I think people don't understand the double dunk, he didn't dunk with two balls, he dunked with one and the way he did it was he dunked with his right hand, grabbed it with his left hand and switched back to his right hand and dunked it again.
No one thinks he dunked with two balls, which is not only possible, but relatively easy to do. Legitimately dunking one ball twice is impossible, at least on Earth. It could be done on a planet or moon with much lower gravity. As mentioned in this video, Earl himself refuted the claim that he ever did such an obviously impossible thing. Anyone who thinks it's possible has a poor understanding of how things actually work in the world around them. By the way, hanging off the rim, not to mention letting the ball bounce, like Steph Curry did - ballislife.com/steph-curry-does-earl-the-goat-manigaults-double-dunk-sort-of/ - doesn't count.
My uncle lived up there and he told me Michael used to come up there and play while Earl was there watching him (they schooled him a few times but not often). Earl inspired him in a way once everybody told him the stories about Earl which lead to Michael being even hungrier to elevate his game.
@@DjMustang24 Your uncle is wrong. Michael lived in North Carolina certainly didn't come up to NY to watch basketball. He was so young he doesn't even remember living in NY
question772000 The difference is he’s waiting on a free heart transplant. David Rockefeller bought and paid for his. Like it or not right or wrong it’s true
May he rest in peace, I hear a lot of people feeling like others should have helped out, Helping people out is a choice. It doesn't make someone mean or uncaring. It's just that now a days being poor is richer than the riches. And even when your rich you can't save everybody!
Earl is the real deal, make no mistake about it. I read an article around 20 years ago and it blew my mind. They called Earl the Goat because he used to pick quarters off the TOP of the backboard. Goat was a reference to his jumping ability. Then there was the legendary Rucker battle between Earl and Dr. J. By all accounts Earl lit up Dr. J, though the Dr. scored plenty himself. But, Earl was that good to where even Dr. J couldn't stop him. The only reason he never went to the NBA was because he said teams would only offer the league minimum to an unproven player. He was making more money hustlin' on the streets than teams could offer, so he turned down the offers...
Total BS myth. Even Manigault himself later admitted it. Nobody can take anything off the top of the backboard, especially not a 6'1" person. That would require somewhere over a 60" vertical leap, which even Olympic athletes aren't close to.
The Moral of this story is "Pick your friends CAREFULLY!!! If Earl Manigault and Len Bias had made a better choice in friends; there is a good chance both would be alive today and Historic Figures in NBA Lore today. Both men were failed by acquaintances who offered them drugs as a Token of Friendship. I know the decision was theirs to make; however being young and influenced by peers was devastating to their lives.
knicks9899 Sam Worthen took twenty bucks from me in a game of H-O-R-S-E and I had him down two letters and still lost. Those courts demoralized me, when otherwise I thought I had game.
I saw an interview with Kareem where he said the man he most feared was Earl Manigault on a fast break running towards him or something like that. I apologize if I butchered it.
If this guy had been born 20 years later, he would have been coached and tutored to the NBA. Because he was born in an era of segregationist white supremacy (there are many kinds of white supremacy that still exist in America but that one is pretty much dead) he didn't get a deal, didn't make money and died unable to get the medical treatment he would have easily been able to get if he was a pro. Essentially, racism killed the guy as it has killed so many millions of other, more regular people.
b.s. my 1st response is he was lazy.....I am minority with no bennies for having a life without being a pro this or pro that. Lets quit tis crap and see it as it was. wish him not a basd life , but lets admit he squandered a skill I wish I woulda had
N Kel I cannot say racism killed him, but I do agree if he were 18 today he would have been the first pick of this draft and had handlers since he was 14. He would have had his high school games on ESPN and his every move followed by millions of adoring fans. Keep in mind none of that happened back in the 50s, not even for the best white players, its more about the growth of TV sports. BUT!! In his day, racism wasn't discussed, it was just a fact of life and it did play a role in his decision making.
+Doubletake 123 Excellent point on the handlers, nobody bought Earl's family a hummer like they did for LeBron. If I was LeBron I would take the car as well so hopefully I do not sound like a jerk just felt your point was very salient.
I used to ball hard!!! Made cats wonder how my skin tone was so fine. Rebound is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks to youtube I can finally put a real face to this legend. I still can't believe how many people do not know about this man. I truly hope goat park is still in NY and that it still means something to the people who live there, R.I.P The "G.O.A.T" The Greatest. Of. All. Time.
