Never comment, but as an aspiring photographer n hearing you talk about ur emotions of depression n loneliness during the pandemic is really inspirational. Keep taking amazing photos because it really does make a difference
Definitely strangers. Those yearly family albums are so nice. The kids will be really thankful for them when they grow up. Those Lomo 100 on 120 always impresses me. Looking forward to the Southend Project as well.
Regarding model vs strangers... The session with Anabelle was great. However, strangers may fit better environmental portraits. So, both alternatives have a place. The thing with the Annabelle photographs was the overall quality (film/developer choice, etc.).
I thoroughly enjoyed your Video. We, too, were confined to our residence here in Texas (USA) for that same time period and if it wasn't for TH-cam and videos like yours, I don't know what I would have done. Thanks again!
Grand ! Glad to know everything’s coming together . The inimitable Mrs. Humble keeping home and hearth together as usual. Thanks for the video. Spontaneous images of the family treasures. Grateful for your medium format videos. I finally plucked up the courage and purchased a Hasselblad.
Strangers. For me they add another level of interest that a model cannot provide. With each stranger, there is a story behind the image, who is the person, why are they there, etc. Although we do not get to know them, it still adds something.
Thanks, I agree. To longer I've been doing photography for the more I've become more inserted in taking portraits of 'real' people. Not that models aren't real people but people who aren't used to posing for a camera.
Congrats on publishing your book and I love the subject matter! Also glad that you're still getting out and shooting. I love the idea of those yearly photo albums and certain plan on using that idea for my own family!
Good to see another video Tom. In regards to the models or strangers question, I’d recommend strangers. I’ve been shooting 4x5 portraits of strangers over the past couple of months and have absolutely enjoyed it. On more than one occasion, a 5 minute photo has turned into an hour long conversation with someone I would never have otherwise met. That being said, our 107 day lockdown ended this week and I’m looking forward to shooting portraits of friends, family and models that have been off limits for a few months.
Thanks Matt, I’ve been following along with your recent stranger portraits on insta and I enjoy seeing them! When I was shooting for the southend project I had many similar experiences where a 5 min meeting turned into an hour long conversation. It’s why I think my film photography is going more towards long term project work where I get the chance to tell others stories. I find it much more interesting and rewarding.
Hi, I feel strangers might give better results for the challenges it provide for both you and the subjects. Good luck on it, I believe you can face it with great enthusiasm based on what you just showed here. Best regards!
Great show , waiting for my beast of a mamiya c330 medium format camera to arrive, can’t wait to use it. Tom you in essex ? I’m Wickford , do you ever do meet ups etc ?
Strangers. But I definitely have the same thoughts when it comes to 35mm, film and large format. If I’m wanting something quick and small, I’m just going to go digital and forego all the costs, time, etc that comes with film, specifically 35mm. Enjoyed this talk though and the 4x5 wedding shots were great. Had the same idea about a project at weddings and I was going to call it “An American Wedding.” Maybe we can do both and compare USA against UK weddings 💒
Thanks Bryan. Would love to see that from you too! Be interesting to compare. Were you focusing more on the couples or the guests? Or just a mix of everything?
@@Tom-Humble I was going to do everything. Guests, couples, decorations, everything to do with weddings in general. Because, you know as well, you come across a lot of interesting things as well as characters during weddings.
Nice images… I’ve been there… but I changed my mind again on 35mm. Print size I think has a great influence of how much you like it as well as how you shoot. There are many classic photos shot on 35mm so size is a Personal choice. But I’ve started it again with an old p&s. I sold all my MF and LF gear. I don’t shoot b&w , colour is stupid money now. I have a ar73 now which I use voitlander lenses on and the results are crazy good. I hardly use it but that’s down to time not the camera. I’m in a long project on Southend myself but not shot anything now since last year.
HI Tom we're still in that lockdown down here in Melbourne Australia. We have the privilege of being the longest locked down city in the world over the last 2 years! Yay! Great video. Just found you.
Loving the lockdown project. Definitely buying one when released! Also my birthday is on the 27th of November but i am turning 34 🙂🙂 I vote for “Strangers” definitely & Good luck with publishing your book 🙏🏼
For quite a few of them I took their details to send them the photos and contacted them at a later date with a release. Some of them I don’t have one though.
I’ve used the Mamiya 7 quite a few times and love the portability of it but personally find the lenses a bit too sharp for my taste. The scans look almost digital to my eye. I almost bought the Fuji GW690 before getting my RB67 but I settled for that. I may invest in one some day though as I love the 6x9 look.

@@Tom-Humble It will be great to see where it takes you. I intend to keep it up as well. I’m not sure where it will take me but I’m enjoying the ride.
Strangers for me. Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed it.

I think model shoot would be nice!!

Oh no way nice. Let me know when you do share some images. I’d love to see them.
Strangers. That slight uncomfortableness as they have to hold a pose, I think, makes for some great portraits. You get a real connection.
Agreed!

I have a few friends in Aus who have had a baby and still haven’t been able to leave to see family. Hopefully you’ll be out of lockdown soon!

We’d get on for sure.
Models Tom!
When you photograph these strangers, do you also get a release? It's something on my mind with long term projects.
For quite a few of them I took their details to send them the photos and contacted them at a later date with a release. Some of them I don’t have one though.
@@Tom-Humble Makes sense! I'll try to go the contact info route. If I manage to organize my negatives and notes well, it won't be an issue haha.
Have you considered a Mamiya 6 / Mamiya 7 or a Fuji GW690?

Great video, so many updates lol. Does your model Sophie that you shot with the Lomography film, does she have an Instagram page Tom? #Londonlovesyou
Thanks man. Yes if you just search Sophie Daly on Instagram she’ll be the first one to come up.
gotta be strangers !
Seems to be unanimous!
