Choose the right consistency for your Dutch Pour!

- When doing a Dutch pour you don't want paint that is too thick as it won't get cells and it won't spread out very well. You dont want super thin paint either as it has a greater chance of muddying the colors and of getting grainy looking (flocculation).
I show you what the same painting looks like with THICK, MEDIUM, and THIN paint and why each one is different so you can choose the right consistency for your Dutch pour.

There should be a law making it mandatory to watch this video before attempting a Dutch pour. Thank you so so much for showing this! It would have saved me a lot of paint 😂😂
What cell activator do you use please?
For Sheleeart blooms i use either 4 parts floetrol to 1 part paint, 9 parts floetrol to 1 part paint, or only paint and water. I haven't splurged to get Aussie Floetrol.
Aw, you are the best. Glad it was so helpful Ramona.
YOU AREA THE BEST TEACHER FOR FLUID PAINTING. I LIKE THE MIDLE ONE. TAHNK YOU FOR SHARING.
Wow, thank you Goyo.
As a retired engineer, who’s trying to develop the creative side of my brain, I really appreciate your very detailed technical videos. I Just discovered your channel yesterday. Wish I had found you sooner. Your videos explained my fails. I feel I will be much more successful now that I understand what went awry.
Thank you so much!
Great to hear Robyn. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have them.
Hi, I do have a question about consistencies of the paint utilizing the Amsterdam Pearl paints in puddles on a black background & then wrecking the puddles. Would you recommend medium consistencies for all of those paints?
I had a complete fail where my pearl colors got lost in the black paint. I suspect my paint was too thin.
Thanks so much!
Yeah, pearl and metallic paints are very transparent so you want to keep them a bit thicker so they don't thin out and get overpowered by the opaque colors.@@robynreppuhn
@@LeftBrainedArtist thank you so much!!!
I really appreciate this video. I've been pouring for ages (long before it was a thing), but cells have always been my nemesis. Seeing the difference in consistency will help me a lot. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, always.
You are so welcome April.
Thank you
This was so helpful to watch....with you actually showing consistency. Got it!
My pleasure Donna.
You seriously have the best test ideas…love this channel. ❤
Thank you!
Chock full of useful information as always, David. Thank you!
Luckily I love to do these for my own learning too so they are win-win.
A very informative video so thank you. I prefer the middle picture myself but others may like the thick or thin. It's great to have a video that compares the three together.
That was exactly what I hoped to accomplish. None are bad, just different and understanding those differences is helpful for future pours.
Thank you David. Clear Education. But I Love all 3 if It are flocks or cells. Its Art. 😊
That is a great way to think about it.
Love the colors, and another very informative video. Thank you
You are so welcome Mary.
I always watch 2 times or more. The info is so beneficial….Thankyou
Wow, that is awesome to hear. Thanks Josie. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have them.
Thank you so much. I love the medium thickness.
Thanks Veni.
Very helpful, since I’m just started pouring
Glad I could help Will.
I used to make my paint thin for my dutch pours since that was the consistency almost everyone says. I struggled perfecting my dutch pours for almost two yrs. At some point, I thought my problem was the blow dryer I was using which is the Drew Barrymore Flower hair dryer. Then I tested making my paint a bit thicker and lo & behold, I got successful. My consistency was the middle one on this video.
Crazy how something like that seriously affects your pour.
Absolutely! Thanks for all you do & for all you unselfishly share to the pouring community.
Hello David! Great to see you! Great demo - thank you xx 🎉
Hey, thanks Fran.
Thank you so much for the territorials! Very informative ✌️
Glad to help my friend.
Your videos are very informative. Thanks. 🎶💞🎶
Glad you like them Jan.
Beautiful. Just love it
Thank you so much Olga.
Really enjoy the comparison video! Thank you for your time 😊
My pleasure my friend.
I would love you to test “high” vs “low” on your blow dryer. I have the same one and I’m always trying to figure out which is better to use. Your videos are always so helpful!
I explain and demo that in this video Elizabeth - th-cam.com/video/6ReGfEzL3gI/w-d-xo.html
I think you use high or low setting depending on the consistency of your paint.
I learn so much from your tutorials, thank you! I now realise why I sometimes get flocculations!
