Can You Make Good Music With Bad Synths?

Fleshing out a song idea with two loser synths. A Korg Rhythm 55 clocks an Akai Timbre Wolf via gate converter. The Timbre Wolf sequencer plays voice 1, and also plays two parts of the RedSound Dark Star XP2. Timbre Wolf voice 4 and Dark Star part 3 eke out a melody. A 16 note sequence played against the 3/4 time drum box pattern makes for an interesting, Zappa-ish progression.

Good take on this setup 👍 I could make proper use of some pedals to extend the limited sound palette. As Master keyboard it's really nice, too. And don't forget the great sequencer it has.

i love my wolf. i will keep it forever. its misunderstood because it looks like it should sound like something else. i like it because it is unique. you can play great leads on it as well.

I simply could not sell the Darkstar fast enough, after getting it. I really don't miss it. At all.

The easy answer is to do an internet search for them both. Basically, the Timbre Wolf is extremely limited in what it can do. It has some very nice features, but as far as sounds, you're not going to get much different than what is presented here. Plus, it was doomed from the start by cringe-worthy demos. The Dark Star, on paper, should be a killer synth. However, it sounds chintzy (unless you really work at it), and is hard to program. Plus, the control response is not smooth at all. Values tend to jump around when turning some knobs. This a synth you REALLY need to have the manual handy to figure out.
