If I remember there was only a half dozen channels to watch on antenna tv only and always something fun and very entertaining to watch. Now a days you got 57 channels and nothing on. That's unless there is one of them shows on from back in those days.
@@michaelfountain1477, the drama here, is that these are all draftees, except for LT. Hanley, who was a Regular Army Platoon Sergeant, promoted to LT, on D-Day. Saunders fought in Northern Africa before that, which is why he is the only one with a camoflage helmet cover, and before the war, was a shoe salesman. And all the others, drafted into being Infantry riflemen. I have to tell you, having had Sgt. Saunders' job for 4 years, in a volunteer Army, I never heard the slightest peep of backtalk, like here. Nothing like this, and nothing to me, directly. Thus, drama, and why there should never be another American draft again.
My father was in ww2.used to watch with him.he said best depiction of the war of any t.v. or movie.. God bless those who fought in that war and all the other wars.
My Dad was in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was drafted in 1943 at 18 years old and in the European Theater fighting in many battles including The Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed the TV Show, "Combat" telling me that it was very close to the real thing. He's been gone for almost 30 years and I still miss him.
Technical Corporal My grandfather joined the Army at age 30.. he was a coal miner and he could have stayed out of the war as a coal miner, but he wanted to “get in the action”! Well, he did!!! he was in the battle of the Bulge as well... got hit in the chest, lost a lung.. survived by a miracle and the grace of God... it ruined his mining career tho! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Nick Adams does a great job in this episode, he adds a lot of presence to the role, something which a lot of actors do not have. I just love the looks ole Sarge gives him when he receives 'advice' from Nick about listening to the melody. What a great show, nothing like it today.
I liked the acting in Band of Brothers. And We Were Soldiers. And Saving Prvt Ryan. Enemy at the Gate. Jarhead. Seal Team. Blackhawk Down. Letters From Iwo Jima. Flags of Our Fathers. Zero Dark Thirty. The movie about the bomb and mine defuser unit in Iraq. Mark Wahlberg as the soldier who was saved by an Afghan civilian during that war. There’s plenty of great and good war movies from every generation and unfortunately there’ll be future war movies about our grandkids generation if we live that long …
I watched Combat as a child and I never realized that there was so much drama until now. The drama gives an excellent insight to the psychological aspects that combat soldiers are confronted with.
Watching Memorial Day 2019 ….This would be an appropriate episode for anyone to see on this day …. I wished that someone like MeTv or so would run a marathon of this show on Memorial Day and Veterans Day …. Thank You for airing these
This Veteran finds himself during Combat subconsciously doing recognition on WWII weapons, defense structures, vehicles, sites from different approaches, an endless supply of stuff:) Some cases of pretty rare pieces, like command Zundapp motorcycles. Enough reality feel without the smell and screaming. Vic was like most real good sergeants I knew, inclusive and plain spoken. So he could teach you how to stay alive. While not having a person resent him for teaching you the rude things. Things you would never had learned in civilian life for sure:) He was this 71 year olds generations Humphrey Bogart and he is missed:)
My condolences to Pierre Jalbert's family upon his passing this past week at the age of 89. He was a solid cast member who played a character that the squad could always count on. I always feel an actor's role transcends to his real life and that Pierre's loyalty and trust was also a facet of his personal life - a life well lived.
Maybe in 1960. Today it's the ability to read a script and play someone other than yourself and has nothing whatsoever to do one's character and/or personal life.
I’m 65 and I did the same Saturday nights but this show made me fascinated with military history I read Naked and the Dead when I was 13 and The Thin Red Line when I was 15. Then I read Johnny Got His Gun when I was 17 and I was hooked
@@701CPD The opening scene with the tank was so fake, it leaves a sour mark on the episode. Any tanker would have used it's firepower from range. It was common for infantry to walk behind a tank to get closer to the objective, but none were.
@@pizzafrenzyman OK, true enough. I guess the tank could have/should have blasted the house by the bridge the Germans ran into with it's main gun. On the other hand, the tank crew couldn't have known the Germans would have a Panzerfaust. Only a TV show.
this whole series was great in its day and I for one appreciate now as back then. No fake heroes or grandstanding from the troops. Too bad it didn't have more years.I watch them over and over.

