The Argon and the Cobalt work really well as a team taking different parts, but I've been layering mine together letting the Argon do some texture while the Cobalt does the grabby stuff. Hopefully Modal eventually do a take on Granular FM synthesis at some point. 'Krypton8' in acid green with green or yellow LED's. 😎
Cobalt8x on the way, really hoping they find a way to poly-chain it with the argon. Looking for a cunning solution to do the same with my Hydra desktop. Maybe something from retrokits.
Best demo I have heard yet. It's nice to hear that the Cobalt8 can do so much more then buzz and grit. I'm trying to decide between the Argon8 and Cobalt8 for my first synth. I've been leaning towards the Argon8 because it seems so much more diverse like more bells, tics, percussive, flowy, dreamy, ethereal not just buzzy and gritty, but this demo showed me that there is good diversity of sound in the Cobalt8 too. Thanks for this demo. I would love to hear a couple flowy, dreamy kind of soundscapes without any buzzy gritty sounds if your up to it. Thanks!
My desktop version is coming tomorrow. What I love most about this is the almost instantaneous patch creation with just a few tweaks. It won’t replace my Minilogue XD analogue but compliment it for sure 🕺🏻
...will wait for the rack version (that is also planned to be released soon, hopefully) as I have the Argon8M and need to save as much space as I can in my room.
Great demo. If you hear the Cobalt, you wonder why some people spend like to much money on the new P5... (owned the original P5 like 40 years ago, currently own 2x Cobalt 8M)
@@subwaygaragemusic I've owned a P5, a Prophet VS, a PPG 2.3, MiniMoogs, Matrix 12 and many more (oooh wanna have) synths in the days they were made. I don't care for brands, or whatever OSC tech specs. I do listen to sound... ;-) That's why I made hit records when I was young. :-)) Have fun with your P5.
It sounds quiet nice, but I don’t see any advantages opposite my Minilouge XD instead of 4 more voices. And again as the Argon8 it lacks of a real usable reverb.
Monologue XD is an awesome synth, but 4 more voices could be a huge deal depending on a player's interest in a traditional polysynth and the types of chord voicings they tend to play.
They're pretty different imo, even though they look similar. The different waveforms, four pole ladder filter, deeper mod matrix, 8 oscillators per voice and the extra envelope make it worth it to me. This sounds pretty different from the XD to me as well.
Cobalt8 has the better sound, but different capabilities due to the very different oscillators. Nicer filter, too. Sort of regreting Argon8 now. =\ I can still push my Argon8 to do stuff that I can't on my other synths due to its funky oscillators.
Could someone say the big difference between the Argon8 vs. the Cobalt8? I can't tell, besides they have a different flavor of sounds. But they seem to be able to do many very similar things. If I mostly aim for synth pads etc., which one should I go for?
The Argon8 is a wavetable synth and can do more radical sounds and sounds with subtle differences by using different waveforms. But I don’t think it has a particularly aggressive sounding filter and I don’t think it can self resonate. The Cobalt8 seems to have a better sounding filter but lacks the number of wavetables. I think it might have a third lfo too.
Bass Station II isn't new (that AFX mode is, though), and it's analogue as opposed to the fully digital Cobalt8. They can overlap, soundwise, with the Bass Station II having the edge by being analogue, but the Cobalt8 can go places that the BSII cannot in sound design. Having both is better ;)

Love The Sound Of This Well Done Modal
If Modal keep launching products like this, they'll gain a nice market share. Nice vid...
Wow, this sounds wonderful! Thanks for the demo.
This thing sounds incredible!

I have too many keybeds and prefer modules as well.
Space... The final frontier😅

I get their point of owning the P5...the Prophet name, Dave Smith oscillators etc...but then again - preferences.

almost sounds like a modern roland JP-8000. Even has a similar color

Sent my Argon 8 back as I didn't like the sound. Hopefully will like this, good so far!
What didn’t you like about it? I’m torn between the two
@@sergiosensation6 just didn't have any sparkle, all sounds I'd heard before in other synths.

Gosh! What happened to your left hand? 😱
Well, I spilled boiling water over my fingers that was meant for tea. I drank the tea anyways ;)

The Cobalt Psoriasis!
Sounds like a Novation Ultranova. If you're gonna go digital just get a VST..
So people are buying a firmware update in the same hardware synth.
😆😆😅
it has a different internal hardware just the layout is the same!
yes, thats exactly what this shouldve been for us argon 8 owners that they robbed in the first place, its a shitty synth

For the money and what I need, give me the new Novation AFX any day.

The Novation AFX is an analogue monosynth... apples to oranges.
