I still remember how blown away I was back then by how crisp this game looked on Dreamcast. The Hi-Res Textures, Anti Aliasing and Smooth Framerate really sucked you into its cartoon world - when it comes to presentation, I'd even pick this entry over its direct successor Rayman 3.
Words cannot describe how much I love the DC version of this game. I honestly think it's one of the best 3D platformers of all time. Great job on this and excellent choice! !
Thank you for uploading this. Rayman 2: Revolution was one of my all-time favorite games as a child. The various versions of Rayman 2 hold up to this day.
This game is definitely one of my favorite games of all time for several reasons: The controls are tight and the gameplay is smooth, there're no frustrating moments in the game, and the game introduces enough new elements to keep the experience from getting stale. By the way, there are some fundamental differences between each version of the game. Here's a brief summary of them: N64 & PC: These are the original versions of the game released in 1999. I can't say what the controls are like for PC, but on N64, the analog controls are quite silky smooth. PS1: This is what I consider one of the worst versions of Rayman 2. Although it has a few enhancements such as the remastered music and some extra content like an unlockable prototype level from the original 2D build of Rayman 2, there was so much noticeable amount of content cut from the game. And because of the PS1's graphical limitations, the graphics aren't as smooth as the N64 original. The game also includes English voice-acting, but it's terrible quality. Dreamcast: The one you're playing right now. This is regarded as one of the best versions of Rayman 2. Not only does the game have all the content from the N64 game, but it also adds some new content on top such as the unlockable mini-games. The graphics have also been enhanced to support 640x480 resolution in anamorphic widescreen at 60 fps. PS2: This version is also considered one of the best versions of Rayman 2. It's a full remake of the original with many fundamental enhancements. The previously 2D backgrounds and level assets have been upgraded to full 3D backgrounds and platforms. The Hall of Doors level select screen has been replaced with a full open-world hub level you can fully explore and collect more lums. Finally, many of the levels have been altered with more difficult platforming and more enemy variety. However, there are a noticeable amount of load times, and the frame rate has been downgraded to 30 fps instead of 60 fps. I can't say much about the handheld versions of Rayman 2, but the less said about them, the better.
I have the DS version as well. I think it's because since it only has a D-pad, the controls aren't as good as the versions on systems that have analog stick controllers. I never tried using the touch controls because I know that playing a 3D platformer with touch-only controls is a miserable experience.
I had the DS Version of Rayman 2 and let's just say you better skip out on this one. It's exactly like the N64 version but with a far worse soundtrack than the N64 already offered and the framerate is just abyssmal, reaching levels of about 15fps and 20fps in most cases. And you control it with a DPad. Simply put, the N64 version isn't meant to be played that way. Also the other control scheme where you use the DS's stylus on the touch screen to control Rayman just feels awkward and shouldn't be used either. This is what i call the worst version of the game, yes even the PS1 version is better despite the cut content and pretty bad voice acting. At least it controls way better even without the Dualshock controller, since the controls were build around the use of a DPad and not everyone had a Dualshock controller at the time. And the soundtrack is just awesome.
FastTquick - I'd only ever played the N64 version, and i have always loved how the voices are done, with the charming and hilarious nonsense-speak. So when i went back to play the PSN PS1 version on my PS3, i really did not like it. At all. Sure, part of it is that it's just not good voice acting. But mostly it's that it ruins a lot of the magic of the game-- the garbled voices add so much to the fairy tale, otherworldly aesthetic that permiates the whole game. So yeah, i'd have to say no thank you to the voice acting, whether it's good or not. Although eventually i'm going to give Revolutions a try (it too is sitting on my PS3, as of yet unplayed). But i do agree on the soundtrack of the PS1 version-- the music's quite nice on that one. As for the portable versions, i recently picked up Rayman 2 Forever for the GBC (which i'm actually playing on my GBP/GC) and have played just a bit of it. So far so good. I really love the 2D pixelated look of the old platformers, so it looks great, even though the zoomed-in camera and large sprites take some getting used to. But, even though i've only played a little past the first level, the gameplay seems fun and challenging, and not at all too difficult. Makes me want to play the first Rayman now, which i've somehow missed all these years.
This is probably one of my all-time favorite games or at least one that I hold very highly. I love the mystical atmosphere and the sense of adventure it creates. It always made me feel like I was the hero, exploring this mysterious world and reawakening its strength. It was also very well-made and was a joy to play, and even though it did have its weaker elements, they were never bad or frustrating enough to make stop playing. I've always wanted to see a new 3d entry in the series, one that brings back the fantasy-adventure vibe and a story that's maybe not complex but had weight. I also have to say that this is one of the best reviews I've seen of this game. I think you really went into detail on why the game works and even touched on its faults yet still explained why they're not much of a hindrance. Very nice work.
