- I love to experiment with different ways to take analog photographs. With this video, I skip the film part and go directly on a photo paper. And I like the results!

Diluting the paper developer can also reduce the contrast. The direct positive papers give even more contrast. Nice video by the way :)

Wonderful pictures and another great video! I especially like the 1st shot showing the mug and the last one with the front part of your boat.
Your video gives me a lot of ideas about how to integrate this technique into my photography. For some weeks I have been experimenting with overexposure solarization and use the ORWO LF10 for it which has ISO6. But this film comes only in 35mm. With photographic paper I could LF for my solarization experiments. We have a 4x5 wooden film camera from my great-grandfather from around 1910 and a 13x18 Mentor which I could use for this technique. Will try that for sure. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

I love making paper negatives and then contact printing - it is a unique look and feel as you described. I have to admit I had my doubts when I saw you making pinhole negatives on paper on a rocky boat...! But I should never have doubted you; they are wonderful! You have a beautiful boat and the compositions are so interesting (even harder to achieve with pinhole sometimes). As always, thank you Ari :)
PS - interesting idea with the black plastic underneath the negative when contact printing. I hadn't considered reflections before.... hmmmmm....

let the paper warp in the back of the camera. i made a camera out of a poloroid body and at first i would load the sheets into the poloroid holder but eventually just set a curved sheet in the back gives a wider fov and some really nice results

I know its an old video but what a wonderful one. Straight to the point and fun. I use this method recently with caffenol P and it helps a lot with taming the contrast.

A creative mind is a joy for ever.., well done! I did the same experience with my 5x7 field camera and scanning the paper negative. Developing the paper in a film developer giving much less harsh results!

Cool. What is the ISO / ASA value for the Ilford paper?
@@ShootOnFilm - The box has no speed rating. According to Joe Van Cleave’s video, he recommends you empirically test it depending on the season and location. The paper’’s spectral response is in the blue/UV range so it will depend on the amount of UV light being reflected. He found the range would very dramatically between ISO 1.6 and ISO 8. Excellent results - I love the look of them. I've cut 00 Ilord enlarger filter paper as a filter for my 4x5 pinhole camera to cut contrast but have had mixed results. Best wishes -
I believe it would be best to get single contrast / low contrast paper then?

Turning a negative print into a positive is such a strange experience, very interesting to do though

Nice method -- never tried it before, might do. The "Afghan camera" method is to re-photograph your photo paper photograph again on to photo paper, giving you a positive, not mirrored image. They seem to have done this till a few years ago (or might still do it) to take passport pictures of people as a street business. Never tried this before, but sounds interesting. (They also seem to have coloured the pictures in, with interesting results.)

Well done, thanks for more ideas. I use the Speed Graphic also. I'd like to get ahold of some other lenses. My camera has the Graflex 135mm f4.7 any recommendations on a longer focal length.
On another note nice photos and real cool boat.
Speed Graphics are great because you don't need a shutter with the lens. I use all kinds of lenses. So what's next depends on what you want. The one I used on the video was about 220mm. Nice for portraits like this: instagram.com/p/CDNsJoKHdxr/? But, I have chosen not to start to adjust the range finder. So I use the range finder only with the original lens and the ground glass with everything else.

The pictures in the boat remind me of "the nexus" from the Star trek somehow. The direct positive paper is easier to process, but costlier of course.

I was trying to make chemicals to get black and white slides from scratch but failed terribly, the emulsion peeled off the plastic base, hopefully next time it will work.
I will try with photo paper since it's cheaper than film to experiment with until I get it all sorted out. Thanks for the video and the idea! ; )

Great video! I like those contrasty pictures very much, but lets see if those filters are working as you like. I hope you will do a follow up.
Just one short question: how long were the exposure times on the boat with the pinhole camera?
Exposure times were hard to estimate. Pinhole, photopaper and on top of that fast clouds that covered the sun every now and then. So when direct sunlight -- a minute -- under clouds two minutes. In a few pictures that changed in the middle of the exposure so I kinda did in between :-)

Ari, What is the ilford photo paper that is a negative as well as a positive?
You probably already know this but pre-flashing the “taking” paper will lower its contrast a bit.

Interesting how the boat is sharp as the camera slowly moving on waves synchronized with the movement of the boat. You body is the other story though...

yes. "Experiment, experiment, experiment!" said Alexander Rodtschenko. Although I do think it is important to emphasize sticking with a film and a lens, a format, a focal length. and changing a variable at a time (you seem to be doing very well in this regard but I just worry that the film photography enthusiasts are too easily lured by 'this or that film' and 'this or that lens' (ps. your video about film is great in that respect too) - I have to say that I have been able to stick with a film for a while now and had I used it for a short experiment I would have thrown it right out the window, after meticulous research I am able to achieve some warm soft 50s looking street portaits as well as some engraving-like contrasty landscapes all on one film just by chaning the choice of lens and developer, and printing methods. anyway, not a point of dicussion but just somethign to add, thank you Ari, great to have you as an inspiration!

Oh, that's tough. depends on your film. 0.3 sec - 2 sec ballpark
You might want to investigate pre flashing the paper used for the negatives. This will reduce the contrast and slightly increase the effective speed of the paper.
That’s a good idea. I’ve done the same for color positives to increase latitude. Excellent idea. I will try it!

Unfortunately, you need light-sensitive paper for this.
