I took my family to a Master's five concert in Lynden, Washington back in the 80's. My youngest daughter was about four years old then, and I took her to JD Sumner to meet him. My daughter had her doll with her and I told JD Sumner that she wanted to meet him. The first words out of JD's mouth was hi, dolly. It made such an impression on my daughter when we returned to our seats, she had to tell me that man said hello dolly. She still remembers that to this day.
What an amazing tribute to JD Sumner and to see all those familiar faces, performers and legends. I live in Australia but know of all these singers thanks to Elvis. Elvis made sure these great people like JD were heard all over the world. We got to realise that JD was a legend in his own right. RIP JD.
JD is why I started singing bass. I worked hard, and I got down to G1 but that's as low as I can get. JD's voice will never be matched, and certainly never replaced.
I grew up listening to the Gaithers and old gospel music. It wasnt until I guess my 40's that I was blessed to hear stories from these classic gospel singers. And J.D always ministered to me when he would sing or tell a story. Probably because his testimony and mine are so much alike. I'm 60 yrs old now. The older I get the more I appreciate what Bill Gaither has done in bringing all thise folks together and allowing each of us to be a part of their family at least musically from watching all if the great shows and gatherings of the Gaither "family".
I'm now 86 and am pretty much unable to get around, but I have been very sctive in keeping up with music, as I sang a great deal and miss having the opportunity/ability to do so these days. 🎉

15:58 I had the honor to know him. I was in a small town group. We had the privilege to open up for JD and the stamps when they were in the area for about three years. He was witty. He was a genuine person. I felt honored to call him my friend. I had some good conversations on the bus with him. I remember when that song came out. He sent us a copy before it came out. I miss him but will see him again in heaven.
Watching this, I find it amazing how many of these great performers have also gone on to be with JD and the Lord: George Younce, Hovie Lister, Jim Hamell, Howard & Vestal Goodman, Eva Mae Lefevre, Rex Nelon, Mary Tom Speer, Anthony Burger and more. We've been really blessed with some glorious performers over the years, and I have nothing but gratitude for their impact on my life.
seamus1956 I came late to finding all these wonderfully anointed singers. And to find them on TH-cam... as a free resource of music and worship...in the few short years I have been playing these videos on repeat, I feel I have come to be a part of this wonderful family. Such a blessing. So many have gone home...I sure hope we all get to join them soon...when Jesus calls us all home! 😇
Wow!! They have died too??!! Oh my.. I grew up watching these folks on TV in Jamiaca ... they have encouraged me (through their songs) greatly in my Christian walk.
Yes, and I'm so honored to have known them all! Wonderful entertainers, true Christians & God-given talent! Without the Speer Family, most of Southern Gospel music wouldn't have existed! 🤗❤️
Not only was he the best bass singer to ever live, he was a great man too.He bought joy and laughter to those around him, people like him don't come around often. To all those he knew, they are truly blessed to have know such a great man Rest In Peace JD Sumner, you are my idol I hope to be like you not only in singing bass but as a man too.
Love this more these days, as my body gets older and I know my Lord will call me home before too many more years......however long it is, i will be thrilled to meet my Savior face to face.🎉
J D and his group were at a mall singing one night and I just happened in the mall after visiting my daughter who we had visited at a mental hospital. So discouraged and really down I heard J D sing What a Friend We Have in Jesus. It reminded me that I had someone I could tell all my hurts and pains to and Jesus understands. Loved J D and look forward to seeing him in heaven.

What a beautiful tribute to J.D. Sumner of the man he is ! To be surrounded by so many people who loved and respected him so, is a testimony in itself. Did know about this man only that he sang with Elvis, but seeing this video gave me enough to know him. I loved when asked, when JD helped a prisoner out early to be with his family , what did he do to go to prison? and JD replied " why, does it make any difference!" Now that alone said what kind of man JD was. ! May he Rest In Peace
Rest In Peace JD Sumner. I wish I could of met you. You are so Loved and so missed. Until we all meet again. God Bless! Oh Lord I just heard JD with Elvis. WOW I never knew...