I played this game when I was 8 years old. I absolutly loved it. The music and atmosphere gives my a feeling of extreme nostalgia. As a child i felt if i was in that world.
I played this game when i was 2,5 years (I knew Rayman before Sonic or Mario :) ), even before it was stated 7+. I had nightmares, but now, I love the music and platformers.
I was a QA tester at Ubisoft on the N64, PS2, PC and DC versions of this game. Played it *way* too much back then but I think I'd want to play it again now.
I can do one better, I have my launch day Hong Kong one from 98, WITH a null modem block because communists still wanted to outright ban the internet back then. Don't know if having one with that makes it rarer than a launch day japanese one or not.
I love the PC/Dreamcast version of this game so freaking much. I first played the PS1 version, and I loved that already. But then the PC version after that, and it's amazing. Levels are longer and better. Going back to the PS1 version seems kinda claustrofobic. I'd like to see a remake that's built from the ground up, something like the new Crash and Spyro games. This has to be my favourite game ever.
@@raresmacovei8382 nah, the frame rate, resolution and the music suck on n64. No version is identical. I meant that I like the PC and the dreamcast version are my two favourite versions. I wasn't comparing them
Still a masterpiece, no doubt about it, everyone else who says otherwise is wrong. A better Mario 64 than Mario 64, masterfully crafted art, world and controls, a beautiful blend of cartoony cuteness and grim Tim Burton style, full of whimsy and wonder. My favourite game of all time, with a unique charm and FUCK I LOVE THIS GAME.
Look at the textures on Dreamcast. What a beautiful game. No version looked as good as this one to my knowledge. 480p 16/9. I am currently playing this game but I'm stuck and can't continue without collecting more Lums but that is proving difficult. Not as frustrating as Rayman 1, but it's definitely testing me.
9:02 the second of the four masks reminds me of Ed's head from Tonic Trouble. Maybe Ubisoft made the mask look like Ed on purpose since Tonic Trouble was a pretty recent game they released on the N64 at the time.
Dreamcast and PC vesions are the best, I played on PC (P233MMX + Voodoo2 @1024x768@60fps), the game looks stunning, smooth and beautiful. One of the greatest platformer ever made!
You forgot something critical about the music:while rayman 1 just included midi sounds, starting with rayman 2 they used a whole orchestra to record the audio. That was insanea
I've never played Rayman 2, but it's amazing if you're paying attention, you can clearly see the zany style of today's Rayman already. The first game was pretty tame, but from the way he walks, to the exaggerated enemies, Rayman 2 is clearly where today's Rayman style started.
Fantastic video, no platformer has ever held my interest except for this one, being one of my favourite games of all time. Thanks for the awesome analysis
The Dreamcast version has more consistent framerate & better picture quality than the PS2 version. Yeah, PS2 ports of Dreamcast games (e.g. Rayman 2, MDK2, Headhunter) were not all that great, despite the fact thre PS2 TECHNICALLY had more processing power. The devs *really* had to dedicate themselves to harnessing that PP.
I think it took the developers a few years to come to grips with the PS2. How did Test Drive Le Lmans, Dead or Alive 2, and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 (Zero) turn out on the PS2 compared to the DC?
implantgames much worse, with lower 512x448i or 640x240p resolutions, lots of jaggies, worst sound quality in many ports, and unstable frame-rates (examples of that: Fur Fighters, Rez and Crazy Taxi).
i got this game on dreamcast when it came out.. it was PHENOMENAL, but i beat it in like 2 or 3 days so i exchanged it for something else.. i don't know if they still have that type of policy at stores anymore
The worst part about Rayman 1's having to find all the cages, is the limited lives and continues per save. And many cages require jump testing possible secrets/ death.
Oooooh! 😱❤ I was going to play the PS1 version of this game, but then I saw the Dreamcast version, so now I want this one instead. Without a doubt. *Favorites this video* 😍👍
Rayman 2 is one of my favorite games, not sure if it's my most favorite, but it's there, but I can easily say it's one of my most Nostalgic games, the controls are nice, the difficulty is easy (which was good for my younger self), and the memorable (to me) music. Rayman 2 isn't just one of my favorite games, but its my favorite Rayman game (alongside Origins), the first one was nuts with its difficulty, the third one was.... Alright, IMO, Legends is pretty damn good, but they just can't match this one for me, maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's something else, but this game is one that shaped my childhood, thus putting the Rayman series close to my heart. Did I mention the memorable music and Nostalgia? Probably.