So many brothas could have made it like him, but the streets and drugs and the lure of lifes riches brought them back down to earth. The Goat had gotten props from Kareem.
Every city has it's own playground basketball legends.. In Los Angeles California we had Raymond Lewis who in the 10th grade while still in high school played in the old Pro Am league at Cal State Los Angeles against the NBA pro athletes and held his own.. I saw him play there as a kid.. Also got drafted by 76ers and was killing number1 draft pick Doug Collins and other players, but got blackballed out of NBA cause of attitude problem they claimed.. Saw him score 50 points in summer pro league games before half time and not even Michael Cooper could stop him when he played for LAKERS, Freman Williams could score too and became #2 All time NCAA behind Pistol Pete Marivich, but he couldn't touch RayLew..
That's why I don't totally subscribe to the GOAT theory. Too many unsung icons and legends, that weren't covered. Prime example barely ANY footage of a whole league; Basketball's ABA Baseball's Negro League along with others that weren't included or recognized. Thanks for the post.
he stilll entertained people day to day on the streets and competed against nba players.. just didnt want to go to the nba he didn't believe in it. not a waste he was happy where he was and so was everybody who came to watch him and play with him for free
As far as new york playground legends go no one comes close to Lloyd 'Swee' Pea' Daniels. I remember finding the book Swee' Pea and Other Playground Legends: Tales of Drugs, Violence, and Basketball in my high school library during my sophmore year in high school while i was playing JV ball and thinking "man, i wonder if this is all bullshit or if this dude Lloyd Daniels was really that good...and if he was that good I wish i could have seen the form of his jumper so i could copy it." Then out of freaking nowhere 'Tark the Shark' Jerry freaking Tarkanian becomes the new head coach of my home team San Antonio Spurs and all of a sudden I see freaking Lloyd Swee' Pea Daniels in a San Antonio Spurs uniform and he is freaking playing real freaking minutes and no looking passes to big Dave Robinson and coming down hill leading the fast break dribbing down low and slow mo real smooth and pulling up for fast break 3 pointers....and freaking burrying them bitches all net! It was freaking surreal. And you could see glimpses of what would have been greatness. He had court vision, mid-range, long-range, low-post, pick and pop, pick and roll, not much defense but plenty of finger roll! Lloyd Daniels was the real freaking deal and I got to see him play on my NBA team. It was a gift. Lloyd Daniels is no doubt the greatest basketball talent that we never truly got to see in it's full God given potential. Name one other playground legend that played a handful of high school games, no college games and made it to the NBA on pure talent alone and held his own. And by the way Lloyd was half the player he should have been by the time he made it to the NBA on the spurs team. Those were fun years for me and guess what? My freaking jump shot improved when I copied the way Lloyd flattened his wrist all the way back on him jumpers which made the ball travel in a beautiful natural arc with no effort from me. True genius...glad I got to experience it.
The great ones always seem to fall to drugs as a way out its sad to see that happen, he was such a talent player and i pray that this teachers others not to turn to drugs, with God's help u can do anything, u can make it.
The goatwas one of the best players ever. Sane age as kareem-The new each other. He could jump and dunk while catchung the ball still in the air and dunk it again. He head a hard life got addicted to drugs and never made college or nba in karrems eyes-Best player ever. There is a grate movie abot him called rebound-The legend of earl the goat manigault. He said for every jordan there is agoat-Many really tallanted players just dont make it
No he couldn't. Nobody in history can do that, not even David "Skywalker" Thompson. Myth. Even Dwight Howard can't do it, and he's tried. 6'11" with a ridiculous vertical and HE can't do it. Just TOUCHING the top of the backboard is impossible, much less grabbing something off of it.
Jordan had to stop doing basketball camps early on in his career. Why is that? Because too many 18 yr old five star recruits who didn’t know any better were shutting Michael’s ass down, that’s why. He’s just another guy at the gym as long as the gym has no NBA officials around to call ridiculous fouls. The NBA needed a star, one who could make spectacular dunks, so they created one out of MJ.
He was great amateur player, and if he took a different course in his life, he would had made it to the professional basketball either the NBA or ABA. there is an old saying "there is nothing worse in this life than wasted talent". I hope other young people learn a lesson from his life, and not make the same mistakes he made. Although he made mistakes, he is still a great man, because he dedicated his life to his community. He is the original GOAT!
