I had chickens all my life, I can promise you, the feeling of a the first egg from a batch of chicks never goes away 😂. We are always like “no way! They laid an egg!!” It’s so funny

My dad had a cow called Big Red.....She calved five times with out help...Number six, she bleed to death calving in the lower field, not the maternity pasture. Dad was devastated......Farmers go through a lot of pain with the animals but that's life ...... Blessings darlings from Granny Linda in OZ....

@@AcresOfAdventure This was my 1st time seeing your channel. I subscribed immediately. My reasoning was you are so comfortable in front of the channel & the editing was good. It’s rare to find a new ( to me ) channel. I’ll be doing a lil binge watching over the next few days. Can’t wait to see how y’all grow. My only advice is to be consistent. I’m sure you’ve seen CogHill farm. I love their channel & their consistency. I know what day & time I can expect to see new content. I know it’s not always possible but if you see the million sun channels it’s mostly someone who’s passionate about what they are doing & have a set schedule. Sorry I didn’t mean to go on so long but I really want to see y’all succeed. Good Luck

Great video! I was so sad too when your baby goats died 😢 WE recently bought a bottle fed baby goat and lamb, and I love them so much! We have a second lamb coming in another week. Bottle feeding them is so sweet, I will be so very sad if nature was to take any of my animals, but I will never stop trying to raise them.

You came to the same conclusion many have, including me and my wife same journey just different story we all need to rely more on ourselves and neighbors instead of relying on the grocery store which we all have seen can end in disaster. We wish to have several acres like you one day but for now we have a 10,900 sqft lot that we use and my uncle 15 acres for meat birds and hopefully in future Cow and Goat meat production. Welcomed our first born daughter into the world this year 27 week old is now 5 weeks corrected and thriving. God bless you and your family and thank you for making these videos cataloging your journey.

You crushed it with the intro.
I've been building a homestead and I would die to have just 1% of what some people on YT have in equipment and resources. Doing it on my budget it will take me the rest of my life to leave my kids something good enough to start off with and grow from.
The carbon footprint of the "look at me" homesteaders is as big as the footprint homesteading is supposed to eliminate.

We have lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, snap peas, zucchini, herbs, green onions, and I’m trying my hand at celery and potatoes. I’m getting ready to plant cucumbers, carrots, green beans and more lettuce as well as more herbs. It has been nice to eat what we are growing. - Sue in AZ

I hear you!! I started out just wanting to grow a few veggies in my backyard. What seemed simple, later required me to think through the growing process of what grew and what didn't (you learn to let go in order to move on). But, I had the time of my life just being able to walk to the backyard and plan a meal. I ate better and got a lot of sunshine!! I'm now into my second year and expanded my beds for even more food. It's a great feeling... so I hear you!!

Great video and summary of the adventure. I’ve gardened and preserved vegetables for years. During Covid I learned how to can meat. Last year we hatched our own chicks and now have 22 hens and are down to three roosters from 8 (yes we got more than a 50/50). We have processed 4 of the roosters now. However we recently hatched 15 of our own chickens offspring so the cycle continues. We get enough eggs for every family member and friends. Starting the planning process to move to larger acreage for retirement years. Self sufficient is a must in this day and time but it is definitely a process that takes time. It’ll probably be a 7-10 year transition but we look forward to spending more time doing this lifestyle and less in the rat race of commercialism. Keep up the good work. I wish I could have started young like you and raised my children in this life but better late than never.

I really liked your video. You touched some points that are still difficult for me. The processing of an animal you grow. I like most people I’m used to thinking of them as pets, but I really would like to do it as a business. I also relate to your triumphs and failures of gardening, which amounts to joy and learning. Gardening “failures”make me more interested in trying again , not discouraged. Great video

We moved in to our new land just a month ago. Right now it's the peak of El Niño (extreme summer) in our tropical country, so we really cannot do much planting with the very limited water around. On parts of the day when the heat is tolerable, we work on our swales, so when the rain comes, our land would be able to harvest lots of rainwater. We also start making carbonized rice hull to amend our garden soil, and gather all the dry leaves and twigs around the property to mulch our first garden.
The current time is testing our patience, but I'm super excited for the first rain to come and allow me to finally start planting!

Amazing video Tom. We started our journey around the same time and I feel everything you said. I lost a lot of chickens over the years and have had to put pigs down because nobody wanted them or they wouldn't get on the trailer to go to freezer camp and they were getting too big and dangerous to keep. It's been rough but I wouldn't change the experience for anything. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us, it really means a lot when we are ready to tear it all down. Then we come and see a beautiful family share their struggles with this lifestyle. I hope that the next set of goats you get will thrive under your care(I am sure they will!). I would love to see you raise another pair of pigs. You said some real truths about pigs that most people don't realize are truths. They are very smart and clean animals. I don't know why your pigs stunk, mine smelled better than my dogs! I would love to keep a few as pets, especially the Mangalitsa. My sow was half Mangalitsa, she was such a sweetheart. Anyway I am rambling. Thanks again for sharing my friend and God bless you and your family this year with a bountiful harvest!

We were in the same situation, but instead of getting the house, we were never able to and because of an unforeseeable expense we were no longer able to purchase a home for ourselves, plus every time we found a home it was infested with termites or they were trying to hide something that was going to be a headache later on down the road. Luckily within the past year we have found a home with nice landlords out in the country that are allowing us to do what we want. Hopefully someday we will own property, but for now we have to deal with the cards we've been dealt and thankfully we've gained new friends in the process.

All that said, we are new to having a dog on our homestead. It looks like you had larger dogs before getting your chickens. What advice would you give us? Our dog is a big 80# loving guy that we adopted from the shelter a couple weeks ago. But he chased the chickens on day one. Hi, I’m from northern Ontario, we got pretty much the same weather as Michigan. I bought a large chicken feeder, it fits a whole bag of feed (20kg) it was a life saver during winter, and I’m sure it will be during rain season.

Nice job. Just a thought, I quarter my chickens. They stack in the freezer better...

Rabbits are also easy and breed fast. Silverfox ate amazing meat and pelts

Where do you recommend we buy chickens? I’m in MN.
Can you do a video on supply needed for chickens?

This is a very nice video. To be honest, I have been trying to move forward in this path, but the expenses are prohibitive. I watched your video and couldn't help wondering how did you do it financially.

    Great video!
I hope you don’t mind me asking but did you ever find out what happened to your goats?
I experienced something similar and I think it got bloat from eating too much hay. The vet would have known if it was bloat though as their tummy puffs up.