I wish there guys who made that R3-Rayman mod with the red hoodie for just sonic generations’ modern sonic gameplay style could made the Rayman 2-Dreamcast-Classic Rayman mod with the red handkerchief for just Sonic Generations’ Classic Sonic gameplay style, but I will admit this is honestly an excellent review of Rayman 2 I’ve ever seen in a long time.
Back when this game first came out I rented it for Dreamcast, made it to the final boss but had to quit since it was time to return the game. Dang! I really liked the game back then, but watching it now in your video, something immediately looked off to me. Its appears as if the game environments scrolls at 60FPS, but all characters move at 30 FPS (a holdover from PS1 / N64 perhaps). It makes the game look kind of jarring because of that. But no matter, I want to give the game another playthrough in the future, and your review only reaffirmed that! Good review as always, and keep it up!
Superb retrospective of one of my favourite games over the years, having bought it on PS1, PS2, Dreamcast and 3DS ... and have played all the other console versions in one way or another lol. While my best friend was playing Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie on his N64, I was enjoying Croc: Legend of Gobbos and Rayman 2: The Great Escape on my PS1 ... while his N64 games are still recognised as classics today, my alternative experiences were already being berated as underwhelming knock-offs by many, in comparison ... but I still enjoyed them. The game has a wonderful blend of visual style, charming characters, solid gameplay mechanics and (re-)playability.
Just play them. Old games don't cease to exist and are still there to be played. Don't discard the past without experiencing it first. Think of how many games exist. This is why I'm still not up to Wii/PS3 generation yet. Too much to play.
I see what you mean, but I have to disagree! The Spyro games don't 'need' a remaster either following that logic. But they look way more appealing to me now than they ever have, and I might even try that series for the first time now. Apart from how wonderful it is to see an old game with updated graphics, it also reintroduces a (possibly old and forgotten) franchise to a new audience. I would also much prefer a completely new Rayman game, but I also know that's not going to happen any time soon considering the lack of interest Ubisoft has in the franchise right now. If the inevitable success of a remaster can convince them, then I'm totally on board for it!
Indeed, and Tropical Freeze is also a fantastic game so it deserves all the love it can get ; ) Yeah there's definitely a difference between remasters and lazy ports of games that released only a few years ago with minor tweaks. The lazy ones have no reason to exist (unless it's for a platform that offers something unique, like the Switch with its combination of portability and decent hardware power). I do agree with you on that one, Rayman 2 wouldn't need any HUGE changes or improvements to the controls for example. Remasters work especially well for titles that are just a tad older, when the technology just wasn't quite there yet to build exactly what the developers had in mind.
I remember thinking Rayman 2 on N64 was going to be an N64DD launch title because of how expansive and emersive it was going to be. Well, imagine my surprise when it was in fact non other than the N64 console itself providing all the power and material for the game without the need for an add-on. Games like Rayman 2(beside the Zelda games and others) prove the N64 is more than capable of handling big and expansive games without the need for any hardware add-ons like the DD! All that you really need are the right developers and the magic and wizardry in programing and coding that make said games possible.
Huh. I didn't expect you to review the dreamcast version/only. I played only the PC version and there were a TON of unfair moments and frustrating parts, and its unanimously quoted (in Europe at least) worst aspect was the camera. I've heard kids SCREAM over this game, my neighbor was playing it and went MAD because sometimes the camera screwed up or a key he pressed didn't work. I've seen youtubers also have that same problem/complaint. Hearing you say that there was no such thing in this Dreamcast version and that it even had a 360 camera makes me very intrigued.
I have alot of versions because alot of versions of Rayman 2 have exclusive content like the PS1 Rayman 2 2D prototype ;) but i would still like too have a modern remake with all the exclusive content from all the versions together :) thanks for this awesome review ;) i love your content so i cant wait for the next episode
Another great review! I sadly never owned a Dreamcast so it looks like I really missed out because I had this game on PS1 and, well, it was alright but had some problems. When it was remade for the PS2 I was all over that and saw the greatness this game had. While I wasn't a big fan of the open world feel most everything else was good. It looks like I probably would have liked this version more. The silly voices like Banjo Kazooie and a level select would be great. I wish more platformers had this kind of world, bright and cartoon like with a dark story to it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I am a sucker for the N64-styled gibberish. The recently released Super Lucky's Tale has them oddly enough. Voodoo Vince is another good platformer if you're into colorful but dark platformers!
