    I love this film!! Forget all of these negative comments, almost every war film ever made has historical inaccuracies. And those films have paid military specialists and historians. My nephew is a filmmaker and I completely respect your comment "I worked with what I had". Everything in a film costs money. I appreciate your passion over your budget. That being said, I see so much more in this film then may have been intended. I don't see a story of two Americans chasing down a German, I see one American seeking revenge on the other. The German soldier is merely a tool for your main characters objective. Then things come full circle and he finds himself in a similar situation as described in your opening dialogue. Karma. Brilliant!

      YES! spot on. I mean spot spot on. Thank you. That is exactly my story. You will notice my protagonists name is Carmanski (Karma). Thank you so very much.

    The two allied soldiers followed the wounded german soldier until they stopped and planned to ambush the german soldier at the barn. When his ally proceeded to the barn to kill the wounded german soldier, he thought his ally got killed by the wounded german soldier because of the gunshots inside the barn.. and then suddenly a man started shooting at him and hid and fired back at the mysterious man which he believed was the wounded german soldier, and so also believed his ally lost to the wounded german soldier.. but after he shot the mysterious man, everything got quiet. And so when someone was getting out of the barn, he saw his ally alive but badly injured and fell on the ground. And so when he was coming to get his ally back he then saw a german soldier behind his back and was shocked, but realizing the event that happended, he realized it was not a german soldier that was shooting at him but his ally instead, was trying to shoot at the german soldier behind his back while trying not to mistakenly shoot at him. This comment is actually for the people who didn't get the film.

      I got it, it was a play on the first fatal shooting by the hedge at the edge of the field, a sort of wrap around to link the end with the beginning. A better story board than most.

    Damn that's a crazy twist. For those that didn't understand, the guy who went into the barn saw a German with a knife sneaking up on his buddy and opened fire, and the other soldier thought he was a German and shot him. So the barn guy comes out and says "I got him" meaning he saved the dude's life, but he thinks it means the guy killed someone in the barn.

    Fantastic attention to detail, from the ill-fitting uniform and awkward clumsy and dishevelled appearance and movement of Nealson to the more self-controlled and disciplined Carmanski is a fantastic juxtaposition. The direction and acting are sublime, not to mention the camera crew and cinematographer. Your awards are well deserved. So glad I found this.

    My father was in the 95th infantry B Co and was first Scout of his squad ( point man) Pattons third army , while pushing thru the French Lorraine the sarge ordered my father and another GI to clear(check for enemy) a small wooden building, It was mostly dark outside and dark inside the building, as soon as they entered the building my father heard a pop and his comrade fell against him and went down, when his helmet rolled off his brains and blood were running out.My father ran back and told the sarge that a sniper killed his comrade . A LT spoke up and told him that he had fired the shot into the building to flush out any possible enemy . They all agreed to write it down as death by sniper fire. To this day any later generations of the dead GI believe that he was killed by an enemy sniper . So , this short movie was an accurate possible scenario, I enjoyed it .

    One German, seems to have foolishly left his gun leaning up against a fence. The gun is spotted. Nielson is sent to cover the left side of the barn while Kaminsky plans to fire at the barn and send anyone inside running out back so Nielson can pick them off. They make enough noise preparing that any German in the barn may already be tipped off. Kaminsky fires at the barn and at no-one in particular hoping to flush out the German he thinks is there. Nielson see no one come out and enters the barn and later spots and fires at the German from inside the barn, a German who is somewhere outside, probably circling around back in the other direction or even somewhere in the building behind Kaminsky, the gunshots sound distant. Now in fact the German may have appeared at the door behind Kaminsky, Neilson spots him and fires back in the direction of Kaminsky. Kamisky thinks that Nielson may be dead and the German is now firing at him from the barn. The German is rather planning to come from behind and kill Nielson armed with only a knife and then probably go after his gun which is still up against the fence. Neilson continues to fire in the direction of Kaminsky but at the German. Kaminsky thinks he is firing back at a German he sees in the barn but he is actually mistakenly firing at his buddy Nielson. Nielson shoots the German behind Kaminsky but he himself has been injured by Kaminsky. Nielson comes out and informs Kaminsky that he got the German then falls over dead. Kaminsky looks back and sees the German dead with his knife out and realized Nielson has saved him. I would wonder why Nielson didn't yell something out but perhaps he is so focused on the German and it happens so quickly he doesn't even realize he is being shot at by Kaminsky. Kaminsky is left to ponder that he also screwed up, didn't watch his back, didn't shut the door behind, didn't clear the room behind, allowed too much noise setting up and moving Nielson into position, gave a way position while trying to flush someone out who he didn't know was even there, din't identify his target, and in the end shot his only friend in a hostile warzone. It's the Fog of war is it not.

