I was in Camp Pendleton during Marine Corps Recruit training when a staff sergeant announced that Vic Morrow had been killed filming a movie which we found later to be The Twilight Zone. Hurt me to my heart. We loved watching Combat as boys. I never forgave John Landis for being wreckless with his life and those poor little girls that died with him.

Actually there was was but only briefly. US Army infantrymen were issued camouflage uniforms during the Normandy campaign but the Army discontinued it because the solders were being picked off by their own men mistaking them for Waffen SS. The US did wisely issue them in the Pacific.

considering that this was a bunch of college kid's project, with a small budget and lack of resources, it is a very good film. True, there are some inconsistancies, such as exactly what size unit is involved(from what I saw, should have been a platoon), it does catch the feel and essence of battle. An overall pretty good effort.

It is right up there with Eastern European direct to VHS low budget makework projects, like Hail the Battle of the Glorious Hero's Liberation of People's Republic of Turdistan from Nazi Devildog Invaders (director's cut). Good luck to the production crew of The Hill in your new career in the fast-food industry.

I'm not going to list every huge mistake in this crime against humanity, but I will list some suggestions in case the creator(s) of it decide to do something like this to people again, and in case they read these comments:
    1. Officers don't salute enlisted men (they wait until the enlisted man salutes, then they return that salute).
    2. No one salutes in a combat zone (unless they are intentionally trying to signal to a sniper who the officer is).
    3. Soldiers did not have sideburns extending below the bottoms of their ears or hair that went over their ears. The "Major" is the most scraggly character of the whole cast and doesn't look or act like an officer at all.
    4. The only time one is allowed to salute with something (like a cigarette) in one's right hand is NEVER! When carrying a rifle one may salute by presenting arms as outlined in the Soldier's Handbook (FM 21-100). I realize that the major wasn't saluting when he put his hand against the middle of the front of his helmet, but that was this film's version of a salute, and is just as unacceptable as if it had been a correct salute.
    5. A salute is not rendered by placing the index finger of the saluting hand in the middle of the forehead as if to shield one's eyes from the sun. It's done by touching the right end of the right eyebrow with the tip of the index finger of the saluting hand. When saluting while wearing a helmet, one touches the edge of the helmet above the right end of the right eyebrow with the right forefinger. If these guys don't know that very basic part of military conduct, then they're obviously lousy re-enactors as well as lousy film actors.
    6. There was no Secretary of the Army until the National Defense Act of 1947 took effect. Prior to that, the cabinet position over the military was the Secretary of War.
    7. There is no such thing as the "Congressional" Medal of Honor, so no official letter would have used that terminology.
    8. Enlisted men address officers as "Sir" (or "Ma'am," as the case may be).
    9. A man that gets shot in the thigh and is evacuated to a hospital DOES NOT return to combat the very same day, and certainly not walking without a limp.
    10. Brothers were not assigned to the same company by the time of the Normandy invasion.
    11. German concentration camp guards did not lead infantry patrols in Normandy.
    12. Germany did not have enough Tiger tanks in Normandy to form a Tiger battalion. In fact, according to unit records and individual histories, only three Tigers were encountered in France by all of the Allies, and one of those was loaded on a train car.
If there's a next time, you might consider hiring a military consultant, or at least speaking with someone that has served in the U.S. military and/or studied the Battle of Normandy.

    • @dmrrobertson6856
      @dmrrobertson6856 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Wehrmacht didn't deploy them against US forces, as they were used where the real threat was, Caen, against British and Canadians. Ever heard of Michael Wittman? He had a habit of kicking our arses in Normandy. Look him up, svp. There were good reasons for US getting the west beaches in Normandy.

    COMNENT 13:
Final assault faulty - Need to at least study infantry tactics to emulate them on film. One those squads should have laid down a base of fire while the other advanced. The advancing squad shoots for and objective or set time drops and lays down a new base of fire so that the origial squad laying down fire now advances past the squad firing. This leap frog advance keeps the enemies head down and allows you to advance

That camoflage looked very alike the USMC camoflage used in the pacific, while this one used in the movie obiously is a german Platanenmuster patern camoflage.
Altrough, US Troops were fascinated by german camoflage and took home many uniforms as souveniers so it is not impossible that a US solider just took one for himself, but i guess their officers wouldnt be happy if they saw em wearing it.

Attention to detail is lacking, and as much as I dislike nit-picking, things like sideburns on a Major, the mismatched gear and 3 stripes on the medic, while possible, isn't probable. A bit more time getting details goes a long way in any military film. Spend the extra time next time out and the final product will shine. It's just plain worth it. Study some film and read a few books to get the little things right and the big things fall into place. Still entertaining, but it could have been better with more attention to detail.

+lakota164 If it was titled, half assed college video project, it would be somewhat acceptable.
When titled *_"Like Band of Brothers and The Pacific"_* Its no different than me saying my singing is *_Like Beyonce and Mariah mixed into one_* Then bleating out a song like a cat being tortured.

The term 'klicks' was not used before Vietnam.

the term "kilometers and/or "Klicks" was used in WWII...spellled with "K" not "C"
i agree with you this isnt a bad short film considering its like a Homemade one or "B" rated production...better than what i could do lol

Good effort. Better than some Hollywood productions I've seen! Ignore the nay sayers.

That guy around the 6:00 mark talking about how helmets are good for stopping bullets...bad writing. Helmets weren't made for stopping bullets, they are to stop shrapnel. They have stopped bullets before...but if you've ever taken one out to the range, you'll see just how little they do stop.

Very well done... kept my interest. My only criticism is that the uniforms looked a little too "clean" for a grungy battlefield.

The Americans didn't have bayonet lugs on their 30 carbines in 1944 either. Good catch on the Sturmgeweher.

The yelling WWI charge from the woods might have worked coming out of the trenches but not against MP-44 and MG-34 fire. Good job with the MP-44 by the way.

0:30 Love the out of focus to focus attempt for artistic purposes that then fails to actually get sharp focus.

    COMMENT 2:
    1. The LT has a 1943 Field Jacket that is about 4sizes too small for him. Tries to make it look like it fits by rolling up the sleeves and wearing his web belt like a cowboy on his hips. Anyone who has worn those types of web gear know that they ride only correctly above the hips not like a gunslingher from he OK Corral. I can only guess that it is to make the jacket appear to be like a 1941 battle jacket-Doesn’t work

I don't like to be critical and like to encourage people, but it would benefit any future military projects to consult someone with some military background and WWII infantry squad tactics, uniforms, and jargon.
