White, unless I'm using analogous colors - then I use a complimentary color that falls in the middle so when the paint rolls over the top the base pops through
I watch a lot of paint pouring videos but I always come back to yours for practical information that’s hard to find anywhere else. You are an excellent teacher and you almost anticipate the questions us newbies are about to ask ! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your curiosity about how things work in this world. Have a wonderful holiday!
I like how you tell us the tricks to the trade, not many people do, its like a big secret...I also like how you have answered everybody's comments on here.
I am not sure why a lot of people do that but I'm in the business of instructing and adding value. It's the best win-win for me an for the viewer. I also do try to answer everyone's initial comments but I don't always make it to the replies.
Left Brain you my dear are the most popular out of any on TH-cam. Whenever someone has a question, you won't believe how many people say," watch left brain", just wanted you to know 🙂
You're an excellent teacher!!! I always use a basecoat as I feel the colurs stay brighter and I don't lose pieces of the painting as I do without! Thank you so much for all your tutorials 💗 💓 💖
Wow! A light bulb has gone on in my head after watching this video. I wondered why sometimes you see paint poured round the edge of the pour and it's all made sense now. You are an amazing tutor, explained so simply and clearly by your demonstration. Love this Chanel. Thank you again.
I’ve been wondering about base coats for a while so thanks for this video. Also, just want to say that I love ur vids. I’m also not a creative person but came to pouring just as you described. Getting tips from you often feels like you were in the room with me watching my learning processes. Now I get why. I appreciate your vids a great deal and learn a lot from you. Thanks!
I really appreciate that Melissa! Pouring was hard for me at first until I started really testing to figure out why things do what they do. Then it really started clicking for me.
Did you see the light bulb go on over my head? Now I understand exactly what base coat is for does & why I should prob'ly always use one! Thank you! Cuz' base coat you did was green, could really see & watch it go -- haven't seen white base coats that well, on white canvas & viewing on my "Crapfone". I also like how you paused & pointed out things going on while tilting. You really are a great teacher! I should know, am retired teacher of "little ones". Thank you...now I get it with visual cues to jog memory
I haven't yet started a paint pouring project... ( I will!!...I will!!!! ..I promise. lol ) but I have spent many days watching lots of videos and yours in particular. You are an awesome teacher and I am learning so much...of course..I need to start pouring to really learn!! Many thanks for your videos and your sharing of your experiences...much appreciated. David
I am new and have not tried this yet, but am fascinated with this type of art. Your videos are very easy to follow and to understand. I can’t wait to get started😎
Thank you very much Melissa. You really do need to get started. You learn so much more by doing! Plus there is no other feeling like creating something you really love.
I agree with others.. your 1 of the best regarding of sharing your skills and insight for free. Others would lets us pay for course. I hope i dont give u ideas now lol. Thx much appreciated
I'll continue to share for free on my TH-cam channel. There might be an accelerated learning or community in my future but the TH-cam channel will continue on regardless.
yes, base coat is the main foundation for HOW your pigments can move around also on the canvas if doing pours. One hack to try and keep edges from rolling off is to hold a corner bent cardboard at the corner when tilting so you can contain it also as much as possible. is how i do it sometimes. good video. thanks for sharing.
Thank you do much for not only telling that things happen, but why things happen, that helps so much. I just want to add. If you forgot your base coat or change your mind that you do want to keep your edges even if you did not put a base down you can put a ring of paint around afterwards . Now I did not compare yet if that works the same or just similarly but it definitely also helps to keep your design and just like the base coat this additional paint is just being “swallowed" as the paint with your design flows over it.
Thanks! That gave me a lot of insight into why some of my paintings end up loosing half of their “outsides”. Love your experiments, they are insightful and right smack on the money!! Really enjoy your channel. ❤️🌷
I love learning from you, you break it down so easily and make it understandable. Thank you so much I was waiting so much money and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong on everything I was trying.
Wow. I never questioned myself, why a base coat? I just did it because every video I watched they had a base coat. Now I am going to play with this to see what I can come out with.
THANK YOU!!! I finally know why I was loosing my pattern. Love to see that base coat does not have to be black or white. Will try with base coat for sure.
Thank you! I just started paint pouring 3 weeks ago & have been completely ignorant about base coats - what to use, why, & how. Your video gave me the info i so desperately needed. I look forward to having more successes instead of the big flops i've been getting. 😆. But, every day & every pour teaches me something new.