Happy to help Sabrina.
The poop emoji cracks me up 😅. Great video! You always manage to teach me something even though I've been pouring almost 2 years. Dutch has never been my forte but I've had some great results along with some really horrible results. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You're bomb!
☺😂😅
Thanks my friend.
Omg. I literally just mixed paint up to do my first Dutch pour. It is sitting to get the bubbles out. Now I see mine is way too thin! Just in the nick of time I can go add more paint! 😂
Try some on a piece of paper first just to test.
@@LeftBrainedArtist Thank you!
Thank you for making it so easy to understand
You’re welcome Karen 😊
Great video! Thank you for all the information! I use the GAC 800 to stop the cracks. For me the top of the paint was drying faster than underneath. GAC 800 stopped it. that.
Great tip! Thanks Diane.
Appreciate your vids. Thanks
Thanks for watching again Walter.
Again I have learned so much from you, very much appreciated
Glad to hear it Leah.
I really like the way you broke this down!
I have to so my little pea brain can understand it.
@@LeftBrainedArtist I have one of those too!
Thank you so much for this video. Many informations and very interesting things. 👍🤩
For me i love the thicker paint due to design. But I love the medium for cell and the mix of paint. 🤗
Have great day to you!! 🌈
That is exactly what I hoped people would take from this. None of these are bad, they are just different.
Love love love the green in a Fall pour. Really helpful comparison. Did you do a video on additives?
Only the one I did a while ago about why I would add a 2nd medium to a pour - th-cam.com/video/N9LQt5r61Zg/w-d-xo.html
Hi. Really informative video.
I used consistently gauge with the numbers on the side, what number would my paints have to flow down to. to get the right flow for a Dutch blow
Thankyou, your a great teacher 🙂
I don't use that gauge so I couldnt tell you unforunately. This would be a pretty thin consistency for a dutch pour so probably 1/2 agian what your normal stright or tree ring pour would be.
Great video thank you for the info ❤❤
Any time Jeanette.
Really interesting video, David! Thanks for the comparison, very useful. 😊
Always glad to help another Dave.
@@LeftBrainedArtist Good man, we need helping!😁👍
Flocculation is the bane of my existence. I always make sure to add some GAC 800 for some extra binder. I remember you did a video using Arteza pigments a while ago. Have you ever tried using them (pigments) in a dutch pour? I’ve had issues with the pigments separating from the emulsion and “gather” in spots. Just curious. Great video as always. 🐻
I did in this video - th-cam.com/video/go76LqGOPVI/w-d-xo.html Whenever I use pigments I try to use at least a little bit of a very sticky medium (liquitex usually) to help with that.
Very interesting 👍 And as always helpful 😊
Loved your experiment. Would it be possible to layer the medium paint on the bottom and then add a second layer of the thicker paint on the top to get a combination of the thick and the medium results? I really liked the vividness of the thicker paint, but liked the cells and breadth of the medium.
You can, however, you get much different results when you mix consistencies. I'll have to experiement with that one day.
Have you tried Zinsser paint extender instead of Floetrol? I was reading Floetrol is 85% water.
I haven't tried Zinsser. I did try a few other brands with none of them being better than Floetrol.
I absolutely love all your experiments! I can't tell you how much they've helped me begin pouring. I'm curious about your collection of PM'S. I've got the same white glue, just starting to try Floetrol, but I know for sure the Decoart PM has worked well for me. How does the Decoart PM compare to all the rest? Edit: I just followed the links to the videos where you answered my question 😄 Thanks!
Glad to see you found that video.
@LeftBrainedArtist I'm making my way through all of your Library them all slowly. Your videos are indispensable! Thank you for sharing everything with us.
I’ve watched a lot of your videos over the last week and yesterday I made my first paint pour piece of art. I’m very happy with the result because I got so much information from your videos before I attempted a painting . One question I have is what varnish or even resin should I use to give it a glossy glass like finish once it’s dry.
I did watch your rose clock which you used resin over wood and I really like that finish but my painting is on canvas. Would resin be suitable? Thanks for making such great helpful informative videos I can’t wait to make more
You can definitely resin over canvas. I do like just plain gloss varnish from Liquitex too.