A paradox, this second episode. The futility of war on the one hand, no doubt about it and yet Sgt. Saunders (Vic Morrow's portrayal) of what leadership really is. The new recruits in the squad do not believe in the war but through dint of watching the squad respecting (albeit not wholeheartedly) Sgt. Saunders and especially, leading by doing what he does not ask others to do they start to catch on. It is interesting to note the difference in the interpretation of this mission between Lieutenant Hanley (Rick Jason) who tries to justify it and Sgt. Saunder's (Vic Morrow) questioning the wisdom (evoking the futility) of it. There is a greater good and the sergeant so well played here by Vic Morrow underlines this paradox. Nothing like COMBAT!(!) - “H MAXH!”, as we called it. The whole kid population of our Greek mountain village would show up every Tuesday afternoon at the sole cafe/general store, to watch it on the sole (black-and-white) Grundig TV set, on the sole government channel. And then...for hours on end, we played ‘Combat!’ ourselves, until long after the sun had dipped behind Mount Parnassus and the gathering dusk obscured the ancient sanctuary of Apollo. Ah, those were the days...
Damn that was poetic andf, y'know, until this very moment and your post it never occurred to me that there were kids in other countries (and some pretty exotic countries, in my view) doing exactly the same thing I was doing, right down to heading out into the dark to spend the last hour or so of the night stalking each other through the tall grass...beautiful. Me too. We used to play Combat in the woods of Ft McClellan Alabama. My Dad at the time was an Army Major (Sanders). Guess who got to play Sgt Saunders during all of our play maneuvers in the woods? He later became a Lt. Col. (we used to get a lot of prank calls for 'buckets of chicken to go late at night). I loved this show and still watch it, better than most anything on the tube today.

Me too .We used to play war game in my town.And US soliders were always good but German ones were always bad and so German Ambassador to Korea often protested this show to Korean government. Because West Germany lent much money for Korea to develop economy at that time ha ha.
I have been re watching Combat the past year or so. Found DVD's at my local library. Started off with the last season, then went to season 1. The one year not in my library system is year two. So very glad to find them here.
Saw the original series back in the 60's. First time I've seen it since. Considering the advances we've seen since they did I super job with this show.
My uncle Albert fell 8n the bulges near Bastogne on january 6 -1945 on de side of the libarators of my country Belguim . Never i go forget what the Americans did for our freedom Thank you to al of you Ronald Duyck
OMG! A Combat! episode were they are not in that woods set, AND there's a tank in it! Amazing. And its got Nick Adams in it, straight after he was with Steve McQueen in Hell is for Heroes. Luckily the German soldiers went to the Stormtrooper school of riflery, lol.
I'm not here to pick holes in anything , I rate this episode as one of the best that I have seen yet . Lots of good action and enough drama to keep the show running well . Damn this is good viewing !
Every single member of the squad has been shot or injured. Just because the Sarg and the Lieutenant never beef it doesn't make it unrealistic in any way. There's some falsehood in the idea a main character always needs to die to be able to suspend disbelief.
n52nimbus - I disagree that there are "always things to criticize". One chooses to look for things to criticize or not to look for it. I have found generally if you are looking for something you're pretty much going to be able to find it - criticism or otherwise.............
@Lysander My dad and his team made it safe back home after WWII when they were in France and in Germany going towards the end of the war. Sure, three or four got wounded, but they went back at it again. When I was a kid in the 60's when I would spend some time at his house (he and my mom were no longer together) he would have some of his guys come over for barbeques, drink All American Beer and talk about what they did during WWII about their missions. Vey horrific what they did to the Nazies and to the Nazi women. He would get upset with me because I heard what they were talking about and what they did. He would tell me to get back inside the house, stay there and watch TV. I am not saying what my dad and his team was wrong. They hated Nazies for what they did.
Like TS-wh4ey says below, this is one of my favorite episodes, right up there with "One more for the road", "The Patrol", The Hill and "What are the bugles blowin' for?" When I was 11 or 12 years old I was a very studious, very polite and very skinny kid who wasn't exactly my fathers favorite, he was a lifer in the Army: Tough as boot-leather, stoic, not much of a talker and...well, he scared the shit out of me. My best bet, I discovered, was to simply stay out of his way, avoid drawing too much attention to myself and never, never, never get in any trouble. The potential problems came when Combat! first came on television and I immediately fell in love with it and whenever I heard the theme music come on I dropped whatever I was doing and headed for the living-room, where, to my great fortune and relief, my dad would be cranking his easy-chair back and getting comfortable because, you see, he enjoyed the hell out of Combat! too. Whatever bonding may have occurred when I was young occurred to the accompanying rattle of Sgt. Saunders Thompson and the chugging of Kirby's BAR and, of course, the return fire that ripped across everything else, the German MG42 and the ubiquitous Schmeisser submachine-gun. My dad was difficult to please and nearly impossible to impress but during the narrow 45 minute window that Combat! afforded me once a week I often managed to do both, naming off the various weapons and their calibers, commenting, occasionally, on tactics or blunders or military protocol while my father grinned or grunted his agreement or simply answered, "Yep". Nobody else in the house, not my brother or my sisters or my mother enjoyed Combat and on the occasion when someone did sit and watch a few minutes my father and I would end up with sneers on our faces, just waiting for them to say something stupid so we could both deride them and run them out of the living-room, away from the black-and-white glowing box that the two of us warmed our hearts in front of like it was an old, stone fireplace. Great times, the 60's, once a week, I'll never forget it and as weird as it sounds, when I hear all those German rounds ricocheting off of whatever cover the squad chose for themselves that episode and when I hear that cracking-sky sound that artillery-rounds made on the show and the perfectly timed and constructed explosions that followed and as the dauntless squad fired-and-maneuvered their way toward the enemy I get a lump in my throat and a melancholy feeling comes over me and I fuckin' miss my dad.

