I can still hear my art professor saying, "Draw what you see, not what you know." Don't assume you know all the shapes. Spend way more time looking at the subject than looking at your drawing, and like you said, making constant comparisons. Great video!! Thank you!
I too believe that anybody can learn to draw. I worked off of a book called drawing from the right side of the brain. If you follow those exercises and see the negative space the positive space you can draw anything. I’m still learning, but I think that was very beneficial for me. Thank you for the good video tips.
This video and info is so helpful. I am a watercolor plein air painter who is not so great at the drawing that needs to be accurate before the painting can begin. Drawing is so stressful to me. I have begun trying to draw in a sketchbook as often as I can. Thank you so much for sharing these drawing tips.😊
So helpful. Thanks so much. Wondering if you could give a detailed description of the composition finder that you made. Is the outside dimension 4x5 or the inner dimension 4x5 (in which case what’s the outside dimension. Looks so easy to make one. Thanks in advance !
The inner dimension should be scaled to match your surface size - the outer dimension is largely irrelevant but an inch or two to make it stable and easy to hold.
Drawing your own hand really is a good and fun exercise which I don’t do enough. Anyhow, tomorrow it will be fruit (and fruit salad after the drawing exercise 😂).
Great video as always. I can’t wait to learn more about painting from life or plein air painting tips. Thank you Emily!
As someone with very little natural talent for drawing, I can attest to the fact that you do get better with practice.
Absolutely!

My first art teacher told me that 90% of drawing well is learning to see. I've never forgotten!

A sketchbook will help a ton! Have fun!
