Elvis played my hometown,Austin Texas, for the last time on March 28th 1977.My nextdoor neighbor went to the concert, and she said when J.D. hit those low bass notes, the whole auditorium they were in shook/vibrated!
I love JD Sumner's singing and respect him even more for "bearing his soul" in this "interview." I did not know he is a RECOVERED alcoholic. His achievements and talent far outweigh this sad part of his life and I will always think fondly and kindly of him. He is now in Glory - a much better place !!!
Nobody is perfect, we all have imperfections, judgement of others is ugly and what I’ve heard so far makes my stomach turn. Elvis gave so much to people and his legacy will live on forever. I know this is a talk show, however I’ve heard enough talk. RIP ELVIS ❤️
I actually knew these people. J D Sumner and the Stamps along with Elvis. I’ve been to Elvis’s home. My siblings and I were very young and we went to hear them sing. They noticed that we were there and had us up to sing. We just set when J D said well I hear that we have some kids who can sing. We just keep setting. He finally called us out by our last name and we got up, walked on stage and I was young but I turned to the piano player and ask if he could play by ear. He said yes, kick it off and I’ll catch it. We did. What a fun night. That was way back in 1970.52 years ago.
Que vozarron de este señor maravilloso. No por nada Elvis Presley siempre lo tuvo en su equipo. Elvis un maravilloso genio y este hombre fue su complemento divino.
Food for thought ...... I met JD back in 1993 when I was selling concert tickets for JD, and the Stamps, I know he lived Elvis very much......I don't believe Elvis would object to any of the conversations here...as where ever Elvis is now if he knows what is going on he would not want other people to end up like he did...Elvis cared about people...he loved his fans...he was a "people oriented person" ...I believe Elvis would say...if others can benefit from my mistakes, and be saved from drugs by listing to what actually happened to me in my addiction...then maybe some will come from my suffering RIP Elvis we all love and miss you.

JD’s point was each person has to get to their “bottom” not that everyone has to get into the gutter or thrown in prison, but each person has their bottom.
i was a reporter. interviewed JD Sumner in Meridian, Mississippi. I asked JD about performing with Elvis in Las Vegas. He said it was the best time ever - great life, great money, great music. My cameraman piped in, "Wow, Mr. Sumner - Why would you leave a job like that?" JD looked at him quizzically and said, "Well, son - he died!"
yup...and he managed to function on stage just like Elvis....only difference was he wasn't in the spotlight. And also, let's get real here for a minute....I don't care who u are, but when celebs become big, they use SOMETHING, legal or not because it's just not a normal lifestyle. And the biggest of them all, Elvis, was still human, a human doing his best to keep giving everyone the "image" EVERY NITE. At the end, his body could take no more.
I love JD and I don’t like some peoples attitude they have when speaking with him. Everybody has to hit rock bottom before they can come back up! Some people are just too proud to admit their own rock bottom so that they look a little better to others than some. I have no respect for those people. Tell it like it is! About 3 years before JD Sumner's death, I got him and Ed Enoch to sign an old 33 album of the Stamps. Ed was gracious about it and even joked about their early 70s wardrobe and haircuts, but JD was hesitant. I almost took the album back then he agreed to sign it. I felt bad because his hand shook so badly while he tried to autograph it. I don't know if he was still drinking then or why his right hand trembled so badly but I thanked him profusely because I realized the effort it took.
Maybe he had Parkinson’s disease? It causes tremors. Don’t jump to conclusions about him drinking. My husband has tremors from Parkinson’s disease. Not very kind to say something like that about JD?
Gosh, Jeanne Cooper is SO ANNOYING! This just proves how good of a sport J.D. Sumner was; nobody else would have ever tolerated her disrespecting one of the most honest, prolific gospel singers alive.
Deep down many people love to hear when famous people Are addicted, because then their own life and non-talents doesn't seem so bad after all. But no matter what, a guy like Elvis outshine us all in What he gave the would of himself, the kindness he showed strangers and the talent he had. In short, he was a better person than most of us, so WTF if he took uppers and downers, to me he is still The King (Even though he allways insisted on giving that titel to other performers or Jesus ).
JD will always be the man! He sang with Elvis! And created the stamps.,. God knows… he has a story don’t interrupt him…Jeannie Cooper knows there are different bottoms for everyone… her rock bottom is different then his.

Geraldo just loves failure he thrives on your dirty laundry. JD is telling his personal side of the story Never judge a person unless you have walked in their shoes. RIP JD sumner
Geraldo, and I think he had a thing to humilate Elvis. Totally forgeting he had bone cancer in which would have very painful in his last 3-4 years of his life. Stop putting Evis down People. The man gave away a lot of his fortune too. R.I.P let him rest.
My step dad was like that when. it came to drinking alcohol , we couldn't tell that he was drinking . I think it had something to do with the body builds up a tolerance for it . I could drink two beers and I'm out . I never have cared for alcohol . I grew up in it all of my life around alcoholics and some drug addicts and swear that my kids wouldn't grow up around it and they didn't .
I might add here that not all gospel 'singers' were or are necessarily Christians. This is NOT a put down. I love J.D's singing and he was a FINE man, and a wonderful Christian in the latter part of his life. But he would have admitted himself that he was not ALWAYS a Christian - he was a singer, who sang gospel songs. Many stars use it as a throwaway line - "Thank God for this award.." when they don't necessarily mean it literally.
These fellows keep interrupting JD but he is wise in that he does not interrupt them back. He was a good listener and able to go back to his trail of thought after an interrupt. Another thing is that he takes responsibility for his drinking. 🇰🇪
I seriously cannot stomach Geraldo!!!! Why is EVERYONE ALWAYS trying to make Elvis out to be a drug addicted slob? JD tried to set them straight, but the interruptions never ended! 😤
Having JD Sumner and McKenzie Philips sitting next to each other in a talkshow about addiction is probably one of the most unexpected things for me to find on youtube.

