Funny thing is cows can walk through any fence, even the electric ones...they choose not to. A cow if you've met one up close is something to be respected. It's great name.
Anna never expected The Cow to be played in classical chess, especially by serious players. She designed (rediscovered) The Cow as a symmetrical opening that would be easy for beginner chess players to remember and have fun with, despite it putting white at a slight disadvantage, and black at a bad disadvantage. For beginners-facing-beginners the opening disadvantages aren’t going to make a difference. She thought through the name to find an English word for an animal that she thought beginner English-as-a-second-or-third-language learners would be familiar with. It was also a joke birthday gift to her GM dad, and her GM mum *hated* it and roasted her mercilessly. Juan said he might use it once, maybe, and Pia told him she’d leave him if he used it in a tournament. Neither of them used it once anywhere until Anna begged and pleaded for them to come online and on camera for a one-off experimental game. To me Galperin obviously chose to take The Cow classical for two reasons that I think are very intertwined. In researching her he came across her pet cow. And he realised that with their comparative ratings, he had some wiggle room to handicap himself. So in playing the cow, he makes the game more fun/challenging for himself by taking an opening handicap instead of taking the white advantage against a much lower rated player. And he gives her a present that he can afford to give. He plays the Cow, and Anna being Anna, she is thrilled whether she wins or loses that The Cow was played. She was definitely disappointed she lost. But still thrilled for her Cow. So excited in her TH-cam video. And Pia turned out to have a lot of fun when forced to play the cow as a favour for her TH-camr daughter. Much more than even the indulgent Juan. It’s not what Pia is used to. Pia doesn’t handicap herself when she plays, she’s a relentless shark in sweet packaging. So The Cow gave her an entirely new experience in chess, beyond playing a new opponent. Being a shark even with such a handicap thrilled her.
@@sebolatanakinlosotu702I read all that. Pretty easy tbh, plus the whole TH-cam font is not hard on the eyes. It is a little, but on phone it reads fine and quick.
For low rated players the opening has one huge advantage. If you're only used to e4-e5, you will probably lose everything else against a player with a reasonable opening knowledge. I'd rather play the cow than the Sicilian, it's slow but you get your opponent out of familiar theory waters.
