We are so impressed with that fantastic portrait, and beyond proud to see you using our own Blick Studio Markers! It's a great moment for us to see this amazing representational artist flex her figurative and portrait skills using our products! 😍
Loved this tutorial and I have those markers on my wish list now. I have learned so much from you in the watercolor mastery course and from these wonderful videos. Thank you so much for all you have taught me! And I continue to learn from you
I know in one of your interview videos you had mentioned how people like us think you artists are so gifted and are born with it. Well I understand that it takes a lot of hard work too, but Emily you are both! You are a natural born artist and of course you work meticulously on your art to make it look stupendously awesome. I am registered in your Watercolor Mastery courses, and do find it helpful but it is sometimes so intimidating as you can draw soooooo well and the paintings looks spectacular. I have had trouble drawing the initial sketching (I hate tracing!) and by the time I’m done with the painting, it is so off! Ugh! So you are an amazing teacher and indeed I love your courses, just don’t keep up with it as I should and of course that matters too, I guess. But please do keep inspiring and keep those wonderful tutorials coming. We desparados thrive on it!! 😂 thanks for a new kind of medium I can dip my hands into!!😊
If you want to get better at drawing do try doing it upside down like Emily did. I have tried it a couple of times and it is crazy how well the sketches turned out! I can draw fairly well right side up but I’m totally sold on the upside down method!
Hullo Emily, thank you for sharing this wonderful portrait of your husband! I have used alcohol markers for years now and I have never used them for finished pieces unless they are used just for an underpainting or base coat for pencils. I have used them for artwork that will be photographed and permanence is not required. I know others make prints from their marker art. I do like them for discovering shading or for quick color studies. I like how they work so well when setting up for pastels, blocking in the shapes and creating small quick studies so I have an idea going forward so I am not wasting my soft pastels, I have used watercolor the same way, but markers dry so much faster! Thank you.
What a great idea to draw something upside down. I have done that like in a specific area before, but never a whole drawing but you know what I may try that.
Amazing work as always 😊 I’ve been experimenting with markers and like my watercolour, I’m still rather heavy handed 😂 I did read recently that using watercolour paper with markers may dry out your markers quicker because the paper is so absorbent, so draws ink out of the markers much more quickly than using other papers. Perhaps that’s what happened to your copics?
Great video! Love Dick Blick❤. The Betty Edwards book is pack with learning excercises. I've been curious about markers and love mixed media art. Thank you very much for this video.
A mirror also works. The more ways you can use to check, the better. I also sometimes take a photograph. I’m often surprised how different a photo of my art looks from the original!
Wow! They are alcohol markers. I have lots of alcohol markers, which I hardly use. Have been waiting for this. Please add alcohol markers to your Mastery course. I am a member for years. Loving all your tutorials.

This is absolutely gorgeous and I'd love to try this myself.

@@EmilyOlsonArt Oh! By the Emily, i already ordered the 6 grey color marker set from Blick and it was so affordable! Hope i can use it like you do.

Great to watch you work with these markers, especially to see the sketch and marker-ed piece unfold.
Thank you.
My pleasure!
I would love to see more demos or tutorials with watercolor markers. Loved this one! Thank you for showing us how to layer and build up a portrait.
My pleasure!
I'm so fortunate there is a blick store close by to me! they usually even have cheaper prices than some of the large chain art supply stores

Very interesting! I never thought about using them as an underpainting for pastel. Thanks so much for sharing!
Just got some alcohol markers! Anxious to try them out after watching your video. Thanks for the demo!

It’s a game-changer!
Great video Emily! Do you think you can make a video like this bit a colored portrait?
That would be fun!
such a cool video! I had no idea you could make a realistic sketch with markers. It was really fun to watch. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great Video!!! Have you ever tried Lisilinka metallic watercolor paints? They look really beautiful, but I don't know if they are any good.
Not yet! Thanks for the suggestion!

Not sure they’d fit with my watercolor school, but I’ll be happy to make more YT videos with these! :-)
Drawing a subject upside-down was also taught to me in an art class! But I forgot about it 😢
It’s super helpful!
I haven’t used alcohol markers much - I just ordered one of the colored sets of Blick markers- what paper would you recommend to use with these?
Hot pressed watercolor paper or vellum paper will work great!
@@EmilyOlsonArt thank you so much!
Great ideas
More watercolor animals! Especially horses!
It's seems you use watercolor paper?
Yes I do!