J.D.'s book was the only one I have ever read of a gospel singer that had a ring of truth. Not picking on gospel singers because if they tell the truth their carreer is over, but JD told it warts and all, to a degree
My Mom and I met JD after a concert one night. He did not seem drunk at all!! He did ask my Mom if she wanted to go to Elvis’s hotel room?!? She didn’t say anything for a long time, but I said WHAT?!! My mouth was wide open, my Dad was there so yeah didn’t happen. My Mom threw up !! Hahahahaha
I find Geraldo's attempts at comedy, when he refers to Elvis' personal struggles, very pathetic. I've been listening to Elvis' music for the first time ever over the last 6 months and now I can see how much he contributed to the world with his Gospel music.
I agree completely, Geraldo phases his questions to elicit cheap laughs at the expense of Elvis. The good news is Geraldo is a faded distant memory, and Elvis is as big as ever, and his legacy grows each year, and Geraldo? who is he? people will ask.
deek rivers Actually people will remember Geraldo. He’s the one who made a humiliating spectacle of himself in the mid 1980’s by going inside Al Capones vault finding on live tv. 😂🤣😂🤣
His voice actually never changed by drinking, it just helped him sing lower easier. His voice deepened has he aged. In a homecoming video JD was getting surgery on his vocal cords and the doctor told him he had the longest vocal cords in medical history (longer your vocal cords deeper your voice which meant he probably has the deepest SPEAKING voice a human can possibly achieve). JD said the doctor was gonna measure his vocal cords but forgot to.
Exactly, and that C2 was pretty stout! The next pitch a half step lower on the staff would be a B1 and I'm pretty sure she had that pitch and then some! Hahaha!
Mackenzie Phillips talks like it's something highly unusual for folks to have a PDR, and even MORE so to get a brand new edition every year. The reality is that virtually everyone who works in the field of medicine and mental health owns a PDR, and many artists who use/abuse drugs also have a PDR! Furthermore, the company that produces this essential manual has a long standing policy that if you mail in your old PDR to the company at the end of the year they will automatically mail you a brand new edition for the coming year at little or no cost. Who WOULDN'T take advantage of such a deal?
Rock bottom is the grave, I had 20 year heroin habit, was able to kick and stay clean BC I got engaged to my dreamgirl.she abdicated bout 5 years, I asked 3x,first 2 no,3 rd yes. I was functioning, she knew, dabbled but got scared after an overdose where she needed CPR,etc. I didn't,it was so scary,I cried BC if she passed,I would have shot myself right then.
We are all addicts and some way so what gives you the right to say their attics we don't know what's behind their story railing but the seller just throw you got to add in lies Elvis was no different from any other man
Theirs no such thing as a high bottom and their is not different levels of bottom. What a ridiculous assesment of someone like JD that overcame his drinking problem. How about just loving someone where they are at and just let love impact there decision instead of judging them , I seriously don't think Geraldo would have wanted his life away from behind the TV camera exposed. This episode would have been more effective if the arrogant host would have just let JD and the young lady tell others who May be struggling with addiction that they can overcome it.
That was rude. LET THE MAN FREAKIN TALK OPENLY ABOUT HIS PROBLEM!!!! He was probably about to give his testimony to how he came to Christ through his problem.
Elvis played my hometown,Austin Texas, for the last time on March 28th 1977.My nextdoor neighbor went to the concert, and she said when J.D. hit those low bass notes, the whole auditorium they were in shook/vibrated!

Addiction is so sad!
Shoulda let JD y’all more
Mackenzie Phillips talks like it's something highly unusual for folks to have a PDR, and even MORE so to get a brand new edition every year.
SInging gospel music does not make one a Christian.Obedience to Christ does. (Matt. 7:21)
Roger Leonard only god knew Elvis a jd heart. only god had the power to judge them. in my opinion both are back together w god in heaven.
Do not judge lest you are judged by the one who counts
@@candihoffman2451 Read all of Matthew 7:1-5 & John 7:24. You aree misrepresenting God's word when you only give part of fuller teaching. :)
My god. 2/5ths of 5% ABV cider and I'm drunk, but 40% whisky?
Jeanne Cooper has a lower speaking voice than I do! Sure, I'm a tenor but still! I speak at around D3-C4, she speaks at like A2-E3.
We are all addicts and some way so what gives you the right to say their attics we don't know what's behind their story railing but the seller just throw you got to add in lies Elvis was no different from any other man
J D Sumner love real Elvis Aaron Presley Jr West Plains back Civic Center love God of a Ghost family
He was probably about to give his testimony to how he came to Christ through his problem.
i AGREE with the priest
3:40 what a dude 😂 3:51
