I remember seeing the A10 for the very first time right when they first came out. As a crash/rescue firefighter/paramedic at my USAF base IN THE MID 70’s, we had to do what we called pre-fire plans on all aircraft and buildings. So when the A10 arrived and parked on the tarmac the Chief arranged for us to go see and climb all over it.
We were used to close air/ground support aircraft like the A10 but they were really just small little A37’s, about the size and shape of a squashed volkswagen with wings, so I expected just an updated version of them.
When we got out on the ramp, the aircraft there was huge! I couldn’t jump and touch the wings and you could almost stand up in one of those humongous jet intakes! Not only that, but the 7 barreled GAU 30mm canon just looks fearsome sticking out the front. It actually goes almost all the way thru the fuselage too.
The pilot made sure the gun and radar were safe and off, then we got to learn all about that plane.
Sure was fun and I’ll never forget it! Only the SR71 ever captured my attn as much and the A10 provided a much needed respite from only seeing B52’s all the time. Thanks for the great video.
Well apparently it was first used in 1974 the year I graduated from Richmond Hill High School, Queens, NYC. An now it is 2021. I wonder if the next type will be called the A11 or will it be called the AGA fying disc. Anti Gravity Attack flying saucer.

I went into the Air Force in 78', and was introduced to the flying tank.
When I was on active duty with the Air Force, I served with the Tactical Air Command and the A-10 was the plane where. I was based. An incredible ground forces support plane. I also served in SAC, at Anderson AFB, where the B-52s were used to bomb Hanoi and with MAC at Dover AFB, where we had the C-5 aircraft. I only had an opportunity to see these aircraft taking off and landing, but each were impressive aircraft in their own way.

I was stationed at Sembach in the early 80's did tda's at Ahlhorn twice. Amazing aircraft.
I was stationed @ the 'Bach from 8/71 to 8/73 as a USAF Security Policeman, LE, K-9 and Site Security. We were the home of the 2nd MOB, 601st Air Base Wing, and had a permanent Army detachment with Hueys, Loches and Cobras. At the end of our runways heading for Sembach village, there was a French Tank training ground that the Army helos used, to play war games in with the French. What was a real treat was when the F-4s from Ramstein would come to play with the tanks, in a close-air support role. A couple of times we when we were off duty, we went and watched the games from a hillside. Pretty cool, I thought. I can only imagine the ass-kicking the Warthogs brought to those games. I envy you your experiences there with them.
One of the fondest memories of my life was sitting on a road near just off the runway at the Hagerstown, Maryland airport where they were made (Fairchild Republic) and watching them do touch and go's. Gave me the impetus to go and get my pilots license. Unfortunately, the Cessna 152 I learned in didn't have the big cannon in the front.

One of my favorite all time planes! THE WARTHOG!!! Basically a flying tank with really good maneuverability! Love to see them take down Russian tanks as they were designed to do during the Cold War!
Not sure if they would perform well in today's modern air defenses! But she'll always have a place in my Aviation heart!

What I love about the A-10 is the fact that the politicos/military-industrial complex have been chopping at the bit for years to get a replacement in the pipeline to NO avail! This plane is just too good and with updates is still a huge component of the US defense.

This plane comes from a great tradition of fighter- the P-47 Thunderbolt. Both big, tough, bad-ass fighters.

A year and half ago I was watching my parent's house and as I walked down the driveway three A-10s flew directly at me. They were only about 500 feet off the ground. I was literally looking down the barrels of a Gatling Gun. Even though I knew exactly what was coming at me it still startled the living daylights out of me. Imagine the enemy.

я бы так не сказал, что А-10 , самый мощный! Шестистволка "Вулкан" - это еще не панацея от всех бед. этого "козыря" недостаточно... чтобы считаться самым мощным! Статистика показывает, потери у них были, и очень немалые - открытые двигатели, очень капризная система гидравлики... ; далее, очень яркая тепловая сигнатура - радость для системы теплового наведения ракет "воздух-воздух"! Или если это "сделано в штатах", то сразу вешается ярлычок - необсуждаемого "шедевра" -)))
А какой самый мощный? Неужели СУ-25? Я уверен абсолютно, что А-10 легендарная машина, прошедшая все мыслимые и немыслимые конфликты и лучший штурмовик мира, а панацеи, уважаемый, нет от ничего, сравнивать надо эффективность в боевых условиях а А-10, никого нет равных.

I always get a laugh at the pilot walk around. I was a Crew Chef on F153 at Langley and the pilots would come out walk around grab a pilon and shake it, touch the plane here and there. The pilots and the Crew Chiefs had a bond. For the 4 years I was at Langley the tail number on MY F15 was 4125 and my pilot was Capt. Dale Cook who went on to fly for the Thunderbirds then flew commercial air liners. Anyway, even though some frowned on fraternization between the enlisted and officers but we would all get together on a Friday and have a great time. I miss those days.
