    I majored in early medieval European history in college. Wagons are one of those things that played a huge part in everyday life, even in the military, but you don't really read about at all. I'd totally watch a series on wagons.

    • @EmpyreanLightASMR
      @EmpyreanLightASMR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I just googled and they're called wagon seat leaf springs, patented in 1804 (leaf springs, at any rate). So did medieval wagons not have springs then? I'm also curious about the iron around the wheel.

      Its always the specific courses in history classes that have the most bizarre readings.
      Took a history class on early environmentalism, one of the topics sorta leading into it was the very early cattle ranchers, and how they were able to steal land by claiming one of their cattle would be killed or be found on native american land and inform the government.
      Also the wagon leading Americans westward.

    • @EmpyreanLightASMR
      @EmpyreanLightASMR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@oAPXo I forgot about this thread. I should addend my first reply, leaf springs were around centuries more than the 1804 patent. I think I read wagons did have some form of spring or other in the 17th century, maybe earlier.

      I thought this was a new segment because of the video quality. It's still as good though. Because most of us had to use Zoom and stuff, seeing your favorite celebrities in Lofi is kinda comforting in a way.

      Yeah, I was almost impressed at how awful the old ones were 😆 were they recording with a microwave? I will say it does kinda put more pressure on celebrities to dress up and wear more makeup 😛 I think the original setup was simply more casual, but a bit silly considering how huge a star Conan is. We all know how expensive some podcast studios can be, people with a lot less talent and fans operating a much snazzier studio.

      There's a really cool little wagon and stagecoach museum in Cedar City, Utah. When driving through on I-15, I visited the museum at least once, I think maybe twice. I love all the different types. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe it's just stagecoaches and not wagons haha. Hmm. Anyway, there was a black cat that lived there, super cute and I named him Brahms after the stagecoach (Brougham I think) and composer. Anyway. Poor thing is long since passed I'm sure.

    Conan's opening, "Ahh the wagon..." makes me recall a Time/Life book series that was exhaustedly advertised with lengthy commercials in the early 80's. I was a kid and couldn't quote you any other commercial from then except for that. After showing an empty western town and inside a building it began, "The old west; there's not much left of it anymore except a few crumbling buildings and dusty mementos.". Probably no one else remembers that.

  • @Davett53
    @Davett53 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I love the granular details of wagons,....like the kinds hard woods used, the hand carving of the spokes. They had to invent lubricants where wood upon wood friction occurred, like the axles, and turning points. Lard, "bear grease", tallow, animal renderings, probably adding in beeswax. The invention of Oakum,....horse hair mixed with waxes and tallow, to create the earliest water resistant sealants, used to keep ships made of wood from leaking, even used with primitive plumbing pipes made of hollowed out tree limbs.

    If you're going to talk about wagons, you might want to start with the wheel, then move on to carts and wains, and go through how the wagon assisted the movements and migrations of ancient and more recent groups of people. The finale of the documentary could be an episode on station wagons (be sure to include the 'woodie').

    Springboard wagons had springs. Honestly, if you went over all the different variety of wagons that have existed in U.S. history (or pre-America) and showed people today reconstructing / building them, you could make a long-winded series out of the history of wagons. :)

    Once the axle and spokes were invented there really wasn't much development. I just saved you 8 hours.

    Hey, if you're the social media manager or expert at conan, please let conan know that we would love a video podcast. Conan is just an incredibly talented comic and we would love to see him talk. You know, if they only wanna stick to audio we can always switch off video and listen only to audio. Do give us the video option. :)

    Conan, (and I know you're reading this), there's something to be said about the bathtub that used to exclude so many. The bathtub is bigger but the water is finally getting into it. Along with the muck, yes. But so many great talents have been discovered that otherwise wouldn't be, because of the shear scale of the internet.

    There are a lot of questions that come up when you start thinking about the construction and use of wagons. How did they make wheels? What kept the rims together? Nails? Were the wheels made of a specific type of wood, or was it the same as the rest of the wagon? What would you do about a "flat tire"-a broken wagon wheel? Did they carry spare wheels? Did they invent wagon brakes at some point? When did wagons become steerable, and how? Were axles metal? If wooden, how big did they need to be?