Hello, I’m fairly new at this craft. Not much of an artist, but really enjoy this type of painting bi started with cheap acrylic paints, next went up to next level, then last I used Liqudex paints. I use Floetrol to mix the paints with. I usually have a thin consistency. One thing I’m not achieving is getting a bloom that is vivid and defined. I usually get a muted color with no definition. Also, I’m not getting much cell action. Though I’ve added silicone oil to a lot of the paints. I’ve heard that using Floetrol it creates cell action. I need a lesson on this. If you have one in your archives can you tell me which one so I can watch it. I have learned alot from your videos. Thank you sooo much.
Anytime you use floetrol it will be a little less vibrant than if you used professional pouring medium or just paint and water because the floetrol has a slightly white tint.
For cells the technique really is important so here and the videos I would recommend - th-cam.com/video/vUo126Js6Qw/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/Z-fauTeq1Y0/w-d-xo.html
let me know if you have more questions Sharon.
Can I use housepaint as base for dutch pours? I'm curious about the ratios to use for it 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I normally don't recommend using house paint for dutch pours unless you spin them to get as much paint off the surface as possible or else you'll get pitting and cracks.
My main interest is in getting rid of cells. It seems here that the thicker the paint the less cell creation. Is that right?
Correct. Plus using a medium like liquitex or glue-all which don't generally cell. The technique matters also. the less energy the technique createst the less cells. So flip cup will cell but a straight pour or tree-ring pour won't if done slow and steady.
I love the comparison! This has put into context why I wasn't really loving my Dutch pours... I always hear "thin thin thin" but after seeing this, I realize I prefer the medium body!
You know what would be a great comparison to see? Same colors with a Dutch pour vs a blow out. I know they are different, but are they really THAT different? Thanks for posting!
Uh, I don't even know what the difference of those two would be. I always considered them the same thing. Using a hair dryer to blow paint. Are you talking about having extra "flood" paint before blowing? if so I did a video about that - th-cam.com/video/5OVOvQ-IjNA/w-d-xo.html
@LeftBrainedArtist as far as I've seen from a few other artists, a dutch pour specifically means you blow the base paint over your colors first. A "blow out" is just a general term for blowing out your colors... kind of like fingers/thumbs thing. I've seen a few artists make the distinction. Is this a myth??
@@alexandriamonk2345 Lol I don't think anyone has a 100% answer for that but for me it is all the same. Just different variations.
@@LeftBrainedArtist of course! Ad is the water content you showed from medium to thin consistency! Who would have thought a slight variation in the water would change the outcome? Fluid art is so much fun because how different things turn out by changing one aspect. I look forward to whatever you end up trying next!
Silly question. Why didn’t you torch?
I did off camera in between. It didn't do much but pop bubbles.
Can I use my left over paint for something else. Even though I know I missed up with the paint
Sure. Nothing here is necessarily bad. Each one just have different uses. If it is too thin you can let it sit and stir every half hour or so so it doesn't dry on the edges. That will thicken it a bit. Or you can add more paint/medium to thicken.
Where did you buy the mini hair dryer?
Amazon. Sorry I didn't realize I hadn't put that in the description. It is there now. Mini Hair Dryer - amzn.to/3BzSHFT
What tutorial should I watched next do you recommend what tutorial I should watch in a order
Really depends on what you are struggling with at the momen Terri.
I'm still struggling. I put down my white base and when i add a color the color spreads out and fades into the white. I did the drip test including the base and it still isn't right. I'm using glue with paints. Please help me understand what i am doing wrong.
What brand and colors are you using for each?
Arteza D. Brown, Titan. White and Met. Gold, DecoArt Met. Amethyst and Essentials Raw Sienna.@@LeftBrainedArtist
How do I change the paint consistency if the paint drips off the popsicle stick. I have added the paint, water, flow medium but instead of getting a steady flow off the popsicle stick, it drips off? How can I change this so the consistency is a steady flow?
More paint is usually the quickest way to thicken. However, stiring ever 5 minutes for an hour or two can help let some of that water evaporate.
Thanks for the quick response. By the way, I love all of your video's . They have helped me extensively. I am glad I found you on TH-cam.@@LeftBrainedArtist
