Y'know, Near Light would've been so much better if Nearl lost to Viviana. Since Vivi's whole pedestal that Nearl was put on would be shattered and give her room for more introspection, then Tola vs Viviana is just a neat matchup which has the same light vs dark theme as Tola vs Nearl. But also can have a sorta civilization vs the wild thing with Viviana's Leithanian background against Tola hating nomadic cities and what they represent. And that fight could go either way due to neither of the two having the Nearl mandate to win, Tola vs Blood Knight was great and a hypothetical Viviana vs Blood Knight would be a legitimate fight for the infected on Blood Knight's side. Nearl could have a moment about maybe realizing that she's not so perfect and that maybe Mlynar was right about something then getting more involved in the backstage stuff with Pinus and Toland instead.
The problem with Nearl is that she is the image of the perfect knight of Kazimierz because that's what she is to the actual evil force in her nation. Commerce and the commodification of its Knights. Would that be a better story if she actually were a bit of an outward dreamer? Yes. But that's not how HG decided to take it. Nearl's battle is a conceptual one. One for the spirit of the people with those that seek to pervert the ideals she embodies. The flip-flopping of her Infected Status, for example, was merely a tool used against her both times. Because her embodying this ideal was a threat to the system. It still is, but now the CCC is more prepared and Nearl remaining "Infected" was the greater threat in the moment. In short, Nearl is a Mary Sue because what she has to be for her narrative. Even when Toland says that Mlynar is the living example for everyone who has experienced the Campaign Knights days. Maybe we'll get some humanity when her parents come back. Dorothy on the other hand is deeply tied to the corporation we already had a complex relationship with: Rhine Labs. The place where Ifrit was experimented on and both Saria and Silence tried to minimise damage to her in their own ways that implanted a person with a brain chip that appears to slowly be taking over. Which directly sets the stage for every other character in that corporation. Just from that we already know that all people deeply involved will have a more complex moral setting than the perfect ideal that is being tainted and perverted. Including the Director of R.L. Originum Arts Section. But Dorothy isn't the sole star of her event. She is being mirrored by Astgenne and her idolisation of one Ferdinand Clooney. Who made Dorothy a victim of her own ambitions and experiment. Which is, I want to say, the other half of how Dorothy was humanised where Nearl just wasn't. I believe that people wouldn't love her as much if Dorothy had been just a dreamer who woke up. A dream that put her at odds with others, yes. Yet without the added exploitation people might've ended up more upset with her FOR dreaming a naive dream without considering its costs and consequences. Not to mention that scene in the "matrix." I know I needed that one to unabashedly like her. Because that's what tied everything together. Her motivation, her naivety, her goals and what the misuse of it all actually meant. Remove that one and Dorothy takes on a whole different character. All in all, I am 100% with you that Dorothy is by far a better character. When you ask me where I see more potential for their story to continue however, I have to give it to Nearl. It's not that Dorothy's is over, just that Nearl has a lot more setup for it to actually continue. Even Lone Trail just used Dorothy's research without acknowledging her much, making her event a mere stepping stone for it. One of the things I will complain about with L.T. Which is also the fate of the next Kazimierz event, I fear. But that's HG for you. Maybe we'll get actually good characters out of it though. Not that I have too much hope for the one after.
As much as we're on Dorothy sanctuary here, I'd like to say that there are some flaws in her character or at least things that didn't click for me. The whole setup around her until she appears and her own conclusion are great, but once she's presented in person her actions and motives are quite confusing. At the same time she has her motherly attitude wanting to nurture the people in her dream project and protect those silver things, but at the same time she seems confused herself. She doesn't have the total convinction in her experiment despite going very far in unethical behaviour, which she should have if she made it this far and want to side with the silver things; but at the same time her intents weren't towards fighting the others really (you could argue it's what makes the mental conflicts but I don't think it's useful there). It's like the story didn't want to explain which side she took in her thoughts at the time before the conclusion, and Sonny character showed us better the situation than her. And after everything happened, the story reflected all the blame on Ferdinand which I thought a bit bizarre since she had a part in the experiments at least, it looks very manichean where it should not. Add the confusion plus her quiet look and nature with the narrative complexity of AK plots in general and you have the little defaults I wanted to point out. I 100% agree on Nearl tho. She got to be one of my favourite character designs in the game, but it's disappointing how they just made her a marie sue in this normally complicated context which is the country of Kazimierz. It's okay we have so many good characters in this storyline.
I wouldn't say the story put all the blame on Ferdinand as much as it showed that he would be the one to take the fall as he and Kirsten were in the middle of a power struggle and space bud wanted him gone, now as for her actions and motivations I think they actually do make sense for her because of a strange and warped world view, I can cover that more in a dorothy video. Fair critiques dorothy of course isn't perfect, and I'm no doubt extrapolating somewhat where I'm not meant to... And yeah it's sad how much of a dud nearl is in near light when it seemed like almost everything else clicked.
When I saw Margaret Nearl in the Maria Nearl event I instantly knew that she was going to massacre the whole Kazimierz storyline, she literally descends from the heavens to save Maria, I was so hyped for the whole fight and I was hoping for whislash to rush over to protect Maria somehow and buy enough time for Mlynar to show up. Imagine my disappointment when I saw the person coming to help Maria was Margaret, literally out of nowhere without any hints in the story beforehand, and then Margaret doesn't even show anger to the twin knights trying to literally murder Maria in bright daylight, she just disarms them and pats them on the back, imagine how much better it would've been to see Margaret doing mental gymnastics to calm herself down from wanting to kill the twin knights.

