Magnum are a gem of a band, Tony Clarkin is one of the most gifted of craftsmen and Bob Catley's voice soars on the wings of heaven. Astonishing consistent band.
Never heard of Magnum before coming to the SoT TH-cam channel two years ago. in the meantime, have bought several of their albums and enjoyed them all. So, despite the CD budget for January already way over the top, ordered this today and looking forward to its arrival. Thanks once again, Pete, for this weekly review shows of new music and product. They are great information though often damaging to my wallet.
Quite true Pete. You've nailed it. You can always rely on Magnum. Excellent music as usual. My favourite from 2002 onwards is still Escape from the shadow garden but this one is really excellent too. Bob Catley still sings excellent ( he's definitely one of those singers who takes cares of his singing) but never forget Tony Clarkin, he always states that the most important is the song, the music. That's one of the reasons this band is still top after fifty years
I really like it. It reminds me a lot of the earlier stuff like Kingdom of Madness and Eleventh Hour with complex arrangements and tasty guitar and keyboard parts. Great vocals from Bob, too.
Great show Pete. Been a fan of Magnum since the early 80s. The Monster Roars is a great album, although I don't think it's quite as good as their previous two releases. Favourite songs are definitely 'remember' & 'that freedom word' 👍
Hi Pete I just received my order of this album .I have be a fan of Magnum since the first album that I got was Kingdom of madness !So it was great to hear what you think about this new album 😊
I would urge those who are looking for an entry point into one Britain's finest hard rock bands, to check out the SoT Magnum ranking show with Pete and Steven Reid. Enjoy.
I saw them years back in the middle of one those big festivals in England. I think it was one of those big Prog festivals with ELP, Asia, Transatlantic etc. I was very impressed
Just got this yesterday and I'm really enjoying it! I don't always agree with your opinions, Pete, but I can't deny that you've turned me on to a lot of great bands I had never heard of since I've been watching this channel. So thanks.
I've had this on repeat some times since it came out. It is actually the first Magnum album I've heard from front to back. I only knew some of the "hits". And it's a pleasant to the ears, with some nice sounds. I like it, but it doesn't completely stick with me. A 6/10 for me. Some highlights for me are: I Won't Let You Down, That Freedom Word and Walk the Silent Hours. I already have a ticket to see them live in May, though, and I'm looking forward to that!
Tony Clarkin is one of Englands greatest ever song writers, he's up there with Ray Davies, Jeff Lynne, Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, David Bowie and Pete Townshend.
Just finished listening to this for the first time. Another great later Magnum album they haven’t dipped for many years now. Not sure the cover conveys the music inside, I was almost expecting a full on metal album,, possibly lyrically it fits I’d have to listen again. Is there anything not expected, form a Magnum album, horns apart, probably not. Do they let down any expectation ,no they don’t. If you don’t know what to expect from Magnum what the hell have you been doing for the last 50 years. Listen to this and find out.
The last few albums from the band have been almost up with their best work (On A Storyteller's Night, Chase The Dragon etc). A vintage band still producing entertaining and vital sounding music.
Personally, while certainly not a bad album, it certainly isn't one of their best in my opinion. I've found that for me a lot of their more recent releases have been quite consistent in quality. However, for me this is the weakest of any of their recent albums. On this album there are a couple of songs that I do like (That Freedom Word being my favourite) however there is a lot AI think is quite average and one or two tracks I dislike. No Stepping Stones being my least favourite. So overall for me, it's an ok album that isn't quite as good as some of their other recent releases but still definitely worth purchasing if you are a Magnum fan.
Pete, how do you find time to listen music. I’m having a hard time carving out enough time to listen to record in it’s entirety. I’ll have to check out this new release. Thanks
Have to agree. I think Catley can still put the songs across, unlike a lot of other singers his age who are totally shot, but he certainly doesn't sound like he did just 10 years ago.
@@jonnycarr1000 No one is arguing his determination and I'm glad he's still at it, but to just ignore the strong change in his voice over the past ten years is lying.
@@dw.dunphy Yeh agreed, he does take a bit of time to warm the vocals up when signing live. Glad he is still putting the albums out at 74. Looking forward to seeing them at the end of the month.
@@dw.dunphy For me, The 2016 tour was when I first noticed that his voice wasn't quite as strong as it used to be, but we need to remember he's not a young man by any means and to still be doing it at his age is incredible!
Magnum's a pretty good rock band. I have several of their prior releases (Evolution, Madness, Kingdom Of Madness, Marauder, On The 13th Day) but not this one, but I've heard it. 12 tracks total, I like "Remember", "No Steppin' Stones", "Your Blood Is Violence", "Can't Buy Yourself A Heaven", "The Day After The Night Before". Honestly some of the other tracks are pretty good too but not quite interesting enough to me to download them. Overall I'd give this one a 3.3 out of 5, not a bad album at all. Not as good as Kingdom Of Madness but good. Also a good day in that I've got 5 new songs to listen to! FYI since we're talking about new releases, this one's an archival album but check out Robben Ford & The Blue Line Live at Yoshi's '96, especially if you like good/jazzy blues rock. Just saw it hit one of my music download sites, looks like it just got released...I pulled down the following 7 tracks: "Put It Where You Want It", "Prison Of Love", "Wes", "Another Corner", "Philly Blues", "Moth To A Flame", "Bounce That"
Have you listened to Storytellers? Very different from the rest of their stuff, and an absolutely essential listen. If How Far Jerusalem doesn't hook you immediately when the chorus kicks in I will eat my hat
I'm sure the album's music will be suitably reliable...but that cover art. Good grief. It's a thoroughly unappealing image (even though that's partially by design), off the shelf fonts for the text that give the packaging a cheap, poorly thought-out vibe...very perplexing.
Makes me sad that Magnum turned into a band whose new releases don't get me excited at all anymore. Boring and redundant. Their last albums all sound "rock operetta'ish" as if they had hung around too much with guys like Tobias Sammet. Their new(er) releases don't come even close to their earlier works.