Rayman 2 is a bit strange to me. On one hand it has a bit clunky platforming controls and the level design itself has basically no level of challenge. But the sense of adventure, level variety and atmosphere is something you don't really see anywhere. While Rayman 3 has easily superior controls and combat mechanics and level design that actually makes the player utilize their platforming skills, its atmosphere and tone is no way near close to 2's. Hell, Rayman 3's level design sometimes feels like it's just an obstacle course with a different paintjob, while in Rayman 2 every area somehow feels strangely immersive, despite clearly being just a platforming level. Mechanically Rayman 3 is superior in every way, and yet I always find myself going back to playing 2 instead.
The atmosphere of rayman 3 is amazing and much better than the second game. for me the story of the second game was better beside that rayman 3 is a superior game in every way.
I think this game is still good. I occasionally take out the good ole N64 now and then to play it. Aside from slippery ice physics for the slide sections the game is pretty solid. I especially like the whole dream like setting the game was going for and how this one guy dreamed up the whole world the game takes place on which makes the robots and other assorted baddies in the game kind of like nightmares in a way.
Rayman 2 is a wonderful game too. It truly is a brilliant platformer. You know a similar game very few people have heard of? Tonic Trouble. It's another 3D platformer by Ubisoft that I find kind of a hidden gem (the PC version in particular). It's plenty hard to find, however, so I doubt you'll ever get to play that one. But Rayman 3 is certainly good as well! I wonder what you will review next...
You can't make videos this long on games I love so much! I'm gonna just end off sounding crazy because I have so much to comment on when it comes to Rayman 2! That was a great video! I love Rayman 2, it's probably my favorite 3D platformer of all times. It was developed for the N64 hardware first but ported to PC and Dreamcast second. I first played the PC version as a kid and loved it. I have played this game on so many platforms over the years and beaten it 100% on them. So the game feels a bit to easy for me at this point. The "worst" version is suppose to be the ps1 version because it introduced the awful voice acting and it has cut content, but considering the hardware it's probably the most impressive version. The most disappointing version is the 3DS port. It was suppose to be an enhanced port of the Dreamcast version (which is generally considered the best port) but instead it was a buggy mess with a gamebreaking glitch that stopped you from collecting the 1000'th lum. It's garbage, but the part where you water ski is a little bit easier because you can judge the distance better when using the 3D on the 3DS. I love the dreamcast version! No awful voice acting, the graphics are like the once on PC from my childhood (unlikes the ps2 version) and it runs butter smooth. (Also has a few secret multiply games if you go back on the first map there's a secret room with mini games) Btw I noticed some cut scenes from 5:02 that I don’t remember being in the Dreamcast version. Did you use the once from the PS2 version? Or maybe the Pal versions don’t have those.
Well I do live in Sweden but the game is English otherwise. But it is the PAL version, maybe it came out first (Ubisoft is a french studio after all) so maybe it was included just for the NTSC regions. Now I want replay it all to find out xD
Great review! I can't wait to play this one, though most likely I'll be getting the PS2 version since I have a PS2, not a Dreamcast, and far as I can tell, it stands alongside the DC version as the best version of the game.
Wait a minute, what's that version of the game? On N64 or on pc I don't remember climbing the tower where the water rise at the beginning of the video, plus the world map wasn't the same at all.
DjKiwi Consoles: PC N64 PS1 PS2 DC Portables: GBC iOS NDS 3DS The Dreamcast is usually considered the best version, with the PS2 being a close second. The portables are all okay at best (besides the GBC I am not familiar with it, I just know it exists, but I do know it is essentially a completely different game). The N64 and PC versions are considered to be good and the PS1 is the worst of the home console versions.
I have the PS1 version of Rayman 2 on my PS3 through PSN. Never really played much of it though-- still prefer the N64 version, though the music has a slight edge on the PS1 version. I've played a tiny bit of the GBC version, as i just picked it up for my GameBoy Player/GameCube, and it plays nicely. It looks a lot like Rayman 1, which is good because i love the look of the old platformers, but the large sprites and closed in view take some getting used to. I'm looking forward to really getting into it.
Great review as usual. Hated that damn plum riding in the lava level, apart from that the game is fantastic. I still need to get round to playing Hoodlum Havoc sometime.
