  • This is a Portland and Western lumber train going over Cornelius Pass from Hillsboro to their interchange point they have with themselves. That location is where the Multnomah Channel and Willamette River meets. Film date is 8/2/22.

This video is nothing less than a bucket list dream of mine. Always been fascinated and intrigued by the Cornelius Pass rural right of way. I don't drive so seeing this would be next to impossible anyway.
Thanks so much. You have no idea the help you've been.

You’re very welcome. Thank you for the kind words. Just happened to see it go through Tigard after work and just chased it.

I'm surprised by how this train was assembled... Lumber, then logs. Lumber, then logs. With a tank or two tossed in, just for fun!
A view of this train on another day crossing the Holcomb Creek trestle would be cool as would a view of it entering or leaving the tunnel!
Thanks for chasing this train along it's journey!

I grew up on Jackson Quarry Road, parents still live there, about 2 miles from that crossing. It’s rare to see a train cross there, but I always am hopeful that I’ll get stuck waiting for one. 😂
Thanks for the video tracing many familiar places that I still pass by daily.

this is a very well done video but me personally would rather see the whole train once especially when most of the cars are the same. IMHO the locos are the stars. Keep up the good work

P & W out of Oregon is the last or very few last trains in the native US that runs logs those log cars are from mid 70's so over 50 years old and still in service as of 2024 this one was I believe currently headed to banks where the mill is for those logs.

Does anyone know the history/route that went over US26 parallel to Cornelius Pass Road ? There were some trestle footings there until just a few years ago when they widened CPR. I've often wondered if the MAX blue line was constructed on part of an old P&W route.

I drive the pass everyday, never seen the track used. I keep hoping. Any idea how often and when it's used?

Look very carefully towards the east, just north of the hairpin turn on CPR as you head towards US30. You can see a glimpse of the tracks. And the answer is yes, there is a tunnel, but I'm not sure how long it is. Probably several hundred feet long and probably curved, going under Cornelius Pass Rd near the hairpin turn. The rails are very shiny, so it's probably daily. I live next to Shute Park, and there are probably 8-10 trains per day, all hours, thru Hillsboro. In fact, there's one right now as I'm typing this. If you look carefully on a modern satellite view, you can see roughly where the tunnel is ( 45.60598129233784, -122.8737424105851 and 45.614714807855826, -122.86026785874628 )
