Edwin Starr’s military service in the United States Army was for three years, where he was posted mostly in Europe. -The biggest hit of Starr's career, which cemented his reputation, was the Vietnam War protest song "War" (1970).[1] Starr's intense vocals transformed a Temptations album track into a number one chart success, which spent three weeks in the top position on the U.S. Billboard charts, an anthem for the antiwar movement and a cultural milestone that continues to resound in movie soundtracks. -Starr remained a hero on England's northern soul circuit and moved to England in 1983, continuing to live there for the remainder of his life. He based himself in the English Midlands, living for many years at Pooley Hall at Polesworth, Warwickshire, before moving to Bramcote in Nottinghamshire.

Great performance by Edwin Star, but let us not forget the words were written by Norman Witfield and Barrett Strong. I have loved this since I first heard it in '69.
If anyone ever lets out both heart and soul to the max in a song, then this one is it. With the turbulent times it was a no brainer that this would hit #1 in 1970 (Aug 29th for three weeks) I was too young to be a participant in Vietnam but my brother was over there (survived the war)

what funky way to protest against war! 👍👍👍
And today, November 17th 2024, we can shout it out again.... war what is it good for, absolutely nothing
It's 2024 and still cranking this tune!!! War, what is it good for?????? Absolutely nothin', that's what!!! One day we all will be in peace and no more war! :)
I first heard this song as a little kid, and it knocked me out. I knew its words are the truth. Edwin Starr sings it with such intense fervor and SOUL!
I landed at JFK on June 29th, 1969 to star my life in America; . The Viet Nam was was raging on and protests against it were happening all over the U.S.A. This came out then and it was very popular. I never forgot it. I like it, especially the lyrics...very true ! Today I heard it again while driving. It brought back memories of those days..
Minor correction: Edwin's version was released in June 1970 according to Wikipedia, so the title of this TH-cam video is inaccurate. th-cam.com/video/01-2pNCZiNk/w-d-xo.html
NEVER GET TIRED LISTENING TO THIS CLASSIC.
God Bless this man, his message has reached millions!
Sure hope it reaches this generation before Biden and other globalists bring about WW3!

@@johnomalley7211 Where have been hiding? "War" was an antiwar hit during the tumultuous 70s, l know, and l remember, lol
@@jdb10715 what does globalism have to do with anything?
You can't beat this song. I played it again and again when I was a kid. It was on a Motown greatest hits album we got for Christmas in the 60's
What a great song for the times right now
Rest in Peace, Edwin Your music and wisdom will live on forever. Shame on the disservice this video does to him with the unfixed phase distortions left in this masterpiece.
2021 and the lyrics are just as powerful as they were back in the day…
History repeats itself constantly and Man still hasn't connected the dots.
What goes around (War) comes around. PEACE
Great performance by Edwin Star, but let us not forget the words were written by Norman Witfield and Barrett Strong. I have loved this since I first heard it in '69.
If anyone ever lets out both heart and soul to the max in a song, then this one is it. With the turbulent times it was a no brainer that this would hit #1 in 1970 (Aug 29th for three weeks) I was too young to be a participant in Vietnam but my brother was over there (survived the war)
even after all these years, the words in that song still rings true today, those words are as strong now as they have ever been, my grandad was a ww2 vet, and one of my uncles was a Vietnam vet, so to all you vets out there, thankyou from one grateful American, thankyou for my freedom, my right to choose, freedom isn't free, you will always have my support...PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!

I had the great pleasure meet him in 1986 several times after his gigs in Birmingham England this is so true today put down the guns feed the hungry rip Eddie
Great song. I was in Vietnam when it came out. It was an immediate favorite by a great many of us.
This song is one for eternity! He is on the list as one of America's heroes! Love from Canada.
Vietnam vet here (grunt) Side note, while in Basic Training the Drill Instructors would play this full blast during morning chow in the mess hall. I found out about war a few months later.
Times will never change. What a stage performance!
His voice is soooo awesome
Not enough world leaders have heard this song....
WarrenRCG well politics is very complex and their are lots of subtleties the leader has keys metaphorically that are his keys to power like police chiefs and generals advisors treasurers and businesses with influence and the leader will do what he wants but eventually he has to keep the keys happy which can mean that against their better judgment they will be forced into a war
Did you steal the "keys" from CGP Grey?
This is 1 of their better songs HOWEVER THE TEMPTATIONS DIDN'T DO A BAD SONG
WarrenRCG specially trump
that's because they care only about two things=money and their ego!
Listening to this masterpiece today on the 3rd of April 2022. 👏
