My ss5000 has this engine. It's been reliable and provides plenty of power for cutting tall thick grass. Maintenance has been easy. Use the synthetic oil that is provided with the warranty kit that you can purchase for additional warranty, and follow service interval guidelines, this motor will last a long time.
Some of the comments were brutal, but this toro engine is well worth the price. I bought a SW toro zero turn mower in 2016. It has the same motor that's in this video. It will backfire when you turn it off unless you run it wide open just before shutting it off. You won't hurt the motor running it wide open before shutting down, the governor keeps it from overrevving. I have had this mower for six years and zero problems with the motor. I change the oil each season, sharpen the blades and add stabilizer in the fall to the gas. I replaced the battery last year. I did not like the idea of having a Chinese motor on the mower and did not know it until after I had brought it home and used it. Toro has a good reputation and I bought it because they stand behind their product. It still runs like a new one, I have no issues at this time.
I've owned and operated my V-twin for more than 3 years now and it runs and cuts like new. I know there are a lot of people who think steel is always better (try selling that to Kevlar) but I will say I'm happy about my nylon cam gear. It's incredibly smooth with no sign of ever needing adjusted or replaced. Awesome product Toro, really just an amazing machine all around!!
Haha cam gears never need adjustment, they reason people are butt hurt over the nylon cams is because of the problems they have caused over the years, I'm not saying Loncin ( the Chinese manufacturer) doesn't have it all figured out. Time will tell, I get about 2500 hours out of the motors they copied. After that I rebuild them and keep on abusing them. But I digress, this motor would not hold up in a commercial environment.
@@MacGyver-1yeah that's bullshit. You're not getting $2,500 hours of any small engine, whatever brand it is. Also, nylon gears have been used in so many modern engines, there are no problems with them. I don't believe you rebuild anything, I can tell just by the way you talk
@@carlosrobles2048Think what you want, the truth is the truth. Just about every motor that used plastic cam gears have problems come up. Look up Kawasaki cam upgrades that are one piece steel instead of plastic cam gears moulded on a steel cam shaft. Kohler bucket motors often had teeth break off the plastic cam gears if the cylinder didn't break off the block first, and yes I rebuild a lot of motors mostly twins off commercial mowers that I buy at auction and sell locally, Kawasaki fx, fd, fr series, Kohler command, command pro EFI, even some old magnum K series and KT series. Golf cart engines, Yamaha, and Kawasaki FE series. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.... Oh even Onan has issues with plastic on their cam gears, but it wasn't gears it was the the fingers for the ball and cup governor on the performer series engines, I've rebuilt them to in applications where replacement wasn't an option such as in two cases both welder generators
the nylon cam gear is not a big deal. my father was a diesel mechanic and he said they had tractor trailer engines with nylon gears with hundreds of thousands of miles on them and they didnt have issues. like everyone on here i would prefer metal but nylon isnt necessarily a problem. i hope this engine withstands the test of time and becomes a legend