A fantastic album from a criminally underrated band.

Chase the Dragon is a masterpiece. Magnum is always consistent in releasing quality music.
Really appreciate the good review for this gem of a band. Seen them so many times.

My copy on vinyl arrived today - been really looking forward to this.
As always Magnum deliver, Just a brilliant band!

YEAH, still going strong! best rock band ever IMHO 🍺🤘
Superb album Pete listening to it now Paul from england 🇬🇧🤟
great album as always
this may just be one of the best magnum albums in the last 20 years

Great review! I’ve got the same feelings about this album. Remember and That Freedom Word is my favourites too!
Magnum are the consistently great UK rock band ,the trip tych of on a storytellers night , vigilante and wings of heaven are outstanding. Great band 💕
Like this album
You mean, The Monster, not the Beast, right? Haha. The Grace and Fire album by ELYSIUM bandcamp is on the description also.
Wow, thanks for catching all that...it was early, and I GOT THE OLDS!
If you play it backwards, you’ll get the best Mungam album we’ve had in years.
In all seriousness, I can’t take all the awesome content on SoT!!! 😎
The last few albums from the band have been almost up with their best work (On A Storyteller's Night, Chase The Dragon etc). A vintage band still producing entertaining and vital sounding music.
16th September 2022 at the beautiful Holmfirth Picturedrome
Great place to see a gig, The Nook not too far away and Magic Rock, just around the corner, though the bar in The Picturedrome is good.
...Cool Cool 😎 ! Thanx as always Pete I'm catching up on reviews ....Killer , All the Damn Time !

Didn't know they had a new one - will check it out. It seemed to me like Catley's voice is finally starting to go, on the last few.
Have to agree. I think Catley can still put the songs across, unlike a lot of other singers his age who are totally shot, but he certainly doesn't sound like he did just 10 years ago.
Guys - He is 74! How many singers are still producing this at 74, with 22 studio albums under their belt.

Pete, any chance of Bob Catley coming on for an interview? Unless he’s been on already and I just missed it.
Good episode. Lots of great reviews in the comments.
The Serpent Rings is better. Really enjoyed that one.
Great band. Constandly good albums, this is good 7/10, but not great.
I pretty much agree...
I think it's their best since wings of heaven (which needs a remaster, somebody please).
That accolade would go to The Visitation, Into The Valley Of The Moonking and Escape From The Shadow Garden IMO.
Does the singer still end every line with "oooh" 😜😜

I have tried so hard because you love em but I just can't The prog stuff just doesn't get through to me
Prog, mate? I wouldn't consider Magnum as as prog band, even there are some elements too. Anyway I love prog music too😅
Have you listened to Storytellers? Very different from the rest of their stuff, and an absolutely essential listen. If How Far Jerusalem doesn't hook you immediately when the chorus kicks in I will eat my hat
Is it me, or are the vocals low in the mix??
Probably on Spotify and streaming. Sounds great on CD
@@carlarmou7293 Also sounds OK to me after streaming from my music download service...
Sounds perfect to me. Too many albums have it too high imo (especially if it it's a singer's album).