I had the honor of meeting him back in the late 80's. He was such a sweet and Godly man. I talked with him for awhile during a break for the singing. He showed me his TLC ring that he was given to him by Elvis. He told me of his time with Elvis. He was a good man and is missed here, but can't you just hear that angel Choir?

I love JD I was able to meet him and we were instant friends invited me to come to the singing. I said I’ve always loved your voice I always imagine God sounding that way, he looked at me and said well that’s the best compliment I’ve ever gotten. I was about 19 years old. It was a wonderful visit and I was tickled to sit down with my parents and talk with him and Ed Enoch.

I truly Love that man with all my heart, he was one of my hero next to Elvis Presley. I cried watching this video, I'm gonna miss him dearly. May the Giant of a man rest in peace and continue on singing with Elvis Presley in Heaven. Love you brother J.D.
That's the real legend because he spent his life singing for God. I love J.D he voice motivates me to sing in bass. May your soul rests in peace soon we will be together singing in choir in the kingdom of God
JD was at our little church (Wesleyan ) in Carson City, NV in 2004 or so....what a JOY....he had on red socks!! Such a dear man I am so looking forward to seeing aging and hugging his neck!!!! And, oh the singing for Eternity!!!
Thank you so much for posting this tribute! J.D. @ 10:00 singing solo “God Still Lives in This Old House” at the end of his legendary career is one of the most touching performances I’ve watched in my many years of listening to Southern gospel music. Epic! And a tip of the hat and thanks to Bill Gaither for chronicling all of this music history and making it available to us.
Since I first met him at the age of 5 when Daddy had The Blackwood Brothers come sing at our church in NC, I was "in love" with that giant of a man & his incredible bass voice. Soon as I was old enough to order my own subscription of "The Singing News" I made sure I went to see J.D. & the Stamps anywhere within a few hrs from home. He & I became good friends. After a few more yrs he told me on his tour bus before a big concert: "Now Honey you're just like one of my own kids, so you just need to call me "Big Daddy!" I was thrilled. The yrs passed. I became a married Lady with a little girl. J.D. would still send Ed Hill or someone to find me & visit him on the bus. I was always thrilled to have the privilege! It was similar to getting an audience with the Pope! I'd approach his special comfy chair, reach over to give him a hug, & he would say, "Come sit on my lap & tell Big Daddy what's new in your life." Up until the last time my friends & I saw him perform live, the routine stayed the same. Go up into the bus, sit on the great man's lap & catch up on the news. When nobody else was within earshot, I asked if he wasnt feeling well. He put his head on my shoulder awhile, held me tight, then looked up with tears in his eyes. My heart broke. "I'll be alright: Dont you worry." He had dubbed our group of "girls" his 'Stampettes" & always wanted us on the front row (he'd have it roped off for us). That night during the American Trilogy he stared down at each of us. Then during the "bridge" piece, he sang it this way: "Hush, little baby, dont you cry, you know BIG DADDY IS BOUND TO DIE....We were a wreck. Near the end of the concert he talked about "going home." As was customary, before eceryone became uoset, he said "And when I die none of you girls are allowed at my funeral. All that crying will just mess things up & you'll look like a bunch of racoons!" When that dreadful news reached us all very quickly, each of us were calling the other. "Do we pack a bag & make a roadtrip or not?" Jennie reminded us of what he said 2 months before. We honored his wishes & grieved in our own ways. There will never be a more talented, loving, benevolent or funny man in this world who could begin to measure up to his legacy. I miss him every day. I also miss his beautiful Mary. This post is lengthy & I apologize. There are so many stories I'd love to share. Instead, I Thank God that I was fortunate enough to have known the 'real' John Daniel Sumner. His passing left a deep hole in many hearts. I'm glad we have the Assurance that one day, we all will be together again. ♡

Elvis had a very large band backing him up, as well as, harmony singers, a girl group and of course, JD and The Stamps, as well as a frenzied crowd, but when JD cut loose on one of his patented low runs, he could be heard loud and clear. His friendship with SGM other superstar, Jake Hess, was legendary. I miss them both.

