Almost all actors are Filipinos, also the ones who potray Spaniards are Filipinos with Spanish descent. most of them kept their original Filipino-Spanish accent which is similar to Mexican-Spanish. the fact is that this original Filipino Spanish accent is slowly dissapearing..
The spot where Rizal was shot, during the Spanish times, was close to the sea. When the Americans came, they reclaimed the sea and extended the park to what is now known as Quirino Grandstand.
Fun fact: GMA Films will plan to release a remastered HD version of this movie soon, maybe in Netflix. They have already done remastering this movie through Central Digital Lab.
The late Direk Marilou Diaz-Abaya (director of "Jose Rizal") once told us , during a film and TV workshop in 2005, that the winter scene (Rizal in his cold cheap hotel room) was actually shot during the EL NINO season (1997). She even told us that the temperatures on-location for that specific scene were "topping the charts". OMG!! Now that's great professionalism and superb acting: The scene was carried out soooo realistic and convincing that you would NOT even think that it was actually hot that shooting day.
Yes, Jose Rizal didn't want a revolution because he believed that we aren't ready for it yet. He wanted the Filipinos to be recognized and to be equal by the Spaniards, and The Philippines to be an annex or province of Spain. But he also wanted the Filipinos to see and to wake up about the abuses made my the colonizers, for us to stand up for our rights. Andres Bonifacio was the revolutionary and was inspired by Jose Rizal's novels. Spanish control all over the country are getting weaker and weaker due to different uprisings and the Katipunan, until the katipunan was discovered. They still fought though.

As far as i know, the casts were filipinos and mestizos filipinos. One remark is that the one who was portrayed as padre Damaso was mestizo filipino. Except those extra characters like guardias civil are Caucasians either americans or europeans.
This film won several FAMAS and Metro Manila Film Fest awards including best picture, actor, director, cinematography, score etc. Cesar Montano portrayed Rizal well although he was physically taller than the actual height of Jose Rizal (5'9" vs 5'3"). The artist who played as his mother Teodora Alonzo is Gloria Diaz who was the first Filipina to be crowned Miss Universe in 1969. Fun fact, Gloria as far as I can remember has 11 brothers and sisters and I have had the pleasure to know them and visit their home on a few occasions. Her brother Jose A Diaz who we fondly call Joe was a dear friend (may he rest in peace) who took me into their home for a couple years when I was struggling.

Mr.Jaime Fabregas who played the role of Luis Taviel de Andrade may look like a Spanish actor or atleast a foreigner.. but he's a very great and well known Filipino actor..thats the reason why he's fluent in speaking tagalog 😊😊
If you think about it, Philippines was governed under the Mexican Vice Royalty. It makes sense to hear Mexican Spanish back then. Plus, a Spanish vlogger who listened to some Filipino recording speaking Spanish, said that they used an older Castille Spanish which is no longer used anywhere even in Latin America. I don't what that means, but given our distance from Spain, it also makes sense.

I even saw grade school pupils watch it but I don't think they could understand the story as the movie was not chronological and there were parts in the movie where characters in Rizal's novels also played a role.
I'm glad that we watched this with a supervising teacher to explain and connect what was happenning, but that was already around 2008, several years later after this movie was released.
I could't watch the entire reaction video. But i hope you figured out later on in the movie that the black and white portions are scenes from Rizal's novels Noli and Fili (that's how we shorten the titles). So it would have been best before watching the film to know atleast the synopses of the novels. In the first part, that friar who molested the Filipina is Padre Damaso, who is actually the father of Maria Clara. :)
The Luneta site in the movie was filmed in the northern region of the country I think it was in Ilocos Norte they built an old Luneta site near the sea wherein the New Luneta in Manila was near the sea as well. I am not really sure if it was in Ilocos region but I knew it was by the northern region.
Hello, thank you for this reaction and I'm so glad I discovered your channel. I hope you react to more Filipino movies, there are plenty in Netflix. Plenty of Filipinos will want more of your content. As for your reaction, I find it interesting you're focused on what happened in the trial and the miscarriage of justice. It gives me a glimpse of how the movie will be perceived by people who are less exposed to Rizal. Meanwhile, when we study Rizal in school, we mostly talk about his life and his novels, so the trial is just a small part of that. This movie was incredibly high budget when it came out in the 90s, and probably still is the most expensive historical film ever made.

@ 45:22 The actor was supposed to be a Spaniard. Filipinos including the insulares - those who are ethnically Spanish but born in the Philippines like Fr. Burgos were also discriminated against but the native Filipino was at the bottom of the totem pole in those days. Interestingly, Rizal's maternal grandfather was Spanish mestizo and a deputy for the Philippines in the Spanish Cortes.
Shooting in the back signifies that the person is a traitor but Rizal turned his back because even in the last moment of his life, he was never a traitor.
@@SolLunaTVHi. Haven't seen it but it maybe safe to assume it has English subtitles considering it has now become a practice to add them, I noticed. The producers now target the international scene more. More local films now make it to sites like Netflix. Even the slapstick comedy ones.
Rizal was considered a traitor to mother Spain, so they shoot them in the back. Also, the Luneta or Bagumbayan field where he was executed was close to the bay before the land reclamation by the Americans. The first line of soldiers were natives and the 2nd line were spaniards in case the natives refuse their order to shoot. I would also like to add that Bagumbayan field or Luneta now where Rizal died was where they execute common criminals, conspirators/seditionist and traitors. So execution was a daily occurance in this place. Someone or sometimes several at one time were executed on a daily basis. This was not a good place as it is now, and people who enjoyed watching executions and were curious would wake up early, and go there in the morning to watch. Hence, the extra companies of soldiers surrounding the field were formed.

The story that a group of Filipinos sent Rizal to Europe to study is historically not true. Rizal's family was relatively rich. They leased land from the frailes and had people work on it. Later on when Rizal wrote El Fili his family was already in trouble with them and had less money. The Katipunan was only founded in 1892 after Rizal had returned to the Philippines and tried to found La Liga Filipina which did not succeed. Bonifacio and other former members of the Liga founded the Katipunan soon after Rizal was exiled to Dapitan. Paciano Rizal joined later I think.
rizal is wrongfully accused of rebellion. tru rising of rebellion in the provinces and rizals books deemed the spanish goverment the cause of this rebellion that rizal didnt agree. hes truly a national hero of the Philippines. he only wants equality from spanish and not revolt against them as cause him to be sentetence to death in firing squad.

All actors are Filipino with few having Spanish blood
The story that a group of Filipinos sent Rizal to Europe to study is historically not true.
Rizal's family was relatively rich. They leased land from the frailes and had people work on it. Later on when Rizal wrote El Fili his family was already in trouble with them and had less money.
The Katipunan was only founded in 1892 after Rizal had returned to the Philippines and tried to found La Liga Filipina which did not succeed. Bonifacio and other former members of the Liga founded the Katipunan soon after Rizal was exiled to Dapitan. Paciano Rizal joined later I think.
Maybe they will upload GomBurZa in Bilibili with subtitle. I hate it coz bilibili is not available here.
rizal is wrongfully accused of rebellion. tru rising of rebellion in the provinces and rizals books deemed the spanish goverment the cause of this rebellion that rizal didnt agree. hes truly a national hero of the Philippines. he only wants equality from spanish and not revolt against them as cause him to be sentetence to death in firing squad.