    This was really well done. I love the "stay in formation" conversation, with the camera focusing back and forth between the subjects faces as the are talking. The acting was good, uniforms and makeup looked very real in tight-close shots, shots that normally reveal any inadequacies. I understand without an unlimited budget it's nearly impossible to wind up without modern horse trailers and grain silos in the background, and I can look past that. For me the only disappointment came after the M1 Garand rapid fired 8 rounds (twice) in succession, without hearing or seeing the enbloc being ejected along with the iconic and signature "ping" sound it makes. I've grown so accustomed to hearing it through movies like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, etc. that I find myself counting the rounds and waiting for the ping every time I see a clip of a US WW2 soldier firing an M1. Great job through, awesome bodycam work throughout!

      @@KarlRyanErikson You did such a good job on this, (watched it a few more times) I notice more details that collectively make this such a great film. Right from the opening scene, the leaves in the trees blowing in the wind and the way the camera takes you through the first 30 seconds.. well you nailed it. Usually it would have been handled with a series of 'talking head' , camera-1, camera-2 shots. I am certain that I am not alone in really hoping that you pursue some more WW2 films like this.

    Subtext Subtext Subtext!! What a powerful story. I was watching your other film Freeman Velocity, which is outstanding, and it took me here to this beautiful movie. There are some issues, but you seem to know what they are. And who cares? It's a small film with a big message. Congratulations. I love how you start off the film with the wide flowing scenes and slowly get tighter and tighter on your main actor and the camera gets shaky. Very claustrophobic feeling. Someone needs to get you a bigger budget and let you run with your talent.

    I don't think even any rookie in the 101st 'Screaming Eagles' would have been that jumpy or gone into direct combat without securing his helmet. Although this was their first action (D-Day onwards) they had serious preparation and training, and the first wave over there were the best of the best.

      Just about every war film has a character like Nealson. Quick examples are Albert Blithe in BOB or Corporal Upham in SPR . It's what helps to build some tension. Besides theatrical films we also see and/or hear about this "jumpiness" in men in war documentaries and in interviews.

    Hi Karl, I was impressed by your production - I was a film student (college) in the seventies where I learned the "mechanics" of making a movie - which gave me utmost respect for all the work involved (We had to rotate between all the main player roles of a film production). I thought that it was easy, it is not. Your short film touched me deeply - I am a Veteran, I have lived this confusion, the "fog of war" as it is called. Our greatest fear was "blue on blue", that is fratricide where in the confusion of combat you shoot/blast/torpedo one of your own... Thank you for this very moving work of art - may Peace be with you, keep on the great work... Ciao, L (Veteran, 3 wars)

    • @KarlRyanErikson
      @KarlRyanErikson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm really glad this touched you. Though it is set in WW2 this film was inspired by my fathers experience during Vietnam (If I got this correct - He was Sp4, Co. A, 2nd Bn., 27th Inf. 65'-66') . In short, he said they rarely saw the enemy and would fire into the jungle until the jungle stopped firing back. That's some scary sh*t. If you notice with the cinematography, not only was my goal to start wide and push in as the men's fate grew nearer, but I also decided to never give the audience anymore information than what the men had. thank you for the nice comments and thank you for your service!

    Pretty cool, several tactic/equipment inaccuracies, especially the non-ping from the enbloc clip after each 8th round, but not bad acting, and super cool ending twist. Don't enders and why he wouldn't just yell "you behind you with a knife", or "you dipshit, your shooting at me lol, but still very cool, reminded of something out of an old sgt. Rock, or G.I combat comic book.

    Very well made. Great Camara work and editing. Acting was good. Story was realistic. Only critic is, in such a situation at the end, once the shooting starts, so does the shouting. Best seen so far.

    A very very good effort. Yes, there were no airborne troops in France in 1944. Yes, they should've had helmet nets. That being said, when you consider all the elements that are required to write, cast, produce, costume and direct even a short film, the accomplishment here is something to be proud of. Credit where it's due. And by the way Colton, I don't see anybody criticizing your spelling, buddy.
