I had never heard of, or seen foot wraps until I saw them here, I wish I had known about them when I was in the army.
95% of our big exercises were late autumn or winter and my unitusually got the coldest wettest parts of Europe, mostly we would be in the field for a week at a time and drying socks is never fast or easy in the field. Foot wraps would have saved me a lot of discomfort and spare wraps are easier to pack and easier to make up from spare material.
One of the most useful survival things I have seen. The old saying 'An army marches on its stomach may be true but food or not, no feet no soldiers.
I bet wraps over socks would be good for winter biking too, something I may be doing a bit of when I get over to the mainland.
Haha, in the Finnish army we had these wraps for decades. They changed to socks in the 90's. I preferred the the socks to be honest :-)

Ich verwende die NVA Fußlappen in Stiefeln, und wenn sauber gewickelt sind sie tadellos. Beim marschieren besser als Socken, die runter rutschen können (bei Stiefel). War früher auch in Österreich gebräuchlich, nicht nur in der Armee, sondern auch in der Arbeit. Interessantes altes Wissen, daß auch heute noch seine Berechtigung hat, vorallem in Ausnahmesituationen.Fußlappen sind leicht selbst herzustellen oder zu trocknen wenns sein muß.

Looks very simple but yet potentially very useful.
Your videos are delightful. Reminds me of my youth and being in the forest with my dad. I live in the city and miss country life and outdoors. I like your videos on footwraps. I like this better than socks. I want to make leather shoes myself and thinking about the best layers or inserts so I can clean and dry them easily. I love winter and snow and outdoors in autumn and winter but I have circulation problems. Wraps for ankles and even my knees helps my feet stay warm and good circulation too..
Hi survival russia, growing up my grandfather always wore footwraps made of newspaper, he swore by them. He always wore the wraps in ashley gumboots (a type of lace up gumboot)

I used to use foot wraps a lot when I was a kid. It took me a long time to get used to socks after them. I think I’m going to try using them again for winter hunting this year. Thanks for all the great vids Lars!

Good on you Lars. A survival sock! I know a lot of people give you flak for not posting enough content on survival stuff. This should keep them of your back for a week. Me? Personally I would watch you filming yourself pickling cucumbers and canning potatoes. Keep up the good work!
Wool baize (that usually green or red fabric they cover pool tables and the like with) is really nice for this. Very hard wearing; nice and warm. Just be sure you shrink it in the wash (don't need soap; just warm water) before you cut them to size so they don't shrink later.

Lars, I guarantee you that if you had some "Darn Tough" wool socks from Vermont, you will not have to worry about the sock moving on you. They have an unconditional lifetime warranty if they ever wear out or get a hole in them, your fault, their fault, or nobody's fault, they replace them for a free pair. The foot wrap is great knowledge to have. There are so many places where it is used, it must work well. Thanks for sharing.
I have never considered wearing the foot wraps, but I too have a liking for camo clothing and recently bought a shirt from a local shop...genuine ex-army wear. I also cannot get enough of it. Take care...

I'm using the Russian method this winter using strips from an old woolen army blanket inside my canvas mukluks. So far sitting in my blind and waiting for my big buck to wander by my feet have been toasty warm and comfortable. The wool also keeps insulating even when damp so no chills when 'still hunting' (stalking) and exerting myself in the snow.
One way of wearing rubber boots with socks and have no problem at all is wearing thin ankle socks and thick wool socks above. The ankle sock prevents the wool sock to move. Anyway, I always enjoy Survival Russia and Lars

Hello again Lars. I find that the square foot wraps fit my EEE wide feet more comfortably by removing the stiching that is left on 3 sides. When all three sides are without the seems, they are far more comfortable for me. Over time the other 3 sides become like the one side that doesn't have stitches. Your technique making the final fold is very good. Some on youtube follow the exact same procedure as you, but do not make the final fold in the smooth efficient way. Some simply say to pull up the back and put the boots on. Not near as good. I also like the Russian Flannel winter foot wraps the best, even in Summer with pull-on boots. Great video as always Lars.
I just refresh my memory and I tried them out with thin socks you can roll down the socks on top of the wraps so it helps hold it up so it would be good in winter time make your feet nice and toasty with the wool.Hey Lars you’ve aged a little bit since this video ha ha
I use woolen footwraps on reenacment events and they are much better than socks.On long distance trips in armor they win with socks because they don;t move and don't scratch and hurt feet. :)

Instead of bringing with you extra socks in your backpack, which will take up space that you might need for other clothes or gear on the hike, you can wrap some of the things your are bringing in footwraps, and thereby the footwraps will virtually need no space at all in a backpack.
Alpineflage looks great I like it but its getting expensive here in the US ! I'm going to cut some wool and try then wraps my grand dad used them learned from his dad and down the line take care brother
Hey Lars. Als Ich noch bei Bayer in der Farbstoffproduktion gearbeitet habe, hatte wir auch immer Fusslappen ( Footwraps) . Ich habe sie mit der gleichen Technik gewickelt wie du. Sie sind wirklich sehr bequem. allerdings kamen sie danach immer in den Müll. Sie wurden dann gewaschen und die Schlosser haben sie als Putzlappen bekommen.

