapped with Vlocities in a matter of months.

Speaking of H Sets, I thought it would be good to have them for interurban services to and from Warragul during peak hour.

Do you think an N Class Locomotive could be repainted in the Original V/Line Livery just like A62 & A66.?

Vine said all N and P and remaining Y classes will be sold off to freight operators while A66 will be kept as an emergency locomotive

I'm guessing that those few remaining Y Class locos that are stabled nearby will end up being withdrawn as Loco-Hauled Sets will be progressively replaced by V/Locity DMU's too.

I was going to say HCĹASS acceleration for passenger service isn't great, for goods trains the reliability of them is wonderful.
Can I ask why the speed limit is so low at Southern Cross? I know there are many hazards at large yards, but this ìs ridiculous!

Excellent footage of the N's mate, well done. Gonna be boring once they go of course. But will be interesting to see what happens with the sets and where they go to after V/line and where the N's end up as well.

These won’t be going in years. They’ll be going in months. Plans to have only two Loco hauled Warrnambools in the next few months plus the removal of the HSets and Bairnsdale. Days are numbered.
