- We’re big fans of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N hot hatch, because it’s about the most fun you can have in an EV. Fake gears, 10-second bursts of extra power, and a drift mode, all sound like gimmicks, but together they make for one engaging hot hatch. But what if the 5 N was turned up to 11?
Enter the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup race car. It keeps the production 5 N’s battery and motors - so it’s still good for 641bhp. But out goes anything superfluous, and in comes a roll cage, a racing seat, slicks, and a whole lot of aero add-ons. Weight goes down 10%, grip goes way up!
All the novel gimmicks - like N Drift Optimiser - are gone, because this is a focused race car. Yet at the same time, Hyundai wants this to be an affordable race car, so prices will start under €100,000.
It’s starting a one-make championship in Korea, too, and it’ll be a live test-bed as Hyundai hopes to find a path towards making electric racing fun. Teams will be able to choose the sound their cars make, and taking an idea from gaming, race officials can punish you mid-race with less power for over-aggressive driving.

And lighter fater model will come from hyundai soon.
They criticized the IONIQ 5n because of its fake sound, but they also cursed the IONIQ 5n Cup Car because it has no sound. For your information, the Cup Car will be provided with special sounds for each vehicle. It's an incredibly strong sound.
If you win in the iN racing you can your sound which is developed by Hyundai.
When I first saw this Ioniq N in person I felt in love. I want one!!! But then I saw this race car! Want it even more!!!! 🤤

When the MK1 GTI came out I wanted one so badly. Eventually I had an 84. Loved it. Wore it out. I want an Ionic 5 N the same way.

Engineers are from Hyundai, not from BMW
Hyundai Engineers are mostly Korean. Too much praise to the BMW for only one guy. Sure , he did advise Hyundai when it comes to N brand performance, but other than that, all the Engineering are from the Korean Engineering center located in Namyang, Korea. They deserves more praise.
Hyundai are awful, the battery breaks very easily and it costs $50,000 to replace, ugly design, and awful mileage.

One thing I do love about Formula is the length of the races. They're more condensed so you have to do more in less time.

My god, that styling is 10/10. I just love hwo amazing the Ioniq 5 looks. I own one too, very comfortable ride. Best car i've ever had.
If I were the organizer of the game, I would only give the first place a wonderful exhaust sound. It's a kind of loot. So that even those who watch the game can tell who the champion is right away. Men are crazy about such medals, even if they are not worth it.
The higher the number of wins, the louder the sound will be. Hahaha.
From what I heard, the 21-inch tire was difficult to obtain for racing and expensive, so I chose 18 inches because it didn't fit the n-cup, a popular race, and when I installed 18 inches, it interfered with pure brakes and changed brakes.
I think that's due to performance reasons. 18inch wheels are much much lighter than 21s. Up to a point that even on a public road switching from 21inch to 18inch gives 10% of range
I guess:
For using various racing tires, for lowering hight, for more high safety by limiting top speed and by increasing acceleration. 10% of mass is reduced so the drag time (0-100km/h) may be 3.0x seconds.
18inches is the bigger slicks you can get in most brands. And it is a “cheap” tire. Bigger than that I only know one or two brands from US.
To all that don’t understand; the sound is not only for amusement e.g. most others that only makes some noises. Here it’s helping on the racetrack to have hints on the right speed etc. Had experience on Anneau du Rhin with my Kia EV6 AWD and was highly concentrating on HUD and track markers to get the right speed. Without serious sound generator in the 5N it’s harder to go to the limits and you mostly are too fast!😅

And imagine if we’d always had only EVs, and then someone came along and said they had this great invention, and instead of electric motors at the wheels we’d have this lump of machinery in the car, and we’d have a tank of flammable liquid which gives off explosive vapours, and the machinery would suck it in, and then a spark would make it explode, and the force of that would move this, which would move that, which would turn these other things, and we’d make the wheels go round that way. Of course, all these parts going in and out and up and down and round and round would be noisy and vibrate, but don’t worry about that. And of course we’d need lots of adjustable gearing as it doesn’t produce much torque over most of its speed range, but don’t worry about that. And of course it will produce noxious fumes, but don’t worry about that. And if we do a really good job we’ll only waste about ⅔ of the energy in the flammable liquid, but don’t worry about that. Don’t worry about any of those things because it is *BETTER*.

What do people not like about the racing in formula e? The Gen2 era was basically faultless for track action, even if some of the courses were questionable... And the Gen3 peloton of insanitygives you lap after lap of going three wide into every corner and single drivers overtaking more cars than entire F1 seasons. I don't think this Hyundai has much going on that the I pace didn't, it's even a similar size, and size kills great racing at anything except the widest largest tracks. It's cool and I want one regardless

I disagree with you about extreme E, if EV motorsport is going to work then it’s in the short run motorsports like rally or motor cross. And I think extreme E works really well
I agree about the rallycross but the potential option for longer run motorsports would be quick swap batteries. I'm not sure if anyone's dome it yet but if not surely someone's working on it.
Extreme E is a monumental failure...no one is interested in investing in it (from a sponsorship perspective) as there's no real viewership and the races are absolutely boring to watch (the tracks and the racing formula are wrong and not entertaining to watch).
@@DavidChong the Nio EP9 has batteries that have to be taken out of the car to be charged so theoretically if you had a second charged battery then the tech is there. i dont know how long swapping the battery takes though
I can tell you straight now that the rallying community do not want EV. The sound is more important in railing than any form of circuit racing.

Have we started to redefine what a hot hatch is now? Because this car is big, basically crossover size. For a frame of reference, I drive a Mk7.5 GTI, which is considered standard size hatchback, and parked next the normal Ioniq 5 and it looked the size of a Tiguan next to my car.

Ok, for 100k, I'm waiting for someone with the disposable income to buy one of these, strip all the electrical goblins out of it, throw a 1000hp K24 into it with AWD, further reducing the weight, and seeing how good this thing really is lol.... I mean, it looks really good,, love those headlights, hell, maybe a nice LS based 427ci twin turbo monster with AWD and 2000hp 😅

And it’s the sole reason This was build in the first place. But the championship collapsed before this saw the light of day. Leaving them with an expensive car and program, but no where to go with it.

First, Ioniq 5 is not hot hatch, that's an SUV!
Second, the insurance companies are writting EVs off after relatively minor damage because of the risk of the battery thermal runaway (massive fire). How do you think it's gonna work in wheel to wheel racing?