When i was 7 yrs old..i was watch this movie with my father and his friend...and now march 29,2020 as of 5:02 a.m... i watch it now..great film..starring vic morrow
Yay, Kirby finally got the BAR. Thanks for uploading this unparalleled series. Glad they finally dumped Billy and Braddock. The squad, Saunders, Caje, Kirby, Little John and Doc were the best. Always happy to see Hadley on another assignment.
The tank didn't have to get that close to blow the house to hell.Remember being devastated in 68 when Nick Adams died and in 82 when Vic Morrow was killed by sheer neglegence.
I always said believable characters are the #1 factor in making a good move, play, or tv show. The cast of Combat was top shelf. Vic Marrow was exceptional as the squad leader, he never laughs and he's all business. He was an actor I liked a lot. Sure was bummed when he got killed making the Twilight Zone the Movie
@@edwardcochran5060 the only thing Wong with the wardrobe in this series is the lack of unit patches. In ww2 all army & marines wore on it patches. I guess the director thought that putting the Squad in any given unit would restrict storyline in other following episodes.

This unit fough like a special forces group. With the exception of guys like Heller who despised everyone. They were always very tight, everyone of them would take a bullet for each other
I remember watching this in the 80s reruns. To me it was a treat to watch. Later on may not have been an accident that i signed and my brother signed up. I served in a sub, brother in a destroyer.
Never knew combat actually showed a panzerfaust! I was just thinking "The tank wouldn't charge in real life, because the germans would use a ...whoa!" Thanks for the great episode.
If soldiers from both sides would practice a bit of "Kentucky windage" they would be able to pick off one another until they all learned to stay back from the windows.
From about 5:04 to 5:58 "ya don't buy land *ya buy topsoil. Then you haul it into the city and sell it for a dollar a yard." Too funny.* I never hauled topsoil but I hauled buku yards of fill dirt 5/8s crushed rock and recycled asphalt in a 5 yard Chevy C-60 dump truck tractors and a Case backhoe. *Best job I ever had.* We paid 15 dollars a yard for our crushed rock 30 yards a shot. Most of the time there was "no charge."
i remember--somebody picked these actors right. ..they look all different but each is diff like u would really have....and guest stars..close or best show i watched growing uo...the personal stories and real looking scenery...and good sound ..can always hear each talking even with music...wish it was like that now... perfect director whoever?? sargeant perfect. actor...music.. everything... congrats...always wanted family bor and sis like that...better than most,,but not like this brotherhood...loved it... and even great titles for each show..congrats to writers...
I had been reading about those Panzerfaust "bazookas" of the Krauts and the amount of armor they can penetrate. DAMN! Saw that tank rolling up and thought, Why doesn't he stay back and take out those buildings from a distance? What if they have Panzerfausts? Oh No! Too late. Dum-duh-dump-dump (Dragnet theme) and Ker-BLEWIE!