As much as i loved (and still love) Rayman 2, i was quite disappointed with Rayman 3. It seemed contrived, without all the exploration, and the atmospheric, magical environments of 2 just weren't there. I haven't played it since it came out though, so maybe i should give it another shot.
MarkProductions - I will! I'm currently about halfway through Rayman 2 on my N64 (just got it HDMI modded, and it's beautiful), but i ordered Rayman 3 for my GameCube last night after this discussion, so i'll be getting back to it very soon.
The best version is by far the PS2 one, called "Rayman Revolution". You should play it even if you've completed the original game. It adds an overworld that connects all levels, updates the graphics, refines the combat system, adds new bosses... Just play it and see it for yourself!
I really don't like revolution tbh, it's only 30fps, which if your're used to the PC/Dreamcast version, is pretty much unplayable. Don't really like the new overworld either, it acts as a way too drawn out tutorial, being extremely frustrating for someone who has played the PC version many, many times. Also, the swimming controls are horrible.
Yeah, the overworld is kinda shitty, its only 30fps, 480i (25 fps for europe cos no PAL 60hz switch) whereas DC is 60hz 480p for EVERYONE if you have VGA (and 60hz 480i if you just have scart.)
implantgames idk if you have a 3ds, but rayman rd is a 3d remaster of the dreamcast version. I personally think its the best because it's in 3d, or 2d if you hate 3d, and its portable. just a suggestion 👌
Mania IMO Rayman 3D is one of the worse Rayman 2 ports. You can't get a game over (health regenerates after every death), the 1000th lum is unobtainable and the intro cutscene doesn't have the narrator.
I played Rayman 3 before Rayman 2, as my childhood friend liked Great Escape more, I think Hoodlum Havoc was my favourite. I love both. Both have different tone and style but in both we have same likable and rememberabke characters, beautiful worlds filled with secrets, story which keeps you on to the end... Not to mention great music, level design and great controls ;) Recently I've revisited both of them after at least 5 years since last time (maybe more) and I had amazing time with both of the games! I think main difference in gameplay between 2 and 3 is combat. In 3 you've got much more variety of enemies, often they attack in groups while almost all battles in 2 are 1vs1 duels. Also more bosses, more innovative and challenging than bosses from 2, and what is great, you can repeat battles with them what was not possible in Great Escape (at least on PC) Looking forward fot analise of Rayman 3 ;)
There was only one port that actually added new features, Rayman 2: Revolution on the PS2, best played with the 60FPS cheat code in an overclocked emulator since it only runs at 30 otherwise. Rayman DS was just a buggy port of the N64 version and Rayman 3D was a port or the Dreamcast version without the minigames and with a bug requiring the player to use glitches to get a yellow lum. I believe the mobile port is the same but with the glitch fixed.
I played this for the first time a couple of years ago and I was completely absorbed by it! In my opinion this is one of the best games on the Dreamcast!
It's really fact Ubi Soft wasn't used Emotion Engine a difficult CPU to work with at time when it got released not as difficult as super difficult PS3 Cell Processor
hiden name Rayman 1 is fun up until you realise that you cant beat the game unless you find all the electoons. Also the game is unbearably hard, that i never bothered to finish it the legit way. And its a shame too cause the levels themselves are unique but the bosses are tedious and some of the hazards in the game are very cheap and can sometimes be overwhelming. I don't mind hard games as long as it is fair like megaman or donkey kong. I shouldn't have to be forced 100% the game on my first try just to beat the game. It should be optional.
Yeah I played this one 2 years ago and it was great :) I also played Rayman 3 when I was a child, and I wouldn't be able to say if it's as good gameplay-wise but the atmosphere is just so fun and charming! Also thank you, your reviews are great and it's really cool to see someone focusing on platformers :D I would love to see you review Rodea the Sky Soldier (Wii version) someday ^^"
If you dig 6th generation platformers be sure to also check out Nitro Rad! I have not heard of Rodea the Sky Soldier, I'll keep an eye out for it, thanks!
How about American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns reviews? That would be cool. I still maintain that the first game is a much more rewarding and unique experience than the sequel. I think Alice: Madness Returns might actually be a bit of a Rayman 2 rip-off in some aspects.
I have this game on GOG, but unfortunately (Graphics-wise, at least) it's the same as the Dreamcast version. It also has less content, if I remember well
You say it's not a collect-a-thon, but then you describe a lot of stuff that has to be collected, to progress the game, as well as optional collectibles including a new collectible just for this version. Can you elaborate on your definition of collect-a-thon ;so that Rayman doesn't qualify? Is it only the fact that there are fixed end points to each level?