Love this. I like the idea of doing two or three pieces and changing whether you have the base coat or not. You can get a group of paintings that feel themed but look different... if that makes sense.
Thank you very much for this demo. And I must say these colors actually look quite nice together! I often tend to overthink on the color combinations. This has inspired me to loosen up a little ;) thank you once again.
I'm new to pouring and your videos answer so many of my questions. Please keep posting your educational videos. They are gems. I understand a lot more about base coats after watching your tutorial. Now I wonder how much paint should be on a base coat. I know that different pours require different base coat thickness but its kind of guessing how much paint to put on the canvas- not as much for swipes vs more for flip cups etc.
Great information!! I have watched tons of videos but you always seem to have the best information regarding the basics of how to do things! I am very new to pouring and I have only done 5 paintings so far so I really love the information that you share! I really have learned a lot from watching your videos!!!
This video popped up as a thumbnail after Fiona's most recent video today. I wish I'd seen it before I painted today. I'd experimented, it didn't work, I learned... Learning by doing is definitely the best. Now you can take what you learned yourself from what I try to point out in the video and make an even better painting next time Rebekah.
Oh that's funny I was thanking you for this logical approach and subbed before I looked at your name. I'm in IT and build/fly FPV drones, but I've been feeling creative and been doing DIY stuff. Thanks for making it easier to jump in with both feet.
Eight months ago I gave painting a go. I love it! There's so much to learn that's part of the fun. Thank you for this information and helping me learn how to pour paint. I enjoy your videos.
Another good experiment. I really like a base coat, that's just me. I have started writing all this info down in a notebook. You have helped me learn so much:) Thank you, I like black or blue in a base coat
Yes! I agree with the other person's comment! I have learned much! Thank you so much for doing this! And for all the experiments that you do! I appreciate it very much! 💙💗💜💚❤💛
Thank you very much for this tutorial. I want to do a 5 panel geode for a big wall. I am really learning and you are saving me for making a lot of mistakes.
Oh my goodness. This video just explained what I’m doing wrong with pretty much all of my paintings. I end up trying to manipulate the paint too much because I have no base coat and the next thing I know- mud. 😒 Thank you SO much for opening my eyes to this and expanding my mind (as usual). You rock! 🙌🏼☀️😊
Yeah, some of the base coat does end up making its way to the surface (or just below the surface) adding to the depth of the painting. That doesn't always happen depending on the relative weight of the paint but in this case it definitely did.
It’s been said before but let me say it again: your videos are so practical and helpful! Thanks so much for taking the time and energy to share what you’ve learned! I was drawn to this video because I have a lot of trouble with covering my canvas, even with a base coat. It seems to always be areas that end up not getting covered with paint, especially on the side as the paints simply doesn’t want to come off the edge. I’m guessing it might have to do with my paint being too thin. I do hope that I’ll master this bit soon as at the moment I have to spend several minutes at the end trying to touch up and cover the edges which is not fun.
Thank you Marie. It is a common problem. Too thin so it runs off too fast is one issue. You can also try using a piece of cardboard on the corners as you tilt so not as much falls off.
I notice in the video you don’t actually cover all of the edges with the base coat first, just do a puddle. I wonder how come the green base coat doesn’t stick to the canvas like the paint on the one that doesn’t have a base coat?
LBA-love the right pour. The colors really worked! Typically what I will do with this type of pour is have whatever color I want to put down around the areas that need it as I’m tilting rather than automatically putting a basecoat down you could possibly save paint by just pouring it around the edges as you tilt so that it maintains the design. Main thing I use a basecoat or what I think is also considered flooding the canvas, is for ghost swipes to keep asoft wispy look. But I do not leave a lot of paint on the canvas because the colors can bleed into your flood coat and you lose the design. I’ve been trying to break out of my repetitive color rut. I typically go for jewel tones in metallic paint. I need new combinations if anyone cares to share!
Thanks for the tips. I usually subtract my base coat paint amount from my total paint so I am not flooding the canvas unnecessarily. Lately my favorites are ocean themed.
Wow! Thank you so much for this great info. I am a new at this, and your lessons are really helping me to understand the benefits of the base coat. You are a wonderful Teacher. Thank you so much. Blessings!
True Orla. I haven't found a way to do that where I can keep a more symmetrical interior. The ricochet (which is an awesome thing to call it by the way) always makes it look a bit awkward to me.
What is your favorite color to use as a base coat?
White and black.
Black
Waiting to start. Artist for dirty some yrs... Fear here
White, unless I'm using analogous colors - then I use a complimentary color that falls in the middle so when the paint rolls over the top the base pops through
I like any shade of grey mainly

