    Great channel! Your orchids are to die for... You can also use burlap as a lining, and by the time it breaks down the bottom should be well established and covered in roots. Works like a charm! Thank you for all the wonderful content! 😍

      The Orchid Room this is the issue with them- not a huge selection sadly. I just bought a gilded tower mystic maze and young psychopsis that were both in awesome shape, packed very well and the shipping was fast to Sweden as well so I’m anxiously awaiting the next time they have something I’m after. That was the first plant order (previously I only got supplies) and the gilded tower is struggling to adapt a little but the psychopsis took right off for me. I just placed a big lucke Orchideen order for summer blooming and novelty phals so it will be some time before I order anything else... probably lol. But that’s the experience I’ve had so far anyway.

      Laura Bertucci thank you for your reply I put two of my Vandas back in bark they were already in wooden baskets. I wouldn’t mind not watering every day if I can. I got one vanda in a plastic octagon basket that they rapped the roots in a circle then use Oregon green moss and charcoal in the small square basket it came in. It worked ok until I noticed the roots were staying to wet and rotting so I removed it all back to bare root. I live in a area were summer gets to 110 day and 85 at night.i like you videos the first one I saw was you receiving a package of new plants. I know I said 10 minutes is enough watering but I have a separate bucket of filter water for each plant and I guess I let them soak for a half hour. I emailed the place you buy from but they don’t usually send to US but said they might do a package for here. Anyway great videos and I will watching the ones you suggested. Thank you Patrick

      @@patrickmcconnell2410 Vandas do like alot of air around the roots so potting may not work for everyone, it depends on so much, including your climate, media, pots and watering routine, so it's good that you noticed the rot and acted quickly! 😀 The baskets are a bit more airy and dry faster compared to pots so Ive not had any issues with those. I would recommend trying to find a US vendor for orchids If you can, import and export of orchids across regions can be problematic especially with customs regulations. You may need to apply for an import permit beforehand in addition to CITES and phyto certificates. It can be very costly and if the orchids get seized by customs due to paperwork errors you may not ever get them... (I had this experience personally with orchids from Thailand despite having correct paperwork, their was an error with timing of the import permit application, the Vandas got destroyed). There are lots of good US vendors I believe, if you're not sure of which one to try there's a Facebook page called orchaholics anonymous, I believe many members there are from the US, it may be worth putting a post on there asking for recommendations 😄

      Luckily I've got enough coco fibre to last me a long time as I bought it on a 10 x 6 ft roll...That's a good idea though, I was just thinking out loud that there were probably non organic alternatives 😀 you can get metal mesh that's coated in plastic so maybe that would work also 😄

      Now I’m experimenting -lining my baskets with bird netting. While the gutter guard works well for the bottom I still lost LECA or bark from the sides.
      So far the bird netting works really well. You can cut it to size & it’s relatively inexpensive. $6 for a 2.5m x2.5m roll.

I may have to try experimenting with diff inorganic materials...

    I saw when you received your plants. I’m trying to get them to sell me a V. courluea Alb but they hardly ever ship to us. I have 15 Vandas all bear root. Some came in pots and I tried the set up your doing but like someone else said the bark floats up every time I soaked them in there wooden baskets. So now they are all back to bare root baskets. I wake up at 5am every morning and soak my Vandas for 10 minutes. As far as I know vanda roots will soak up all the water they can in 10 minutes. Someone made a great suggestion if you soak your Vandas to put Somme kind of screen over the top. I look forward to seeing how your Vandas grow in your basket set up in 6 months. Thank you for taking the time to share with the rest of us. Patrick

      Hi, thanks for the comment! some of the vandas I already had have been in this basket system for nearly a year now 😄 I've updated on these guys recently in my vanda summer update, lots of amazing root growth, let's hope it continues! I also showed how I soak these to avoid bark floating out in my recent watering routine 😀 While vanda roots may absorb a good amount of water in 10 minutes I prefer to do half an hour once a week as they will absorb water as long as they are in contact with water. Then quick spray downs every day in summer due to the heat. One idea I had was trying lava rock as an inorganic alternative to bark as I know some people do.... going to be doing some tests to see if it holds enough water first though! Great to hear your current method😀