Combat always opens with a great action scenes and this is another exception.
"Bridgehead" is indeed one of the best "Combat!" episodes. Its one of the shows I remembered from viewing the series as a kid, when it first aired.

Nothing like COMBAT!(!) - “H MAXH!”, as we called it. The whole kid population of our Greek mountain village would show up every Tuesday afternoon at the sole cafe/general store, to watch it on the sole (black-and-white) Grundig TV set, on the sole government channel. And then...for hours on end, we played ‘Combat!’ ourselves, until long after the sun had dipped behind Mount Parnassus and the gathering dusk obscured the ancient sanctuary of Apollo. Ah, those were the days...
Damn that was poetic andf, y'know, until this very moment and your post it never occurred to me that there were kids in other countries (and some pretty exotic countries, in my view) doing exactly the same thing I was doing, right down to heading out into the dark to spend the last hour or so of the night stalking each other through the tall grass...beautiful. I use to watch this when I was a kid aged 9, front and center every day, loved it, never missed an episode, Sgt Saunders was my hero.
Me too. We used to play Combat in the woods of Ft McClellan Alabama. My Dad at the time was an Army Major (Sanders). Guess who got to play Sgt Saunders during all of our play maneuvers in the woods? He later became a Lt. Col. (we used to get a lot of prank calls for 'buckets of chicken to go late at night). I loved this show and still watch it, better than most anything on the tube today.

Me too .We used to play war game in my town.And US soliders were always good but German ones were always bad and so German Ambassador to Korea often protested this show to Korean government.
Because West Germany lent much money for Korea to develop economy at that time

I have been re watching Combat the past year or so. Found DVD's at my local library. Started off with the last season, then went to season 1. The one year not in my library system is year two. So very glad to find them here.

OMG! A Combat! episode were they are not in that woods set, AND there's a tank in it! Amazing. And its got Nick Adams in it, straight after he was with Steve McQueen in Hell is for Heroes. Luckily the German soldiers went to the Stormtrooper school of riflery, lol.
I'm not here to pick holes in anything , I rate this episode as one of the best that I have seen yet . Lots of good action and enough drama to keep the show running well . Damn this is good viewing !
Every single member of the squad has been shot or injured. Just because the Sarg and the Lieutenant never beef it doesn't make it unrealistic in any way. There's some falsehood in the idea a main character always needs to die to be able to suspend disbelief.
n52nimbus - I disagree that there are "always things to criticize". One chooses to look for things to criticize or not to look for it. I have found generally if you are looking for something you're pretty much going to be able to find it - criticism or otherwise.............
@Lysander My dad and his team made it safe back home after WWII when they were in France and in Germany going towards the end of the war. Sure, three or four got wounded, but they went back at it again. When I was a kid in the 60's when I would spend some time at his house (he and my mom were no longer together) he would have some of his guys come over for barbeques, drink All American Beer and talk about what they did during WWII about their missions. Vey horrific what they did to the Nazies and to the Nazi women. He would get upset with me because I heard what they were talking about and what they did. He would tell me to get back inside the house, stay there and watch TV. I am not saying what my dad and his team was wrong. They hated Nazies for what they did.