You can do it my friend. If I can, literally anyone can. 8)
Thank you so much for teaching us what others claim that they have to keep for themselves.
Yeah, I don't understand that either.
I have not tried a ring pour yet. Now I know why when I see videos of ring pours I always think, they just lost the pretty part. Great video!
Sometimes tilting it off is fine but sometimes you just want to keep everything.
This is so what I needed! I have lost so many cool paintings due to not having a basecoat! So helpful thank you for doing your experiments!!!
You are so welcome Kendall! I use between 4 and 60% of my total paint as my base depending on how stretched you want your piece to be.

It does work mostly the same. You get a little more stretching in the middle but you can definitely keep the paint on the canvas better that way.

Here's what I need to learn: How to stop tilting my tablet in keeping with you tilting the canvases when I watch your videos. 🤪
Lol. I find myself doing that with my phone too. . . . great minds Meg.
Thank you for helping me understand what is going on with the paint. You are giving me extremely valuable information and I deeply appreciate it.❤❤❤
It really is a pleasure to help Barbara.
Thank you for explaining why to use a base or not, big difference!🙂
No problem 😊. That's how I learn so it is a win-win for everyone Carmen.

This is music to my ears. Acrylic pouring should be fun and exciting without the stress and disappointment. I am so glad this is helping you Mary.
I love watching your Chanel you are so informative. I really appreciate you and your art!
Thank you so much Michelle. Glad to help.
Thank you for that. I had wondered if a base coat was a waste of paint now I see for me it is a more desirable effect.
Just take the base coat amount away from the total paint amount so you only have the perfect amount rather than way too much.
I like the colors and watching this - of course it makes sense. Thank you!
So glad Marna. Happy Sunday!
David, I ALWAYS learn something new in your videos. Thanx soooo much for your tireless efforts to help us improve in our art. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Love this. I like the idea of doing two or three pieces and changing whether you have the base coat or not. You can get a group of paintings that feel themed but look different... if that makes sense.
Absolutely does Angela. I was making these to demonstrate a base coat but I can totally see the same thing being used for series of painting.

About 30% of your total paint should go to the base. That's what I have found at least. You are right though Linda. Every technique will be different.

De nada Glorivee . Un placer.
Using an "edge catcher" would also save the edge colors since you could "ricochet" the paint back on the canvas.(See Expressionist's Art Studio)
True Orla. I haven't found a way to do that where I can keep a more symmetrical interior. The ricochet (which is an awesome thing to call it by the way) always makes it look a bit awkward to me.

Glad you enjoyed it Cathy.
Thanks! I've been using a flow extender around my pours to do much the same. I enjoyed seeing both ways and the result.
What extender do you use?
I usually use a thinner white or black paint. Typically artist loft brand, mixed with floetrol and GAC-800. Water to thin consistency, no trace.
Very informative. Thank you🤗
Glad it was helpful Nancy.