Love people that teach a positive lifestyle to our black youth. And I say that as no disrespect, because even though we are divided, we are one people in the US. I am a veteran, and "KNOW" that when it boils down to it, the world sees us all as Americans, not black or white Americans. To me, whites and blacks need to build more relationships through transparency.
I imagine everyone under a certain age would naturally assume his nickname was "the Greatest Of All Time", but it was about how high he could get up there

Steezo!!! The Quiet Legend at Rucker....
Michael jordan walks like him
MelyHeadz Yep!!!!!
My uncle lived up there and he told me Michael used to come up there and play while Earl was there watching him (they schooled him a few times but not often). Earl inspired him in a way once everybody told him the stories about Earl which lead to Michael being even hungrier to elevate his game.
mj studied all the greats before him, as should the aspiring, learning is the best education one can attain.
Fresno State Hooper people don’t realize that’s what it means to “Be Like Mike”
@@DjMustang24 Your uncle is wrong. Michael lived in North Carolina certainly didn't come up to NY to watch basketball. He was so young he doesn't even remember living in NY
He's waiting on a heart transplant and David Rockefeller had 7 heart transplants?!
question772000 white supremacy is a mother
Rockefeller is a $atanic Elite. His gOD rules this world so of course he gets 7
He’s not waiting. He died over 20 years ago.
MONEY!
question772000 The difference is he’s waiting on a free heart transplant. David Rockefeller bought and paid for his. Like it or not right or wrong it’s true
grew up in the sixties in north jersey. knew a lot of guys like this. sad but some folks lives roll easy. thanks for telling this story.
Exactly! Every state had their star players who were never heard of.
When people say the goat but don't really know that it resides from
You don't
Is that the same court from “ABOVE THE RIM” 🤔
Earl the goat was the greatest streetball player period! His problem was that he loved getting high more than the game.
You can't really say that he loved to get high more than the game. The man had an addiction
Lmao true
Can’t blame him! I probably love getting high as much as I love the game, both are escapes from the human condition.
The only certainties in life are Change and death!
Amazing how these namesakes/titles are being given to current athletes all the while the original goes unheard of.
Don Cheadle played hom in the movie about his life. A must see.
One of the best movies ever seen about a basketball player
The best and most unknown
you don't have idea, see what 'bout Jabbar says
See the DVD `bout Earl's life
You said it best🙌👍🙏💪😎
May he rest in peace, I hear a lot of people feeling like others should have helped out, Helping people out is a choice. It doesn't make someone mean or uncaring. It's just that now a days being poor is richer than the riches. And even when your rich you can't save everybody!
Did they say this man was 48. Sheesh!!!! He look 70 years old
RIP Goat. Greatest playground basketball player of all time.
This looks like the grimy New Y?ork early 90's
KillerBen187 yeah, I couldn't find an exact year for this clip but your right you can tell cause reebok had those reebok pumps our in the early 90s.
i wish i was related to that amazing man/player! R.I.P The GOAT
Manigault died from congestive heart failure in 1998 at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City. //Wikipedia
I know the decision was theirs to make; however being young and influenced by peers was devastating to their lives.
just how high could this guy jump? a real legend. The Goat
I live a few blocks from Goat Courts on the Upper West Side. Many great games there.
knicks9899
Sam Worthen took twenty bucks from me in a game of H-O-R-S-E and I had him down two letters and still lost. Those courts demoralized me, when otherwise I thought I had game.
knicks9899 no you don’t
I saw an interview with Kareem where he said the man he most feared was Earl Manigault on a fast break running towards him or something like that. I apologize if I butchered it.
People are here talk about Raymond Lewis have you ever heard about him
I appreciate the post
1:11 study his shot process
+N Kel you to stupid to understand.. Have several seats
+SDS Overfiend and it was explained too -_-
I used to ball hard!!! Made cats wonder how my skin tone was so fine. Rebound is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks to youtube I can finally put a real face to this legend. I still can't believe how many people do not know about this man. I truly hope goat park is still in NY and that it still means something to the people who live there, R.I.P The "G.O.A.T" The
Greatest.
Of.
All.
Time.
Joshua Herrera please go back and get your GED
As a sixers fan, thanks for the story.
That's why I don't totally subscribe to the GOAT theory.
Too many unsung icons and legends, that weren't covered.
Prime example barely ANY footage of a whole league; Basketball's ABA
Baseball's Negro League
along with others that weren't included or recognized.