It's a good question and a fair point. I would say when the main component of a game is collecting a certain amount of widgets before a stage can be completed would be a good starting point. Meeting lum requirements that an average gamer would probably obtain through normal gameplay would be on the other end of the spectrum.
I'm just now playing it and I'm still stunned by how beautiful this game looks on DC.
I wish we had Rayman 4
Words cannot describe how much I love the DC version of this game. I honestly think it's one of the best 3D platformers of all time. Great job on this and excellent choice! !
Thanks man! I'm glad the Dreamcast port exists, it's clear the developers put a lot of effort into getting it right :)
instablaster.
Here's a brief summary of them:
N64 & PC: These are the original versions of the game released in 1999.
I forgot to mention that in the PS2 version of Rayman 2, the English voice acting is greatly improved over the PS1 version.
That's disappointing the PS2 port is only 30 frames per second :(
I had the DS Version of Rayman 2 and let's just say you better skip out on this one.
Dreamcast will always be my favorite system.
I still have my launch day console from 9.9.99 :) One of my favorites as well!
I can do one better, I have my launch day Hong Kong one from 98, WITH a null modem block because communists still wanted to outright ban the internet back then. Don't know if having one with that makes it rarer than a launch day japanese one or not.
PS2 still better as is Rayman 2 Revolution
This game is absolutely beautiful.
It is quite lovely!
PC version is identical with N64 version, not DC.
@@raresmacovei8382 nah, the frame rate, resolution and the music suck on n64. No version is identical. I meant that I like the PC and the dreamcast version are my two favourite versions. I wasn't comparing them
@@raresmacovei8382 absolutely not. Pc graphics are far superior and the N64 music is midi
How dare you
Look at the textures on Dreamcast. What a beautiful game. No version looked as good as this one to my knowledge. 480p 16/9. I am currently playing this game but I'm stuck and can't continue without collecting more Lums but that is proving difficult. Not as frustrating as Rayman 1, but it's definitely testing me.
Still a masterpiece, one of the best games of all time. Great video 😊😁🎮👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
implantgames thank you! ;)
I'm not natively English speaking, and I remember playing (and loving) this game a lot as a kid. I thought the gibberish talk was English xD
Although the combat isn´t so good it still never ruined the game for me
One of my favourite games ever created
Great video
You forgot something critical about the music:while rayman 1 just included midi sounds, starting with rayman 2 they used a whole orchestra to record the audio. That was insanea
I've never played Rayman 2, but it's amazing if you're paying attention, you can clearly see the zany style of today's Rayman already. The first game was pretty tame, but from the way he walks, to the exaggerated enemies, Rayman 2 is clearly where today's Rayman style started.
Fantastic video, no platformer has ever held my interest except for this one, being one of my favourite games of all time. Thanks for the awesome analysis
Thanks for the kind words! :D
this is like the second game i ever played after mario 64. and this was the game that got me into games lol
Haha, right on :)
I always fall asleep when I watch your videos because of how relaxing your voice is.
Rayman M, 2 and 3 are my most beloved games of my childhood
PS2 has better graphics and picture quality DC only has more stable FPS nothing else Rayman 2 Revolution is superior version
@@retroboy-fh1ji Rayman Revolution has best soundtrack DC sound picture is not as high quality
i got this game on dreamcast when it came out.. it was PHENOMENAL, but i beat it in like 2 or 3 days so i exchanged it for something else.. i don't know if they still have that type of policy at stores anymore
Yeah I don't think you can return used games anymore, only exchange, if that.
Excellent video Kris. This is still so much fun to play today.
Thanks mate!
The worst part about Rayman 1's having to find all the cages, is the limited lives and continues per save. And many cages require jump testing possible secrets/ death.
Oooooh! 😱❤
I was going to play the PS1 version of this game, but then I saw the Dreamcast version, so now I want this one instead.
Without a doubt.
*Favorites this video* 😍👍
Wise choice. The ps1 version is famous for being the worst port of this game
@@kamileon7065 It underrated game it plays well
Video: The map screen-
Me, who has only played the N64 version: WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT
A game where every level introduces something new and very varied challanges...ubisoft what has become of you?
Just discovered your channel the other day. Enjoying the content!
24:11 I never understood the physics.
The cave of bad dreams soundtrack is an absolute banger
it would be great to see another Rayman game. I feel like i missed out on these because ive never played them.