Being a legend isnt an easy job. i know, im sort of a legend in my profession. But seing JD and all the legends listening to him is an honor. when they can tell stories without end is a testomony to your status. JD, you are awesome.
JD Sumner, the greatest bass singer in the world, loved of all of us who loved Music and especially loved and admired of the King himself, Elvis Presley and Elvis envied JDæ's low notes. I love Elvis and I sure love JD

I met JD twice, once when I was 19 and heard the Blackwoods for the first time. I sought him out after the concert to autograph an album and the second time with the Stamps and I told him about the first time and he remembered the concert in Winnipeg many years before. Have always been a fan and love his testimony song.
Special to hear the story behind this man. With the Gaither’s you could pick up that beautiful tone resonate from his voice. You could see in clips of Elvis he loved JD.

I am 78 and remember ( probably 1968 ) 😊 when he stepped out on stage and introduced each of the other members then in his deep voice said , “ And you all know who I am “
Mike Preston.Brisbane Australia. I first met JD at the Riverside Casino . We were doing a show with Charlie Hodge and Gary Wayne Bridges. I helped him off his stand every night and every night he thanked me. A great gentleman.
Dieu est si bon... Il nous envoie des fleurs des oiseaux ...il utilise des gens formidables... Merci dieu Je chante des airs d opéras......et pourtant et pourtant je me sens si bien en écoutant ce groupe charismatique. Merci dieu
I met J.D. when he was with the Masters Five, at a concert in Claremore, Oklahoma. (1982?) Steve Warren was subbing for the ailing Tenor, and he liked the chimes on my drum set there....so he offered to buy them. I put him off a few times, but then he made an offer I would be nuts to refuse, so I sold them. We decided to go to Burger King (only thing open that late in small town on weeknight), and as we all walked in the door and stepped to the counter....the girl was turned and chatting with another girl in the back.....J.D. grabbed the microphone on the cash register. It was on a flexible holder, and he just rotated it to himself and almost swallowed it as he said, "Hey, little girl..." in his deepest growl....and she almo1st jumped up onto the stainless steel counter! The look on her face was priceless! We had burgers/fries, and listened to J.D. tell stories..... 😄
I was blessed to be able to attend two Master’s Five concerts in Lubbock, two years in a row (I think). My parents and I were among those who got to meet J.D., Jake, James, Howie, and Rosie, and get their autographs on their album cover. I still have those albums. I wonder now if a then-unknown Larry Gatlin was in the audience for those concerts.

In December 1976, Elvis appeared at the BJCC, the only time he appeared in Birmingham, AL before his death. My friends and I had dinner at the Hyatt Regency adjacent to the Civic Center. When we walked through the lobby, to go to the Civic Center, there were numerous quartet members standing talking to JD. I walked up and said JD, you wouldn't know this was an Elvis concert. Looks more like a gospel singing. He looked at me, grinned, and said, baby, it's more like a convention and Elvis would love it.

Elvis and J.D. What a combination! I met JD at the Graceland Gates once and asked if I could take a picture of his right hand which was against the gates. JD said sure and I got a great shot of a huge ring that he was wearing. He probably got it from Elvis??? This was in 1976. I loved that song JD sang toward the end. His voice is chilling.
, at 1 point i got a collector's item cd recording of studio sessions with them & elvis; at 1 point j.d. started going to his lowest vocally & elvis could be heard on the background joking, 'show off' :-)
Bless J.D.'s heart. I bet he's just a shouting in Heaven right now. You can tell in the song he sang that he dedicated to his brother, he was tired and ready to go.
My late husband and myself had the honor of meeting JD Sumner when we lived in Greenville SC. JD was my late husband's favorite singer. Now my late husband and JD can sit and talk all the time.
I am saved and know Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. Lance Sheplar, yea it does seem like that, the world wasn’t as bad as it is now in my opinion but God is working through all the bad!
I am a lucky one to have met JD about 30 years ago (with I think the Dixie Melody Boys? Lord it’s been so long); I just remember I was only 7 or 8 & didn’t know hardly anything about him (I didn’t know he sang with Elvis til ten years after that!)-i only knew that I loved his voice and how he reminded me of my Grampy, whose mind was already startin to go at that point, and by golly I just wanted his autograph! He not only made me laugh, but I was just an itty bitty, overlookable thing back then in a sea of adults, yet he made it an point to make me feel important during that *less than three or so minutes*…

Such a humble man. Cried like a baby watching this.