Nearl is that character that’s kinda attached to my beloved Blemishine’s story. Maria was out there in the first event being a lovely cinnamon roll. Totally naive, dreaming of the fairytale era. Actually wins through all her stubbornness despite the warnings of her uncle despite her own weakness and by the seat of her pants. Then realizes, wow, I almost died. This actually sucks, at my core I'm not about this life, I'm actually a nerd. Retires and becomes a blacksmith, following her real passion. 10/10 story. Absolutely hilarious. Then Near Light happens, not really a continuation of Blemi's story at all and kind of a confusing meandering mess of a plot. Nearl just ploughs through and things work out around her? And Blemi got reduced to cheerleader, when she was the original Kazimier protagonist. Also, Nearl is quite a cardboard character. But, hey, her 0 deploy slot function is nice.

considering your L takes on both Talulah and the sarkaz I already have a bad feeling on your media literacy. However, as it's been a while since I've last read the near light event trilogy I will give you the benefit of a doubt on your opinions of Nearl but I will voice my complaints on your comparing of her to Dorothy. In your comparison you made one of your points to be that Nearl had all the good guys cheering for her while Dorothy had all the good guys going against her which is blatantly unfair as Nearl was a hero in her event while Dorothy was a villain so it's a no-brainer how the good guys in each respective event would view them. Not to mention each event has a fundamental problem that each character would have to tackle with some being more complex depending on what route each character goes to try and solve the problem. Nearl being pro-infected and trying her best to have the general public see the infected in a better light and show casing what a true knight should strive to be is a fundamentally straight foward goal that has barely (if any) contradictory issues that would have her be forced to rethink her ideology as the only obstacles to that are corporate greed and anti-infected sentiment that she wouldn't let shack her ideals. Dorothy on the other hand has a fundamentally complex problem to solve being that she wants to prevent pioneers from dying when exploring the wastelands but used a morally dark grey method to try and achieve that goal which leads to conflicts between her and the good guys as well as herself. Siege, even though is a hero in her story, realizes that the people in Victoria needs a proper leader who can bring them out of this predicament and she herself is not sure if she's up for the task, especially when there are other higer ups also vying for power of the throne so of course she's going to feel self conflicted. Overall it's probably the simple premise and goal of the Near light story is what truly prevents Nearl from getting a proper story arc
I am neutral between Dorothy and Nearl (I didn't like both of them) but I think Dorothy's story is more interesting than Near Light. If Platinum and Toland didn't appeared in that story I would never invested at all.