Trying to determine if I'm going to drive an hour to get the one I want with the MyRide. There's a serious shortage going on around these parts. I couldn't even take advantage of the $200 off special because no dealers seemed to have the models I was interested in.
I ended up getting mine. Only two issues is the platform rubs on one side near the feet rest when pushed over (while holding the seat). Sawn one at Home Depot with the same problem. Second is the deck wash hose attachment broke the on the first use. Other than those two things I've been loving it. No stress on the back over bumps.
Awesome overview! I love the tear down and explanation! when purchasing an expensive item it's nice to see the inner workings explained. That has a lot of value for the customer. Especially in a mower like this because it's not well known like Automotive Motors.
@@MacGyver-1 that is very incorrect. This motor is made by the same company that makes BMW performance motors. It's an excellent motor and more powerful than expensive models\ brands. Also a modern design compared to a lot of the old Briggs, Kohler and Kawasakis. Also the twin carb is nice.
@@ArcolaBridge Loncin will make any motor to any price point, plastic cam gear?? Fail, also I would love to know what makes this engine modern. This a a knock off of the Kawasaki fh series engines. There is nothing inside that engine that makes it any more modern than the motor it copied. I'm not sure what your qualifications are but I rebuild about 10 engines a year. Reasons for rebuild are usually neglect with the occasional factory defect gone untreated. Normal use engines of this configuration ( air cooled v-twin) see about 3000 to 4000 hrs of use if properly maintained. In fact I will predict the most common premature failure of this motor will be burnt valves due to improperly adjusted valve lash. Just like on the the Kawasaki FH. But I digress. Please tell me what makes this motor so modern... PS, you will never see this motor on a commercial mower. Toro had Loncin make this motor to complete in price for the consumer grade zero turn market, this is a very competitive market and everything is designed to meet a price point. The manufacturer wants these units to ideally last 8 years at which point they want the customer to buy a new one. So once again you will never see this motor on a $10k toro mower. Those commercial units will have either. A Kohler command carb or efi , or a Kawasaki FX carb or EFI. Toro knows better than
@@MacGyver-1 I will take just about any engine over a Kohler command. Those pieces of shit are only good for blowing head gaskets. Time and time again. Also since you want to act like you know what you're talking about, I've seen more Kawasakis then Toro engines in my shop, complete with Dropped valve seats and burnt valves.
5 bolt heads and large head gaskets equal reliable sealing. Oiling system pressurizing the crankshaft first equal reliable bearings. Two barrel carburetor equals reliable cylinder filling. Ease of service equals happy customers. Nice work there, Toro
Texas Edge, oh yeah that motor is a serious contender. God damn excellence is what is it is, and by and large due to that nylon cam gear that so many think is cheap junk. They (the critics) cry and moan about a gear that never shows up as cause of engine failure, and swear they'll stick with their Kawis that uses heavy steel for the same gear- meanwhile they can't understand why their Kawis' valves need adjusted every 150 hrs or so, due to the excess vibration strain caused by their coveted steel cam gears, lol. Has anyone ever encountered a problem where the heat from the engine is melting the Jacket of both throttle and choke cables? I am also wondering if the cables were routed wrong from the factory???
What is the difference between the two Toro V-Twin engine options? There is a 24.5HP Commercial V-Twin and a 22.4HP V-Twin. Both are listed at 708cc despite the HP differences. The 24.5HP cost a whopping $800 more. I can find no literature specifying the differences between these two engines.
If bore and stoke are the same. Carb/Cam =More air and fuel =More hp/tq. Need to check p/n's for the cam if the same. Then it's all carb and you can buy the carb and have more hp/tq. But you will burn more fuel for what? I can see it if you need more hp/tq. if you are having trouble in tall grass. God bless and stay safe.
The carburetor for the 22.5 and the 24.5 I believe are the exact same part number. It might be a cam difference I'm not sure. It may also be a different part in the carburetor. I'm curious as well as I'd like to find the part to turn my 22.5 into the 24.5.
I own one and it has a 3 year warranty on the engine but I can't get them to do any thing to it . It back fires and they won't fix it I took it to the dealer for the back firing and all they do to it is what they can charge me for.
@@tonyjohnson1068 The best way to stop the backfire is run the engine wide open then turn the ignition off. I've had that engine for 6 years and so far, no problems other than the backfiring.

Looked at a Toro with a V-twin engine last fall, liked the look & specs of the machine but didn't buy. Went out the other day to purchase (year end clearance) but dealer was closed even tho their website said OPEN. Glad they were after reading comments about the engine. Too many negative comments about this engine, would prefer the Kawasaki. Will continue looking...maybe Cub Cadet??

I bought a 2020 titan with a 48 in deck. I have 3 questions that I would appreciate a logical answer from a Toro expert.. question 1. Why does a toro want to start the engine at full throttle,? 2 Why shut the engine down at full throttle? 3 why engage the blades at full throttle? I have never operated any piece of equipment this way. It goes against logic. You don’t operate any other piece of equipment this. Way. That I know of except a cheep push mower. If you operated your car/truck nothing would last very long.i have never owned a 0 turn mower but I have Chain saws, Blowers, string trimmers, small garden tractors.with small 2 cylinder engines and blades with electric clutches. Most engines need to warm up to get full lubrication. Looks like there will be a lot of extra wear on the engine, electric clutch and belt. As for shutting down the engine at full throttle I would think it better to let the engine idle a few min to cool down.
It will backfire bad if you shut it down at idle I have a toro 60 with the Kawasaki 24.5 hp motor and it specifically says to shut it down any full throttle and engage the blades at full throttle if u engage them at low throttle it jerks and jumps the belts