JD was one of the classiest bass singers that Southern Gospel had to offer!
@Jerry Butler. One of the greatest bass singers. On the other hand the little girl who does our high voice singing Kathy Westmoreland.
Thank you Kathy
I met JD twice, once when I was 19 and heard the Blackwoods for the first time. I sought him out after the concert to autograph an album and the second time with the Stamps and I told him about the first time and he remembered the concert in Winnipeg many years before. Have always been a fan and love his testimony song.
Special to hear the story behind this man. With the Gaither’s you could pick up that beautiful tone resonate from his voice. You could see in clips of Elvis he loved JD.
Thank you for honoring one of my favorites as a teenager! I'll see him, in person, one day!
God blessed JD with an awesome voice. I love bass singers and he was the best.

Mike Preston.Brisbane Australia. I first met JD at the Riverside Casino . We were doing a show with Charlie Hodge and Gary Wayne Bridges. I helped him off his stand every night and every

I doubt it. Unless he devil allows gospel in hell, I don’t think a drug addict and a racist are singing together.
He can still move me to tears, May God Bless.
such a beautiful song..thank you

This was so lovely and beautiful. I had seen JD on some of your other videos, but I didn't know his name. Thank you. Bev in Maine
I met J.D. when he was with the Masters Five, at a concert in Claremore, Oklahoma. 😄

J.D. SUMNER., uma das vozes mais significativas do gospel music. maneco - Porto Alegre-RS - Brasil.

I wish there was a website for all the people that passed from all the shows I've been curious for a few years now even trying to get on their website in general there was nothing about it I wish I could find a book or something that has these people that had passed away from their shoes

Amazing. Wonderful ❤ ,,🙏
He looked at me, grinned, and said, baby, it's more like a convention and Elvis would love it.

we love you and miss you JD, You will never be forgotten. god's gain is our loss
His voice is chilling.
yes, Elvis did give him that ring
, at 1 point i got a collector's item cd recording of studio sessions with them & elvis; at 1 point j.d. started going to his lowest vocally & elvis could be heard on the background joking, 'show off' :-)
JD Summer, a marvelous singer, greatly missed

Hello
Like old home week - heard him and the others at the Ben Hill County/Fitzgerald singing convention in the 40's and 50's. Miss them like family.
I'd bet Elvis would've had some great stories about J.D.
yes
Hope when I kick the bucket my family and friends have these kind of memories about my life
john tabler 😂when you kick the bucket😂!
Thank you for making me laugh stress away uncontrollably!
God bls you!😂!
You can see the desperation and sadness in George's eyes when he laughs...
Bless J.D.'s heart. I bet he's just a shouting in Heaven right now. You can tell in the song he sang that he dedicated to his brother, he was tired and ready to go.
I see Rex Nelon in this clip too and it made me cry miss him too very much.
I CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU IN HEAVEN J.D.!
My late husband and myself had the honor of meeting JD Sumner when we lived in Greenville SC. JD was my late husband's favorite singer. Now my late husband and JD can sit and talk all the time.
What a wonderful tribute to a Godly man.
I was born in the wrong era, wish I could have met him
be sure you know3 Jesus so you can in Heaven!!!
I am saved and know Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. Lance Sheplar, yea it does seem like that, the world wasn’t as bad as it is now in my opinion but God is working through all the bad!
Lance Shepler wow man, I hope it all goes well for you. Are you wanting to get back to Christianity? I’ll be praying for you Lance.
Lance Shepler I will definetly pray for you. Are you having trouble forgiving yourself? I’ll pray for ya
I just learned this. RIP JD.
I met him when they came out in san diego ca i love him god bless you jd rip cant see you again in heaven
He.was a great singer.