I have the old Huskyvarna 50, it's such a powerful little saw and it's never failed! Husky files are very very good also but you probably already know that.
They look comfortable. I imagine they would work well in avoiding fungal infection. They could be easily boiled and dried to prevent microbial growth.
Master Tracker - I'll say this, If anyone had a chance of taking one of the those ugly buggers out with a sling shot it would be you. As for myself, I would end up a splotch of Dino-doo on its nest. You have a good sense of humor and are a good sport. Cheers and ATB 👍✌

Wish I knew about these when I was working on the roads during the winter a few years back. I had thermal socks and they kept my feet warm for the first few hours then they got cold. Definitely will have to find and try these thanks for sharing
Nice Alpenflage coat Lars. They're going for really cheap right now. I think I'll get one for myself. Maybe you can do a video on yours showing the pockets in the back and stuff.

I have used the German type also, with lace boots, and also with jack boots over socks. However the German type do work better with lace boots, when worn alone, and with socks also of course. I like to show people how both work. I like the Russian winter foot wraps the best and also the jack boots.

Wie immer sehr interessantes Video. Fußlappen, sicher auch heute noch ein wichtiger Problemlöser in Notfällen (ein paar Tage unterwegs, Socken naß oder kaputt, Lappen brauchen nicht viel Platz). I just rembered I have an Alpenflage tunic, with the backpack that clips to the back !
We have a kind of 'shop towel' made out of microfibers that is very light and dries almost instantly that I will try to use as a foot wrap. These towels are used by hikers and troopers in the field because they are very soft, light and dry so quickly. They are cheap, too!
I feel like those micro fiber cloths would have put breathability... Did you try it? How did it work?
We had those black socks in the army. I was a poor young teen so I took a bunch of those home when my service ended, haha.

The East- German Army (NVA) had socks and footwraps. I was told the socks were more popular but the guys with the footwraps had definitely better feet after a long march. Btw: The NVA had a lot of the old prussian traditions while the Bundeswehr was just a US GI- Clone, they were the (communist) Wehrmacht with AK´s. How crazy this world can be sometimes.

I think if i WAS to use a foot wrap. I would prefer the Russian style. They seem to fit a little better. The ability to wrap around more. Able to secure better it seems. I would have to actually try to know for sure. Thank u for sharing.

Very cool concept, I can't believe I've never heard of this. Could be extremely applicable for long distance hiking, where a dry sock is worth more than gold. I love your reference to the towel machines lol. I've never seen one in the US but certainly remember them from Europe... In the US its paper towels or hot air blowers.

Hello Lars. I have both the Russian and German foot wraps. I prefer the Russian ones, especially in that I like the pull on jack type boots the best. I agree with you in that I don't know why Armies in Europe have mostly gone to the lace inch lace boots. I think the leather jack boots are great for 3 seasons and a pull on jack boot with felt liners are best for winters in Europe. Of course mountian troops need a different boot. However I prefer the 6 inch ankle boots with puttees or gaiters over the 9 inch boots. I have used the German type that you are showing with pull on boots also, but I prefer the Russian type foot wraps better. Also your video above on the corret way to put on the square German foot wraps carries a couple of really fine points not covered in other videos or instructions. I just tried your way and it's the best. Also I think that for sure German troops in WW-2 often used the Russian foot wraps or foot wraps cut to the Russian standards. You and I seem to like a lot of the same things. I like different camouflage and back packs. Finally I did love the Vietnam Jungle boots that were 9 inches tall, but I never liked the Army leather 9 inchs leather boots. The speed laces helped a lot and the boots got better in the 80's, but I am still an ankle boot man. I often jumped military free fall in civilian hiking 6 inch boots, and static line. WW-2 experience shows most armies used ankle lace boots with putees or gaiters. The British even used the saem boots for their Airborne units as did infantry. Naturally the pull on boots were the most popular among the German soldiers and it was leather shortages that brought about the use of ankle boots. Great videos as always Lars. You are the TH-cam AUTHORITY on Russian and German foot wraps. Finally, I heard you mention Rob Ski of www.akoperatorsunion4774. I exchange emails with Rob, as I am an AK man all the way. Rob is to me on the AK what your are on Survial in the wilds of Russia. Two (2) first class professionals!

I bought also those footwraps from varusteleka. Did you notice there were some Finnish wool jackets also available? Marine blue and landforces grey and in good sizes also. In description didnt say but they were totally unused.

PS: I do recall the revolutionary soldiers under G. Washington wrapping their feet with wool when their feet were getting frostbitten. Almost forgot.

@@SurvivalRussia I also noticed something about these Czechoslovakian/East German footwraps,
you can wear them with the rough side facing in, if you're wearing socks. Reason why you'd want to do this is to not have the footwrap grip the boot too much when you're trying to take them off.
The German model jackboot is usually made with the rough grain inside the shaft and is an absolute pain in the ass to take your foot out when you're wearing the footwraps rough side out because it grips so much.
@@CarolusR3x Footwraps also limits the wear on socks.
@@SurvivalRussia another neat little trick you can do to stop them from unwinding when you take them out of the boots is to fold the top of your socks over them

Just a tip for the big city guys in the UK or the US. The Swiss camo is also a great citycamo pattern on a busy bar street on saturday night. Looks like somebody puked and menstruated on you. Not too far stretched from reality :-)

Lars. I have the original German WW2 instructions for footwraps, and you are 100% per Wehrmacht regulation.
The wraps you are using are East German by the way.