It doesn't mach up at all. It is a CHINESE made engine. They basically sourced a Chinese engine maker to make a "Toro" engine. In truth they put a Toro sticker on it.
Gilitar, fact is the Chinese flat out design and manufacture some stuff better. If this engine is Chinese, as you say, then hats off to the Chins for their innovative designs! Love that nylon gear- more efficient, quieter, smoother crank and less drag than conventional steel or brass. Love those over-sized piston rods too!
Solomon, I've heard that all the pro stock cars use nylon cam shaft gears, and that they run smoother with less drag. Perhaps they've come further along since 30 years ago in technology. Fiber reinforced, etc. Then again, I own this engine so I may be just telling myself it will be fine : )
@@rickcox1843 do you honestly think with all that fine milling work they are 'skimping' with one nylon gear??? i'm confident that nylon gear has extreme advantage. i remember when people said this about Glock pistols "a plastic gun...no thanks!"

Why two carbs instead of just fuel injecting it? Also, the "Toro" engine looks suspiciously like a B&S. Is it really? I would love to have heard you address the compression release system on the "Toro". Hope that is an improvement over the B&S Intek. The B&S compression release camshaft WILL let go grenading parts all over the inside of the crankcase. With luck no major damage, but highly unlikely. It is not a matter of IF but When. LOL..without a problem..I don't think so.I had two plastic cam gears fail on me with two separate Chevy engines from the 60's and early 70's When the plastic would fail on the teeth those little aluminium nubs left would let the chain jump time.
Where is your engine made? I know the Kohler is made in the USA, not sure about the Kawi? Also the Kohler has options that you are conveniently forgetting to show like a pre filter just like the Toro engine. Also the Kohler has a tool-less oil drain with a locking mechanism so if some pulls the oil drain like or it gets caught on a branch the oil won't run out of the engine all over your grass or driveway. The Toro oil drain is an open hose and will drain the oil sump! All Kohler and Kawai engines have cast iron sleeves in the cylinder. Again you kindly forgot to mention this. By you leaving out a lot of information on the Kawi and Kohler it feels like you are trying to trick people into thinking your engine is something great. Too bad you don't have real features that make a difference in the engine life and performance.
It would be virtually impossible to catch the drain hose on anything and drain the oil the way it is designed. Also, if you watch the whole video, at 5:18 he clearly shows the cast iron liner. I work part time for a lawn and garden dealer and we haven't had any major problems. They have been very reliable and the commercial guys love them.

Agreed with Johnson on this one. Just to add, nylon cam gear??? Really!! that will be the weak point of that engine. Also, polymer intakes are a good thing. They avoid "heat soak", which robs engines (exapecially air cool engines) of torque causing less air to get into the engine.
Yes And no. You have forced air from the flywheel sys. You will have heat soak with a hot engine that's not running. And will go away once you are running it. Why it does not have the time to heat soak. That has been tested with auto ind. Plus i am sure did the r/d on that engine for that.
I did some research and the toro engine is made in China and the Kohler is made in the USA. The Kawasaki is made in Japan. Both the USA and Japan are known for making great engines. How ever China is known for making low quality engines.
William, Kohler has been using nylon cam gears for over ten years- even in their commercial engines. I've heard that all the pro stock cars use them too. Cheaper they are, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are inferior- and especially when used with a governor set up for mowing lawns, meaning they don't see high rpms. Not to mention the technology has come a long way since the 70's when many of the car manufacturers starting using them. Today they have fiber reinforcement and other chemical attributes. Combine that with smoother crank and less drag, and I'd say the nylon gears will remain persistent in high performance engines for many years to come.
William Bissell, with all due respect, I never said that you called them "inferior". I simply made a statement that cheaper doesn't mean inferior. That gear could very well be made of nylon because nylon is superior to steel in certain circumstances- and not necessarily because it's cheaper. Hope that makes sense.
@@rickcox1843 if it was "cheaper" they would have just replaced that intake with rubber and saved$$ there dumb ass. i'm pretty sure they don't want their engines crapping out for a $3 part and getting a bad rep!
@@crabtrap crabtrap, I know this may be a leap of imagination for you, but you might realize that Kevlar can often be produced cheaper than steel- and that doesn't mean it's inferior to chain mail when it comes to stopping bullets from entering your body. The same can be said for hard drives, computer chips, parts, etc. Steel doesn't always mean better just because it may hold up better in a vice. But then again, you're not an engineer are you. If so I don't think I'll be buying your bullet proof vests. lol.
The oil drain hose, how stupid is that? Leave your machine unattended and an 8 year old child can drain your oil.Yay! Also if the hose comes loose from the nipple at the end dirt can get into the engine. Sorry but something as important as engine oil needs to be secured. Also since when is a wrench a "speciality tool"
The blue holders keep the hose in such a way it cant come undone. That is if you can keep your 8 year old away from it. I changed mine a couple weeks ago. Best oil change in my life.

