I spent countless hours with this game as a teenager, love it to bits. Now this is a NFS that could use a remaster, unlike Hot Pursuit from 2010.
You can turn rubber banding off, in this game, its called catchup in settings
only in single races. that 6lap clk gtr event is a totally abuse
I will continue to support these modern-retro reviews until the day I die and you are always the man to go to for this stuff. Some of these videos are like pure injections of nostalgia, and educational to boot. Keep up the great work!
This game is the Holy grail of NFS games. Is pure gold. Pure classic racing.

Going back to play this after the modern NFS games... the physics are so good in this! Really good sense of weight, momentum and distinct sense of when individual tyres a spinning or skidding. Each car feels unique too.
I was amazed when I played this game again for the first time in over a decade how well it aged. One of the few games from my childhood that feels (and even looks) just as good as I remembered.

@@indigomarine91 Not in the PS2 version, no. The basic reasoning is that this was intended to be a slightly downgraded port of the game, with the Xbox, GCN and PC versions of the game being the ones to grab.

The only thing that bugs me about this game is how long the races seem to last for. Some races are 4 laps, and that can take up to 30 minutes in some of the starter cars. For me it makes it difficult to get into because I get bored.

One of the greatest racing games ever made
I recently finished the PC version and I´m currently playing the PS2 version (emulated though) and yeah, the PS2 version is the way to go, the only thing it lacked compared to the pc version, was the "mirrored tracks" that really stretched the track variety a lot, but on the bright side, the PS2 has the Desert tracks.
Oh, and the soundtrack is an absolut banger!

There are mirrored tracks (or at least reversed). They're the II tracks
Two things that frustrated me, at least in the PS2 version are one, the time trial events as the time they give you leave very little margin for error and later events ended up coming down to the wire. Second, is the traffic as most of the time they would kamikaze right into you, leaving you with little or no room to move out of the way.

This is probably my favorite racing game of all time, i dont know what it is but i never get sick of this game. i always come back to it every couple of months. MOstly play the ps2 version on a pc emulator now a days tho.. thats the best way in my opinion.

My buddies and I in elementary school would go trick or treating and come back home and play this game. We would bet our favorite candies and play a track with unlimited laps and see how long you could survive. Whoever lasted longest would win the pot hahah loved this game. Great memories
Best vehicle physics ever in a racing game without relying too much on hyperrealism, when it comes to arcade / simulation hybrid physics, this was perfect. To this day, there is no other racing game that can match this, not even Gran Turismo 3, even though that was a great game on its own, I would kill to see a remake of this game with more cars, or even a spiritual successor that uses this exact same handling model, but modernized for today's standards, much like with Tony hawk 1+2. I hope there's a AAA developer with a huge budget that is up to that challenge, because this is one of the best 3D race games of all time that deserves a lot of recognition.
Black box was foolish to not make a pc version of their work instead of Seattle. Imagine this masterpiece with mods!!!
They rebooted Hot Pursuit & remastered it btw

Yeah, it was a very good addition to the NFS series! I was paying this on PC and later on PS2 as well.
I remember that fully installing time for this game on pc was around 15 seconds, it was so quick, that I always thought, that something is wrong, but it wasn't)

after Most Wanted 2005, games like Undercover (i wouldn't recommend it though because it's bad), Hot Pursuit 2010, Most Wanted 2012, Rivals AND Heat had a big emphasis on police chases.
If ever a review of Need for Speed Undercover is done, please consider splitting it into two since the PlayStation 2 version of that game is different from the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 version and (in my opinion) much better.
@@dynastymusou8906 Weird. Lots of people say that PS2 version is half-baked, while on the other hand people such as you say it's better. I don't know what to believe anymore.
I still have this game on the original Xbox...one of the best NFS games.
Still my favorite NFS game. Played it to death on PC. Having seen your review, I have to say that I prefer the PC menus and UI

I remember seeing the fast forward track camera for the first time on PS2 for the first time, was the coolest thing ever. Im surprised that feature was never implemented in the PC version.

I loved playing this game back in the PS2 days. I tried playing the PS2 version on PC using PCSX2 emulator & Xbox 360 controller, it works fine and the game looks beautiful at 1080p.
My friend had this on the PS2, we had a lot of fun playing both single player and split screen. I also really enjoyed the PC version though, and would love to replay it. Last time I tried, I couldn't get it to run on my Windows 10 pc, despite numerous visits to PCGamingWiki and other such troubleshooting sites.
The ports can't even compare. The ps2 version is a masterpiece. Music, visuals, speed, sound effects. One of the all time best experiences in action arcade racing. Right up there with wipeout xl, waverace, and Mario kart 64.

You know, I vaguely remember seeing an arcade version of this as a kid. I think it was called, Need for Speed GT(?), but I could be wrong.

It's based on the EA seattle version, which is disappointing to say the least.

Graphically, it is inferior (PC port looks kinda cartoony and not in a good way IMO). The cop mode is also different because on PC you have to keep hitting the racers until they run out of "health". I never played the PS2, so those are all the differences I can tell. It's not bad, just different.

I have this for my original Xbox and gamecube
When Blockbuster was still around, I rented for GC, later Xbox, liked it so much that I a bought the PC version--still have the DVD but it doesn't work on Win7 or Win10. This PS2 version is a bit different, but all 4 are fun to play.

The ps2 version is so much better than any other. It feels like a totally different game. I can't believe how they managed to ruin the other versions
This game was amazing, the cops were hard as hell on the highest difficulty. Helicopters throwing missiles, dropping bombs, it was intense. I think only most wanted 2005 cops were as good as these 2002 hot pursuit 2 cops.

The PS2 version _cannot_ be the best version when the Xbox version allows you to play your _own music_ you added to the system. That alone makes it superior.
One cool feature can’t make up for less fun gameplay.

@@aurelios69 The PlayStation 2 version did not feature a career mode. Instead, there is a point system where cars are purchased from winning races. Points are determined by laps led and finishing position. In the Championship and Hot Pursuit trees, extra points are awarded if a medal is won. If the tree is completed, extra bonus races are unlocked. These races include the hardest competitors and the hardest courses. Did not have a multiplayer online mode Hell you gonna sit here and tell me it was better
