Am I missing something? De Ligt’s performances on the pitch haven’t been the issue at any of the clubs he’s been at. Man United can afford his wages since his stocks are somewhat low, and they’ve just lost Martial and Varane off the wage bill, and are likely to lose Greenwood, Sancho this summer too. Casemiro, Lindelof, and possibly Rashford next summer if not this one too. He’s still really young, younger than Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Wan Bissaka, Dalot and Lisandro. The only defenders they have who are younger than him are Malacia (by five days), and Kambwala. He knows the manager, has played his best football under him, and they evidently trust one another. He’s played with the goalkeeper before too, and with Onana, Lisandro, and De Ligt, you’d have a fluid, ball playing back three with enough athleticism to compete. It’s a good signing, the only real caveat is the injury situation, but I’d wager that Man United are working on that as much as anything at the moment, since it was their biggest issue last season too.

To be fair, Juventus' decline had been looming ever larger since their failure in the UCL final and Bayern's internal problems have been covered up for years by their success on the pitch, it's only a matter of time before these 2 giants crashed. Now, it's finally exposed for all to see. I've argued with an idiot about how "Kane is not the bane of the problem at Bayern" and this seems to be much the same case. De Ligt is not the true cause behind the failure of these projects. Varane has been overplayed for years and he's pretty much just waiting for a string of injuries to take the quality out of him.
I can't say much about his Juventus stint, but he was far from being any problem at Bayern. Last season, he was arguably our best player, and we had only gotten worse due to our midfield and our lack of a proper #9. This season was a disaster, however, we didn't have a proper DM, our wingers would be horrendously out of form if they weren't in the hospital, and Alphonso Davies dropped bad game after bad game. de Ligt really only struggled with injuries in the beginning of the new year, in which it would take him a while to ease back into the team as Dier has performed very well and Upa had yet to lose his mind. Should he ideally be starting every game, yes, but to say that he's 'failed' under us...?
How are we even buying all these players, if United's budget is 50-100M? Preseason starts after tomorrow and we have not made a single sale from the first squad. This looks depressing summer window again!