Just play them. Old games don't cease to exist and are still there to be played. Don't discard the past without experiencing it first. Think of how many games exist. This is why I'm still not up to Wii/PS3 generation yet. Too much to play.
They Re-released this game a lot, I loved the Dreamcast port.
I was happy that you choosed to show off the DC version of the game (as I mentioned to you before. :) )
This game desperately needs a remaster!
Indeed, and Tropical Freeze is also a fantastic game so it deserves all the love it can get ; )
Yeah there's definitely a difference between remasters and lazy ports of games that released only a few years ago with minor tweaks.
Just buy Rayman Revolution on psn.
I always thought Revolution was an interesting port, but I really didn't like the odd changes and additions
MarkProductions OMG YAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS BOIIIIII
The ds port is the best handheld port of Rayman 2 cause we all know it is a NOT the gameboy color version
the dreancast one looks gorgeous!!
i'm only played the psone, n64 and nds ones!
I want a proper remaster of this jewel.
A total remake would be so awesome... like crash and spyro
I'd be down for that!
I wish, Ubisoft doesn't seem to give a toss about Rayman nowadays.
Thanks man and glad to hear it! I wish I had this on the PSX, I wouldn't mind giving the Rayman 2 prototype a spin.
At 6:04 That Gate Looks Cool!
Now This Soundtrack is A BANGER
I grew up with the n64 version, such a great game!
Can you do a forgotten game, The Suffering
As usual great review :( would love to see your review of the playstation (or Saturn) game Exhumed (powerslave)
Kris .... pure awesomeness and I really enjoyed this. Thank you 😊
My pleasure :)
The best game with the best soundtrack
Awesome review btw!
Rayman 3 should be an interesting one to review. Everyone seems to say it's better, but it never gets any love. I wonder why that is...
Thanks for the information about Michel Ancel. Sounds like he was working on Beyond Good & Evil? I kind of want to check that out now.
Rayman 2 has some very memorable set pieces in nearly every stage.
I think Michel Ancel was responsible for designing Rayman's appearance in Rayman 3 and that's it. Everything else was done by a different team.
The atmosphere of rayman 3 is amazing and much better than the second game. for me the story of the second game was better beside that rayman 3 is a superior game in every way.
Didn't even know a DC port exist. The map screen looks so much more interesting on this one.
I think this game is still good. I occasionally take out the good ole N64 now and then to play it. Aside from slippery ice physics for the slide sections the game is pretty solid. I especially like the whole dream like setting the game was going for and how this one guy dreamed up the whole world the game takes place on which makes the robots and other assorted baddies in the game kind of like nightmares in a way.
one of the best platformers of all time, this game should be remastered
First Crash, then Spyro, I think the time is right for Rayman.
Subzone right?
Subzone ohhh it would be amazing to play Rayman on the go, specially if Ubisoft take advantage of the Switch hardware!
I have it for Dreamcast and 3ds.
AND I LOVE IT !!
I can't believe you didn't mention Rayman's ledge grabbing mechanics.
This game is my childhood 😍 (PC version) It was fantastic platformer with great atmosphere 😀
Are you by any chance planning to review Rayman 3 aswell?
Rayman 3 is next!
Love this game. In the middle of playing it now on my N64, but this video has me seriously considering buying a Dreamcast. Any tips?
12:27 rayman doesnt take fall damage so he cant go "splat"
(Also has a few secret multiply games if you go back on the first map there's a secret room with mini games)
Btw I noticed some cut scenes from 5:02 that I don’t remember being in the Dreamcast version. Did you use the once from the PS2 version? Or maybe the Pal versions don’t have those.
Glad you enjoyed the video! All of the footage is from the Dreamcast version, it was English though so maybe it was cut out of other territories?
Well I do live in Sweden but the game is English otherwise. But it is the PAL version, maybe it came out first (Ubisoft is a french studio after all) so maybe it was included just for the NTSC regions. Now I want replay it all to find out xD
Great review! I can't wait to play this one, though most likely I'll be getting the PS2 version since I have a PS2, not a Dreamcast, and far as I can tell, it stands alongside the DC version as the best version of the game.
Angel Molina
I'd say the PS2 is a close second.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The ps2 version is the second from the worst one it has a bad frame rate. rayman 2 on ps2 is almost uplayable
Wait a minute, what's that version of the game? On N64 or on pc I don't remember climbing the tower where the water rise at the beginning of the video, plus the world map wasn't the same at all.
Oh I get it, Dreamcast version of the game.