I ended up getting mine. Only two issues is the platform rubs on one side near the feet rest when pushed over (while holding the seat). Sawn one at Home Depot with the same problem. Second is the deck wash hose attachment broke the on the first use.
Other than those two things I've been loving it. No stress on the back over bumps.
mine broke twice before it mowed the yard 3 times I got rid of it and bought another mower
Awesome overview! I love the tear down and explanation! when purchasing an expensive item it's nice to see the inner workings explained. That has a lot of value for the customer. Especially in a mower like this because it's not well known like Automotive Motors.
The mower that would use that motor is a cheap one

5 bolt heads and large head gaskets equal reliable sealing. Oiling system pressurizing the crankshaft first equal reliable bearings. Two barrel carburetor equals reliable cylinder filling. Ease of service equals happy customers. Nice work there, Toro
I can say without a doubt the motor is a beast. Very powerful

I know for a fact of the other engines have a pre-filter as well
I bought a 2020 titan with a 48 in deck.

Where is your engine made? I know the Kohler is made in the USA, not sure about the Kawi? Also the Kohler has options that you are conveniently forgetting to show like a pre filter just like the Toro engine. The Toro oil drain is an open hose and will drain the oil sump! All Kohler and Kawai engines have cast iron sleeves in the cylinder. Again you kindly forgot to mention this. I did some research and the toro engine is made in China and the Kohler is made in the USA. The Kawasaki is made in Japan. Both the USA and Japan are known for making great engines. How ever China is known for making low quality engines.
That gear is nylon because it’s cheaper. Period. Stop lying.
Rick Cox I didn’t d not call them inferior. You’re now lying.
William Bissell, with all due respect, I never said that you called them "inferior". I simply made a statement that cheaper doesn't mean inferior. That gear could very well be made of nylon because nylon is superior to steel in certain circumstances- and not necessarily because it's cheaper. Hope that makes sense.

The blue holders keep the hose in such a way it cant come undone. That is if you can keep your 8 year old away from it. I changed mine a couple weeks ago. Best oil change in my life.

Where did you learn how to lie this much?
Nylon!?
Seriously!?
Why must consumers that don't buy commercial grade equipment get absolute shit?!
Plastic...
Why not make the whole cam out nylon if its so great?
I'll tell you why, because it's not great.
Fucking Tupperware engine parts!
What an abomination!
I was no longer interested in this motor as soon as I saw the nylon gears. Chevy did this in the 60s / 70's and those damn timing cam gears were done in with broke teeth before 100k miles. it was not worth a shit then and its not worth a shit now. Thanks for letting me see the cheap ass crap you are putting in your " commercial " motor. LMFAO. I'll stick with the Kawasaki
Agreed with Johnson on this one. Just to add, nylon cam gear??? Really!! that will be the weak point of that engine. Also, polymer intakes are a good thing. They avoid "heat soak", which robs engines (especially air cool engines) of torque causing less air to get into the engine. Metal intakes retain too much heat.
