We have a 1-year-old Black Australorp named Onyx. They lose that cream/white and become solid black with dark brown eyes. Black feathers have a green iridescent sheen. We love this hen because she is quiet (no egg song) although she's near the top of the pecking order. She lays medium lighter brown eggs with heavy bloom, so they appear pink. She had a mini-molt at 9/10 months old and stopped laying for 2 months while she lost only 10% of her feathers.

Awww, I love the Golden-laced Wyandotte!! I looked for them last year (I like pairs, not the minimum that most places require), but never saw any in the local stores. I still have my Australorp that I got when I first got chickens.... about 5 or 6 years ago. Surprisingly, she still goes broody!! AND.... really TO MY SURPRISE, she hatched TWO batches last summer!!! Bless her heart. Sooo, I bought 2 more Australorps (baby chicks) last summer. I'm anxious to see if they will go broody this year...or if it's still too soon. I love for my flock to be a mixed breed. I love seeing their uniqueness. I have one hen that was hatched here last summer.... she looks like a Barred Rock, but she has feathers on her feet (got that from her momma) & the little poof on her head. I love it!! 🙂

Murray McMurray identifies which of their hens lay good, better, and best. I like to purchase “best” layers to get more eggs throughout the year. We live in a high desert of southern Utah and our last average frost is May 20. We have cold winters, but the hens continue to lay well. I have 31 hens, and so far in February they have laid 31 eggs twice (100%), 30 eggs four times, 29 eggs six times, 28 eggs five times, 27 eggs once, 26 eggs twice, and between 24-15 the early days of Feb. The breed is Amber Stars. Other “best” layers are Red Stars, White Leghorns, and Black Australorps. So, if you’re interested in getting more eggs, you may want to try hens that lay more. (I might call the Ameraucana “Betsy” (for Betsy Ross), but I usually don’t name my hens, occasionally a rooster. (Sorry this is so long.)

Instead of the Sharpie marker, you should use either a pencil or a crayon. Those won't penetrate the shell, but the marker has liquid & can penetrate the shell.

Love watching your videos. Last year we got baby chicks for the very first time. We got 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes in that batch. We named them Lacy and Daisy. So hard to tell them apart except Daisy has a little more gold on her tail feathers. Our next batch of chicks will be next year and hope to try Australorps and Ameraucanas. So I am very interested to see how you like yours.

I'm downsizing my flock now.... actually just delivered 11 to a friend who lives down the road....& that still leaves me TWENTY-ONE & a rooster!! I MIGHT eat 2 eggs in a week's time, & live in a very rural area & don't want to mess with selling eggs, sooo, I decided that I needed to cut it down a bit. I sure hope I can stick to my guns when the chicks start arriving at the stores!! 😂
I have 8 turkeys also, & am going to re-home a pair of those as well. I live alone, & it's just way too expensive to keep that many when I'm not utilizing their benefits. 🙂

I love buff orpington roosters and hens. The roosters are not overly ruff on the hens. The roosters are not aggressive.
I have the same type of platform for my waterers. 😊
I plan on getting 15 more orpingtons. They are great in our Michigan winter. I had two partridge rock hen sit on eggs last year. I cant wait for the hend to start getting broody this year. ❤

Chickens for 3 years & no hen has hatched any eggs? Obsurd! lol “I’ve had chickens 8 months & 3 hens hatched out eggs for me” ? From my experience the lil I have. My silky hen will go broody with 12-16 eggs silkies are one of the Broodiest chickens there are. She just hatched 14 out of 15 of her own eggs that are about 6 weeks old. & last fall or end of summer 2 of my 3 golden laced hens went broody together “not a very broody breed I’ve heard but “1st one had to fight off my red highlander hens from the nest & called for backup?” lol but sure enough both went broody together side-by-side in the corner of my garage and we’re laying on 24 eggs. Occasionally took turns sitting while one went and use the bathroom or ate or what not but the majority of the time they were side-by-side, and is a pretty amazing experience really. Of course I did the incubator thing because I wanted to see it take place with poor results in comparison to the silky hen alone. That recently hatched out as much as 2 of my incubators combined in the coldest month of the year at that lol. Blew my mind already commented b4 but thought I’d add a lil more what I experienced I guess lol. But yeah, I’m thinking because of this small experience. If you put roughly a dozen to 16 eggs in a nest one of the hens are going to be almost forced by nature to go broody. 🤔

Glad to see you getting more chicks, I have Blue Laced Red Wyandotte flock and cant wait to start incubating soon, just a tip, when marking the eggs with dates use a pencil rather than a sharpie just incase the marker leaks through the shell, because of the heat and humidity of the hens body, Good luck

Dang & reds aren’t that nice either lol I bet you have your hands full over there. I have 9 Highlander hens, 3 golden laced Polish, 3 white leg horns, & 1 “stray bard rock?” That found its way here somehow lol my golden laced crested Polish Rooster “Rambo” & 3 half Silky half polish pullets that all run around together. And the Highlander red hens are the meanest out of all mine by far. For the most part, most of the hens will nitpick a little bit here and there, but the red hens will straight up brawl. It’s hard to tell really if it’s two or three different ones or usually the same one because they look so much alike. And the more I see different ones do it. Smdh