Evil Twin is a game I would want you to cover
What system?
ofc its still good
Can we talk about how many consoles rayman 2 is on?
DjKiwi i have alot of versions because alot of versions of Rayman 2 have exclusive content like the PS1 Rayman 2 2D prototype ;)
DjKiwi
Consoles:
PC
N64
PS1
PS2
DC
Portables:
GBC
iOS
NDS
3DS
The Dreamcast is usually considered the best version, with the PS2 being a close second. The portables are all okay at best (besides the GBC I am not familiar with it, I just know it exists, but I do know it is essentially a completely different game). The N64 and PC versions are considered to be good and the PS1 is the worst of the home console versions.
That was more consoles than I thought there was
It's weird Rayman 3 got an HD upgrade for PSN/Xbox but not Rayman 2.
Thanks man! The plum was a lot better on my second play through, still clumsy though, especially when you need to smash through a door.
Ever gonna try Rayman 3?
Rayman 3 is next!
Just a heads up, but there's an 'HD' version of Rayman 3 that has a lot of annoying bugs!
As much as i loved (and still love) Rayman 2, i was quite disappointed with Rayman 3. It seemed contrived, without all the exploration, and the atmospheric, magical environments of 2 just weren't there. I haven't played it since it came out though, so maybe i should give it another shot.
I'd say definitely give it another shot, there's a lot more 'magic' and atmosphere in it than you'd initially expect!
MarkProductions - I will! I'm currently about halfway through Rayman 2 on my N64 (just got it HDMI modded, and it's beautiful), but i ordered Rayman 3 for my GameCube last night after this discussion, so i'll be getting back to it very soon.
one of the best games ever!
The best version is by far the PS2 one, called "Rayman Revolution". You should play it even if you've completed the original game. It adds an overworld that connects all levels, updates the graphics, refines the combat system, adds new bosses... Just play it and see it for yourself!
I'll track it down one of these days, thanks for the recommendation!
PSX version is also good.
No, lol
I played it on the N64. Was great😎
the level select screen wasnt on the ps2 version
This was my first console game on ps1 I know it’s the worst version but was still awesome
Ironically, the PS1 version has the best final boss.
ThePreciseClimber Really?
Hell Yea it is!
Also more bosses, more innovative and challenging than bosses from 2, and what is great, you can repeat battles with them what was not possible in Great Escape (at least on PC)
Looking forward fot analise of Rayman 3 ;)
Well is was one of the best platformer games on the Dreamcast
There was only one port that actually added new features, Rayman 2: Revolution on the PS2, best played with the 60FPS cheat code in an overclocked emulator since it only runs at 30 otherwise. Rayman DS was just a buggy port of the N64 version and Rayman 3D was a port or the Dreamcast version without the minigames and with a bug requiring the player to use glitches to get a yellow lum. I believe the mobile port is the same but with the glitch fixed.
the story continues in rayman 3 for the GBA
Right on!
I played this for the first time a couple of years ago and I was completely absorbed by it! In my opinion this is one of the best games on the Dreamcast!
I'm a bit disappointed I didn't play this game 18 years ago :)
It absolutely is.
TODAY THIS GAME WILL GET 0/10 BUT THIS GAME WILL ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE IN MY HEARTH!
sry fo capitals
I forgive you!
The Ps2 version has more levels, soundtrack, and other extras, but seems so unfinished compared to the Dreamcast version
It's really fact Ubi Soft wasn't used Emotion Engine a difficult CPU to work with at time when it got released not as difficult as super difficult PS3 Cell Processor
Its a good game,i played as a kid,but Rayman Origins and Legends are WAY better
Nah
Wait, so Razarbead lived and got away...COULD HE RETURN!?
I'm surprised he hasn't!
Yes!! Rayman 2 & 3 are masterpieces.
and what about 1 ??
hiden name
One is among the best 2D platformers of the 32-bit era. But it's distinct enough that it usually is separated from two and three.
64 bits* and for me they're all very different but somehow similar
I wouldn't call Rayman 1 a masterpiece.
hiden name Rayman 1 is fun up until you realise that you cant beat the game unless you find all the electoons.
It also has less content, if I remember well
Rayman 3 next?
Yep!
Revolution is best port feels like Rayman 2.5
One of the best games in its genre.
Meeting lum requirements that an average gamer would probably obtain through normal gameplay would be on the other end of the spectrum.
maybe you can talk about the spyro games in the future or the legacy of kain series?
Spyro is on my radar..