Thanks for the post.
I agree with Jon About impossible to declare a GOAT in any sport. Too many variables. Too many what ifs.
I remember watching this as a kid! Rest In Paradise Earl " The GOAT" Manigault 🙏🏿🙏🏿
Gerald Green did double dunk in NBA slam dunk contest
That was after this guy like literaly 40 yrs before Green :) Plus Earl did it with one ball not two balls :)
I'm sorry. Colombia South Carolina.
Positivity instead of negativity is great!
he stilll entertained people day to day on the streets and competed against nba players.. just didnt want to go to the nba he didn't believe in it. not a waste he was happy where he was and so was everybody who came to watch him and play with him for free
Yooo I lived by that court my whole life & never knew that was where they got the name from 😂
I remember earl, he was amazing to watch. Definitely the GOAT❤️🥲
But there's another guy they talk about out here in Los Angeles on the same level His name was Raymond Lewis have you heard about him
As far as new york playground legends go no one comes close to Lloyd 'Swee' Pea' Daniels. I remember finding the book Swee' Pea and Other Playground Legends: Tales of Drugs, Violence, and Basketball in my high school library during my sophmore year in high school while i was playing JV ball and thinking "man, i wonder if this is all bullshit or if this dude Lloyd Daniels was really that good...and if he was that good I wish i could have seen the form of his jumper so i could copy it."
Then out of freaking nowhere 'Tark the Shark' Jerry freaking Tarkanian becomes the new head coach of my home team San Antonio Spurs and all of a sudden I see freaking Lloyd Swee' Pea Daniels in a San Antonio Spurs uniform and he is freaking playing real freaking minutes and no looking passes to big Dave Robinson and coming down hill leading the fast break dribbing down low and slow mo real smooth and pulling up for fast break 3 pointers....and freaking burrying them bitches all net!
Thanks for telling that story.
This dude a success. He did the drugs he wanted, when he wanted---> self-determination at it's best
Im not sure what to say/But im glad I watched this/
The great ones always seem to fall to drugs as a way out its sad to see that happen, he was such a talent player and i pray that this teachers others not to turn to drugs, with God's help u can do anything, u can make it.
He said for every jordan there is agoat-Many really tallanted players just dont make it
Could snatch a quarter off the top of the backboard and leave change on the way down.
@@SealofPerfection you need to wake up boi there are people of excellence out there
dude talk to me when Jordan can touch the top of a backboard, talk to me when jordan outplays Wilt,Kareem,Dr.J and other legends.
Roky Erickson rocks damn stop hating and lying smh your a sad person
He was da beastiest. Dude was mad beast. Word up
Joe Hammond and Pee Wee Kirkland were also N.Y. city streetball legends who could've went pro!!!
The goat is like' Hook 'from Oakland, CA playground ledgend
He was great amateur player, and if he took a different course in his life, he would had made it to the professional basketball either the NBA or ABA. there is an old saying "there is nothing worse in this life than wasted talent". I hope other young people learn a lesson from his life, and not make the same mistakes he made. Although he made mistakes, he is still a great man, because he dedicated his life to his community. He is the original GOAT!
Stgfre
earl manigault
was NO amatuer ..
he was the GOAT
No he had the chance to be the Goat. He was a great amateur player. Despite that I still respect the man.
I judge how close people are to death by how slow or fast they speak. They get to speaking slow, time is ticking.
Great wrist flip on the jumper
Y’all need to see the movie about his life. It’s one of the best biographies I’ve ever seen. It’s staring Don Chidle
Seen The Goat in Ruckers Park in 67 that summer. Grabbed a quarter off the back board him an Connie were In that game, along with Mel Daniel's.
I imagine everyone under a certain age would naturally assume his nickname was "the Greatest Of All Time", but it was about how high he could get up there
This the definition of a REAL ONE
"he say nanigoat?" - rebound
- that is my grandma cousin
Hey, it seems you and @ivorytrice in the comment section are related or you both share grandmothers of the goat
Some real ballers come from NY...my pops went to college with a cat from NY..my pops said he was a beast on the court so I know pops ain't lying.
was kareem in the movie of rebound? how does he know him? why wasnt he mentioned in the movie?
he was mentioned all through the movie, and there was an actor playing him with talking scenes. Kareem's birth name is Lew Alcindor.
juicy26
Kareem was in the movie. And he knew him from playing against him in high school and in the Rucker league.