The problem with nearl is that she kind of doesnt feel like an actual person/character. she feels more like a plot device. its like the writers knew what conclusions they wanted for the major trilogy, and used her to achieve them. but they forgot to make HER actually interesting. HG as a whole has a problem with their super strong, heavily focused characters. chen, nearl, texas, and probably a bunch more characters i dont remember have this problem of taking screen time from characters that are just... more interesting. and the major trilogy makes that really clear. in an event centered around a wild tournament arc, the least interesting parts of the event are the fights. everything outside the arena? decent, great even. everything inside the arena? boring and disappointing. maria almost fell into the same problem, but luckily(or unluckily) nearl replaced her completely. but because of that, maria was left with nothing for near light and just became an unimportant side character. what makes this problem even more obvious is that the only actual cool fight in the arena... didnt feature maria, nor margaret. the fight near the beginning of near light where that one infected gets bullied to death is insane! but every other fight feels boring, sometimes even frustrating. tola somehow got a decent fight, but even then, more could have been done with him. margaret just feels like she is her own ideals, and nothing else. i cant even dislike her, because she just... isnt a character. i think i conveyed my thoughts clearly.

Nearl has made me give up on arknights writing. Whats the point of being intrested in a story if they are only gonna develop the banner characters people are gonna roll for and also Like their 4 or 5 favorates And leave everyone else in the dust

I suspect that like Old Well, Nearl is a writers waifu.
honestly youmake some really solid points in this video that i 100% agree with
also the true answer one is roing one is not
Jerboa moment
thats it , I'll be drawing Ela x Dorothy yuri
People care about Dorothy when Ela exist ?
Well ela can't be cute as Dorothy is.
Ela traps are haven't any damage!
And ela isn't technically a trap master she is a sniper
She is ash with ability using the stun and fragile thing in map!😊
And ACTUALLY SHE HASN'T JP VOICE ACTOR LOL
Dorothy is peak, Dorothy is life!
10:52 that one is mine lmao, the story behind it is that I was halfway through getting drunk and decided to just post in the card one of the copypastas I had saved from who know where, and what better character to post a copypasta of than perfection herself
You sir are a true pastor of the faith
I have both at lvl 90 m9 mod3... both is good
thank you randy marsh for vindicating my horse hatred
is this satire or is your media literacy really as lacking as it would seem?
Even if it was satire or even if he was lacking. Why is bro so mad?
Jellyfish on top
Can I just buy Le Jerb?
Yes.
@@livingrain thank you
Nah nearl character development is peak and very good so does dorothy but i think this is a taste think rather than 1 being better written than the other bcause for me dorothy motive and actions was dumb i understand she want a better world but kidnapping ppl and putting them to sleep so they can be living battery for her liquid metal thingy yeah that will make the world a better place even if we add ferdinan manipulation its still a leap of thinking that making this thing will make the world a better place anyway as a margaret simp i just want to say f*ck u other than that i think there more bad written characters than nearl(in ur opinion) or dorothy(in my opinion)
Rororirorororororororororororororoing
My glorious perfect never did anything wrong queen Nearl being slandered *insert that one image of Deku saying it cannot be here*
Any time I hear deku now I just think of the "We're not done here! Daddy isn't finished!" Clip
@@livingrain Deku might've had the worst fall off ever
Nearl is not beating the allegations
She will forever fall to the allegations
Blondeknights player here, both are peak. Period.
A bunch of my favorite characters ARE blonde, but also my two least favorites
@@livingrain may i ask who are those two least favorites? vermeil?
@@theoreticallyme4548 Am I allowed to say watch my worst characters video to try and bring it an extra view? They're 1 and 2 there
@@livingrain Degen and nearl, got it. sorry for asking
I will M9 dorothy as for my apology.
@@theoreticallyme4548 Good, prepare to have the best op in the game
But I like them both...
It's not too late to pick a side It's either infected or not, there is no Rhodes Island.
For some reason HG cant seem to nail protagonists...
Alright opinion, one issue.
Rhinelabs story is ass imo and thus makes doro a shit tier waifu.
13:02 villians
minor spelling mistake, checkmate dr rain
Nearl has made me give up on arknights writing.
Whats the point of being intrested in a story if they are only gonna develop the banner characters people are gonna roll for and also Like their 4 or 5 favorates
And leave everyone else in the dust
Stop with all this COWARDLY "in my opinion" garbage. Present your opinions as facts. Anger those Nearl enjoyers. What are they gonna do, engage in a genuine and productive discussion about character writing in a video game? I doubt it.
Well you know some of we ...
Nah very of us weebs Don't know why we should respect others logic
I AM SORRY YOU KNOW 😂
DON'T GET ME WRONG
Generic d tier gacha design indeed.
I agree, nearl IS trash
1:10 JUST when you tap on her in the base ...
