Aquabord recommends that you prewet the entire surface to “prime” the bord - bubbles will rise and be eliminated Might be worth a try on the QOR ground
Like I commented when you were both at the conference, my art favourites colliding ❤. I've had Ali's set since the beginning of the year as I'm one of her dedicated "Aligators". We're a bunch of portrait artists from all over the world, working on Aquaboard and/or Aqua-ground and I've been with Ali for almost four years now. I'm so impressed with your first attempt at watercolour ground. It's very different to working on paper and it certainly has it's challenges BUT overall, I much prefer working this way for portraits. Yes, small brushes are key, as is less water when working on details. You can use more water when you're confident of your painting and then the blooms can be beautifully "placed" to a certain extent. Having said that, I generally don't do "blooms" on my actual portraits, only on backgrounds. Anyhoo, thank you for such a wonderful video on introducing Ali's v special palette. Your portrait was very special and turned out very "glowy" 😊 x
I got my set of her paints and tried them on a portrait closeup and got the same feeling: I miss the permanent rose and also the purple i Getty p. rose and ultramarine finest of schmincke.
Oof, kudos for tackling this! The painting on watercolor ground looks challenging in a technical way. I'm impressed by how you "solved" it with the crosshatching. The set looks great but I never would have imagined these colors as skin tones. I recently bought a bunch of browns/earth tones to use as skin tones. Lovely range of color mixes with this set, though. Well done!
Thank you for doing portraits! I bought this set and really liked it. However Allie only has a couple of videos painting… so it was wonderful to see you use these. All of your work is beautiful, but your portraits are absolutely inspired. I’m taking my set out again tomorrow! Please keep doing these videos, they are priceless.
Wow , what a save, that really turned out beautiful ! I just received this set yesterday, I can appreciate that they put the staining & transparency info on the tubes in this set! Thank you for sharing your mad skills, you’re an incredible water colorist, beautiful portraits ❤
I almost bought this set at Michael’s a few days ago! Will put it on my list for sure now that I seen your video. You done a fantastic job with them! Very encouraging!
Wonderful effects with the QOR CP ground, I'll have to try it, and I'll have to get this new QOR set too (huge fan of QOR paints), LOVE portraits and it would be awesome if you could include more of them in your WC Mastery site for those of us who love portraits!
Hullo Emily, I thought all of the portraits you painted are lovely! I have discovered Liz Chaderton’s recipe for watercolor ground and I have used it on a variety of surfaces (as has she) and it works just wonderfully! I want to offer a small caution, when using a surface other than paper you MUST prepare all sides of it! You don’t need to put ground on everything, but you need to seal the back of your wood panel. Simple gesso can work or use a UV seal spray after you complete your painting and seal the entire project. Please take care on which panels you use for your grounds. I tried an aluminum panel and after only a year my painting pealed off! There were temperature variations where it was hung and the backside sweating caused humidity to form under the ground, yep, it pealed up and this super expensive panel was not so ideal after all! I admire how you stuck to the colors in the palette, I would have just gotten another violet color to make the shirt and my life easier! I have “stuck to” limitations before and it can be fun but if it causes unnecessary complications just stop and change your mind and get the color you need to create a more successful artwork.
I notice that the paints are for all complexions. Perhaps for colors other than faces you could use a purple. Or does she use just 5hose colors for the whole work. Lovely portrait, Emily!
Emily, if you were to hang this in the house, would you apply something to protect it such as the Dorlands wax or Krylon Archival UV varnish spray? Thanks! Lovely piece!!!
Beautiful portrait Emily! I've been dying to get my hands on this set!!! I'm also going to try painting on Claybord like Ali does! I'm trying to experiment with other surfaces than paper!
For this surface, maybe a heat gun would be a good tool to use so as to hinder the pooling/puddling/bubbling? I am so glad you tried this set, I was on the fence to get this set but it’s really glowing. ❤️
lovely painting. but may help to know that Daniel smith wc ground has to cure 24hrs. qor ground may be the same, which may explain why your color sits on top rather than bleeding in (i didn't have this problem with wc ground and I'm thinking that may be why it needs to cure)
I’ve been looking at this set, which with you and your brush made some beautiful paintings. I have to say, I think I preferred the watercolor paper look. But that’s just my opinion. Would you add this to your normal palette or still use the colors for portraits in you palette? Thank you for sharing this demo! Nell
Her work is beautiful but… I still prefer your palette. Hers don’t make beautiful purples like ultramarine blue and permanent rose do. I still use your palette for basically everything

What a beautiful, successful painting. Bravo madame!
The colors are so beautiful, and you are so talented! I love your artwork. ❤

WOW, is this your daughter? She is lovely and I can see the lines of your face in hers. Amazing portraiture. Insporational.
these colours are so beautiful 🥰
Very inspiring ✨
Super! Enjoyed watching the Qor paint review here and another review with a different Qor pallete in a previous video.
I love learning about watercolor round! Thank you!
I just made a video on this too what a coincidence! Lovely video 🤍
Great work! I really enjoyed watching you paint. Beautiful portraits!

Hi Emily, I am trying to become a member and when I clicked on setting up a plan, it would not work. Is there another way of becoming a member?
Hi! So sorry you are having trouble signing up! You can email Kristen at help@watercolormastery.com!
❤❤❤❤
Her work is beautiful but… I still prefer your palette. Hers don’t make beautiful purples like ultramarine blue and permanent rose do. I still use your palette for basically everything
That’s kind of you to say! I think Ali’s palette is perfect WITH the addition of Ultramarine and Perm Rose.
I’m not sure about the skin. I don’t think I like it. You saved your picture
