One of the hardest Bach's violin sonata to perform, because it is actually a trio-sonata and it is very hard to keep together the delicate interplay between the violin and the 2 hands of the harpsichordist, to perform this kind of dialogue, in which the violinist also keeps his own freedom in realizing the complicated ornaments. These 2 musicians have a very good coordination between them. Beautiful upload. Thanks.
I first heard this Sonata as a teenager and I have loved it ever since. My especial favourite movements at Mvt’s 2 & 3 A wonderful performance - thank you.
The adagio touches ones heart. Shunske Sato is a genius who must really understand Bach's deepest thoughts. the interaction between violin and harpischord is as close to perfection as it can get. Thanks for uploading this video Neth. Bach Soc.
Wonderful! These videos consistently inspire me. What beauty you are bringing into the world! Mr. Bach is most assuredly smiling at how these works still live centuries on.
Wonderful performance! And belated congratulations to Mr. Sato on being appointed artistic director of the Netherlands Bach Society; this actually occurred last year, but I only found out about this quite recently.
Two reflections. One, how the asian people has been so perceptive and sophisticated regarding western music. I am afraid we westerners have been far less perceptive in grasping the beauty ond delicacy of eastern music. Second, how the arch changed the sound of the baroque violin. The violin body is unchanged since the XVII century, but the arch and the absence of vibrato has allowed for a completely different musical experience. Thanks for posting.
> how the asian people has been so perceptive and sophisticated regarding western music< Well, I agree that *some* Asian are perceptive and sophisticated regarding western music, but it is not because they are Asian. That is a matter of musical sensibility: some people are gifted, while others are not. For that matter, the situation is no different with westerners, right? (Just an opinion from the Land of Rising Sun.)
Wonderful playing of the composition with perfect understanding and co-ordination between the artistes covering a range of sound forms really transporting one to the heavens. Thank you for posting this beautiful presentation,
I was surprised by the low pitch, which is much lower than the "usual" A=415. I supposed it must be Bach's own....but I am not knowledgeable about his standard. I hadn't noticed the low pitch in other performances in this amazing series, but in this case it is striking.

Why would Bach have his own pitch? Perhaps you're confusing pitch with temperament; one has nothing to do with the other. In the late Baroque, wind instruments were designed to play at chamber pitch (~a415) or French chamber pitch (~a392), which is about a 1/2 step lower than chamber pitch. (In the early Baroque winds were designed to play at a462 or higher.) I think this performance is at French chamber pitch.
It's French chamber pitch aka tief Kammerton. Bach didn't have his own pitch. Maybe you're confusing pitch with keyboard temperament. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Bach performed his music at various pitches ranging from a whole step below A440 to a minor 3rd above it, depending on the pitch of the organ and the pitch convention in use.

Mr Sato! First learn to count, then to read music, then leave your narcissism in your bathroom and only afterwards you maybe will be able to touch the first note of this Sonata!!!
I do not know if it is the recording or the instrument but the sound is too nasal (a little annoying especially at the high register). Otherwise the players are good and the overall performance OK.
Adagio 0:07
Allegro 4:09

What a treat! Perfection.
I know I am kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good website to stream new movies online ?
@Grant Jesus i use Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
@Beau Coen Definitely, I've been using flixzone for since march myself :)
@Beau Coen thanks, I went there and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it !!

Where could I get more information of good photographs of Mr. Sato's violin? Thanks!
Why are they playing with A = 392 Hz?
Why shouldn't they?
❤
The harpsichord should be a bit louder.
Maybe the harpsichordist should strike the keys harder or turn up the volume control on the amplifier.

What kind of violine is he playing?
Baroque.
An old German Baroque violin. Its make is listed in his videos of the sonatas and partitas.

how do i get a convex baroque violin bow like that? can't find it in shopping
Certain luthiers make and sell them. Perhaps it is imprudent to buy bows online, tho. Actually go to a violin-shop.
This seems to also be played in A=400 hz? Why is that?
I prefer A=440
Mainly due to the fact that this is a HAP of Bach's works and 400-415Hz was the standard tuning at the time.
Standard pitch depends on the area, it seems that 415 was the French baroque pitch

French chamber pitch tuning.
Do you know why such a tuning would be used in case? I am a little baffled...
@The MIDI Bach Project Thank you! I did not know that at all, although I guessed it had something to do with French taste and practices.

第三楽章は、バロックバイオリンでも、佐藤氏程度の、甘い悲しみの表現が、必要である。キリスト教的な世界である。

Either he's tightened his bow a hell hard or that bow's just wrong.
Baroque bow my dude
I do not like Sato's playing.
So out of tune that's hard to enjoy the music
Where is it out of tune?
his playing is not smooth
the violinist? he is very emotional with his playing as seen in the violin concerto 1052 video, that is not a bad thing!
You were probably taught to play a relentless legato and relentless vibrato.
@@espressonoob shut up
@@slmanbadr6832 Excellent argument.
Its a good violinist, but my choice is the Manze/Eggar's recording.
Terrible - it takes talent to make Bach sound so awful
the violin almost drowns the harpsichord in many passages , either bad playing, or poor recording,
overall a disappointing rendering of Bach.