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How are you keeping it? If bare root, water when the roots are dry. Probably once to twice a day in summer, less in winter. Whenever the roots go back from green to silver, water it again. That advice applies to all potting methods, but frequency will vary depending on the type of media. Vandas are generally hot growers and don't take any form of break so should be watered evenly year round but more frequent watering and fertilizing when actively growing, which is usually at the peak in summer. Hope that helps.

    Those Vandas look much more pretty now :) I have thought of doing it but being Vandas they will eventually grow their roots outside the basket.You must have seen Vandas that have 4 feet long roots hanging down the bottom. What do you do then?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, thanks! 😀 My vandas that have been in the set up for over 6 months are actually growing their roots out of the basket and then the roots are looping back into the basket (I think in search of the moisture from the media). When I have lots of roots outside the baskets I can just place the smaller baskets into bigger baskets and fill around with media 😀. Vandas grow very long root systems to attach to trees and search for water so they may not grow quite so long if they have media to find the moisture in? The Vandas I have seen with such long root systems have been bare root....We will see 😀 My new Aerides had 5 foot long roots but it went into a pot still as Aerides do much better with a bit more moisture in my environment 😄 If they want to grow their roots out in the end that's just fine, the moisture from the media in the baskets should be in contact with enough roots to keep them happy, and at the moment I'm having to do a couple of extra waterings a week (just spraying the media with my pump sprayer on top of their weekly soak) with the heat wave we are having so spritzing the roots down isn't an issue, the bark in the basket makes it much easier to water. I'd be really struggling with them right now if they weren't basketed! 😅

      @@TheOrchidRoom I am struggling too, even with spraying twice a day. I followed Mr. Motes's recommendations on spraying couple of minures apart but the roots never turn dark green. Some of the root tips on my pachara delight are drying up. So I am in serious consideration of putting them in some media. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I think I have to try and see for myself as in my environment (35°C & avg 60%) rotting is pretty common.

      Sorry to hear yours are super thirsty at the moment too 🙁 Yeah I bought some new orchids and vandas on Thursday and didn't want to pot them straight away, they were bare root. But I got home from work the next day after unboxing them and they were so limp and sorry looking even though I'd soaked them for a couple of hours the day before! So had to do some emergency potting as they can't go that limp while I'm not there to check them and it be ok... I think at the moment because I've got lots of fans going to try and cool the room (I say cool but it's still around 30C atm so not quite as hot as yours!) it's dropping the humidity down to 50% sometimes when I'm not there. It's so difficult to generalise for different environments like you say! What works for me could be a total disaster in a different environment. Good luck with yours 😀 I'm sure you'll find a creative way of getting them through the hot weather!

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not in my experience- it depends on your climate. What they need is a large oxygen ratio. In nature they are often constantly wet for days in the rainy seasons, but they have lots of airation for gas exchange. You may want to check out some more recent vanda updates if you're interested in learning more 😊 I'm growing many successfully in variations of semi hydroponic setups now. They did excellently in baskets with bark and moss, but I struggled carrying the baskets to and from the bathroom to soak without bashing roots. It also greatly deoends on the 'vanda'- many of mine are aerides or rhynchostylis hybrids, which love as much water as they can get and don't need so much of an oxygen ratio. They can be constantly moist- *as long as they have loads of room for gas exchange*

      Hi there! I would recommend potting, you'll struggle with any seedling bare root. Depends on environment and the seedling in question, different vandas like different amounts of moisture, my mimi palmer seedling is in pure synthic. You could use medium grade bark or a bark-moss mix fairly safely, depending on the seedling and the environment.
