  • Interview with Norwegian alt-pop artist AURORA.
We chat about connecting with fans, how her songs evolve and what success really means.
Mixing frosty electronic textures, spare beats, and clear, emotive vocals, singer/songwriter AURORA works in a similar dark pop milieu as artists like Oh Land, Lykke Li, and Lorde. Her debut album, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend, went to number one in her native Norway upon its release in 2016. The follow-ups Step 1: Infections of a Different Kind and Step 2: A Different Kind of Human reached the Top Ten. She went on to contribute songwriting and vocals to the Chemical Brothers album No Geography and sang ethereal backup soprano to Idina Menzel on the soundtrack to Disney's Frozen II (and live on the 2020 Oscars broadcast) by the arrival of her mythology-inspired fourth album, The Gods We Can Touch, in 2022.
Born Aurora Aksnes in Stavanger, AURORA began writing music and lyrics at a young age, eventually releasing her debut single, "Awakening," as a 17-year-old in late 2013. Honing her live show and building on the momentum from the song, she issued the follow-up single "Under Stars" in late 2014. She signed with American label Glassnote and U.K.-based Decca for her debut EP, Running with the Wolves, which arrived in the first half of 2015. The singer/songwriter then came to further prominence after covering the Oasis track "Half the World Away" for the 2015 John Lewis Christmas ad before following up with her debut full-length, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend, in 2016. Led by the European hit "Runaway," the album charted across Western Europe, topping the chart in Norway and reaching the Top 30 in the U.K., as well as cracking the Billboard 200 in the States. The follow-up, 2018's Step 1: Infections of a Different Kind, saw her integrating more down-to-earth themes, including politics and sexuality. It returned her to Norway's Top Ten, peaking at number seven.
Stepping away from her solo work, AURORA entered the studio with the Chemical Brothers, contributing to their ninth album, No Geography, which was released in April 2019. Her third LP, Step 2: A Different Kind of Human, followed on Glassnote and Decca in June of that year. In December, her profile received another boost when she sang on the song "Into the Unknown" from the soundtrack to Disney's Frozen II. She later appeared alongside Idina Menzel to perform the song at the Academy Awards in 2020. That year, she also released tracks including "The Secret Garden," the title song to a U.K. film adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett novel, and "Stjernestøv" ("Stardust") for an NRK TV series of the same name. The latter became her second Top 20 single in Norway, following 2015's "Runaway."
Throughout early 2021, AURORA delivered a series of EPs as a thank-you to fans for "Runaway" topping 100 million streams on a leading streaming service: For the Humans Who Take Long Walks in the Forest, Music for the Free Spirits, Stories, For the Metal People, and Music for the Fellow Witches Out There. Later that year, she began releasing songs from her fourth full-length and had a featured spot on the Sub Urban single "Paramour." Themed around Ancient Greek mythology, the album The Gods We Can Touch arrived on Glassnote and Decca in January 2022. It was produced by the singer and long-time collaborator Magnus Skylstad, who also co-wrote many of the songs.

I just adore her. The first exposure to her I ever had was in March 2020, during lockdown, when I randomly stumbled across that Nidarosdomen concert and legit had my life changed. My mind and soul was _buzzing_ that night....
Over 2 years later, knowing her super well by now, the thing about her that really hits me....is how ridiculously HEALTHY she is, in every sense of that word. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, sensually, socially....she is just the walking talking epitome of what is possible in a human being who is utterly actualized and living their life like it's the most precious thing imaginable.
I think she's also keenly aware of and grateful for how incredibly unique and lucky she is to be the person she is. All of that makes her supremely attractive....again, on multiple levels. Her outer beauty is jaw dropping...and is a reflection of what's inside as well.
Gah.....see, here I go....gushing about her by piling hyperbolic adjectives on top of superlatives.
It's hard not to do that though lol.
In short....she's flat out one of my favorite humans ever.
There's a lot of people I like or admire or respect. But Aurora is one of maybe 3 people(not counting family) who if/when they die....I'll legit have to call in sick to work and spend all day in bed crying. Jesus....that got dark. Ok, enough typing.. :P

You reminded me when i heard she for the first time, in that night…
Same in Nidarosdomen, my soul floated over this world with “Walking In The Air”.
I had the luck to see her one week ago in Mexico City, and was fcking incredible. 🖤

I seriously think that she is the wisest person alive. When there was the election in Brazil, fans commented like "Aurora for president". I replied that the only drawback would be that then she wouldn't have time to make music. Having said that, I also say that in a sense she is the visible and audible tip of an iceberg and that there are, there has to be, hundreds like her. So to anyone reading this, believe in yourself and do what you feel is right and good. Share it if you feel like it, otherwise keep it to yourself (hide the pieces, as in In Bottles).

Tell us honestly, did you need a moment to cry at the end, after being first amazed by the gift she is, and then for the generous burst of love she sent you at the end?! Thank you for interviewing her, I've just heard of her recently and am so glad she and God decided she would incarnate now. If only we all oozed that unconditional love like that. Keep in mind that some of her genius seems to have been born in tragic deaths of loved ones in her young life. Her life testifies to the power of love, she inspires authenticity. Shine on, all of you!

I guess listening to her own songs might be like watching my own art pieces is to me. It doesn't matter no matter how many people assure me they're masterpieces since I'm a perfectionist and I just see everything that should have been made differently and all the things I still need to improve on. This waters down my ability to enjoy my own works. Maybe it's the same for her.

This is an odd creature this. Doesn’t seem all there. Very aloof. But clearly aware of the eyes on her. Also how many times did she say natural whilst being anything but natural.

    • @i_d_i_e_h
      @i_d_i_e_h ปีที่แล้ว +14

She IS odd and weird sometimes. And guess what? That's one of the many reasons why millions of people all over the world LOVE her. Aurora is a free spirit who is unapologetically herself. There are few people like her in this cruel world. She spread nothing but love and acceptance. She unify people. Make people believe they are good enough JUST as they are.
Trust me... life is much better when you see and understand people with kindness, instead of judging them because they don't fit your norm.
      You should try.