Like TS-wh4ey says below, this is one of my favorite episodes, right up there with "One more for the road", "The Patrol", The Hill and "What are the bugles blowin' for?"
When I was 11 or 12 years old I was a very studious, very polite and very skinny kid who wasn't exactly my fathers favorite, he was a lifer in the Army: Tough as boot-leather, stoic, not much of a talker and...well, he scared the shit out of me. My best bet, I discovered, was to simply stay out of his way, avoid drawing too much attention to myself and never, never, never get in any trouble. The potential problems came when Combat! first came on television and I immediately fell in love with it and whenever I heard the theme music come on I dropped whatever I was doing and headed for the living-room, where, to my great fortune and relief, my dad would be cranking his easy-chair back and getting comfortable because, you see, he enjoyed the hell out of Combat! too.
Whatever bonding may have occurred when I was young occurred to the accompanying rattle of Sgt. Saunders Thompson and the chugging of Kirby's BAR and, of course, the return fire that ripped across everything else, the German MG42 and the ubiquitous Schmeisser submachine-gun. My dad was difficult to please and nearly impossible to impress but during the narrow 45 minute window that Combat! afforded me once a week I often managed to do both, naming off the various weapons and their calibers, commenting, occasionally, on tactics or blunders or military protocol while my father grinned or grunted his agreement or simply answered, "Yep". Nobody else in the house, not my brother or my sisters or my mother enjoyed Combat and on the occasion when someone did sit and watch a few minutes my father and I would end up with sneers on our faces, just waiting for them to say something stupid so we could both deride them and run them out of the living-room, away from the black-and-white glowing box that the two of us warmed our hearts in front of like it was an old, stone fireplace. Great times, the 60's, once a week, I'll never forget it and as weird as it sounds, when I hear all those German rounds ricocheting off of whatever cover the squad chose for themselves that episode and when I hear that cracking-sky sound that artillery-rounds made on the show and the perfectly timed and constructed explosions that followed and as the dauntless squad fired-and-maneuvered their way toward the enemy I get a lump in my throat and a melancholy feeling comes over me and I fuckin' miss my dad.
I enjoyed a lot watching ...RIP Vic Morrow.

We loved Combat! I had a couple of German exchange students friends and you bet your bottom D-Mark they were sat on my sofia every week and never missed an episode.
When i was 7 yrs old..i was watch this movie with my father and his friend...and now march 29,2020 as of 5:02 a.m... i watch it now..great film..starring vic morrow

About half way thru season 1, Braddock went.....Missing in Action.

I always said believable characters are the #1 factor in making a good move, play, or tv show. The cast of Combat was top shelf. Vic Marrow was exceptional as the squad leader, he never laughs and he's all business. He was an actor I liked a lot. Sure was bummed when he got killed making the Twilight Zone the Movie
@@edwardcochran5060 the only thing Wong with the wardrobe in this series is the lack of unit patches. In ww2 all army & marines wore on it patches.
I guess the director thought that putting the Squad in any given unit would restrict storyline in other following episodes.

I remember watching this in the 80s reruns. To me it was a treat to watch. Later on may not have been an accident that i signed and my brother signed up. I served in a sub, brother in a destroyer.
Vic Morrow also served in the Navy in real life.

From about 5:04 to 5:58 "ya don't buy land *ya buy topsoil. Then you haul it into the city and sell it for a dollar a yard." Too funny.* I never hauled topsoil but I hauled buku yards of fill dirt 5/8s crushed rock and recycled asphalt in a 5 yard Chevy C-60 dump truck tractors and a Case backhoe. *Best job I ever had.* We paid 15 dollars a yard for our crushed rock 30 yards a shot. Most of the time there was "no charge."

I had been reading about those Panzerfaust "bazookas" of the Krauts and the amount of armor they can penetrate. DAMN! Saw that tank rolling up and thought, Why doesn't he stay back and take out those buildings from a distance? What if they have Panzerfausts? Oh No! Too late. Dum-duh-dump-dump (Dragnet theme) and Ker-BLEWIE!
