Well at those times there weren't really much use for big screens as there is now since there weren't really that many games and the only thing you could do was take notes and program on PCs. But yeah, even for programming it would be good to have a bigger screen.
My first pc was ab Amstrad PC1512 with a single floppy drive and a glorious 512k of RAM. I remember so well continuously switching floppys or taking up some of the RAM as a virtual disk but it did the job.
People weren't interested in computers since they weren't out for the open and they were only for business and they were expensive. If you look closely, you'll notice that today's one of the most famous video game series, Metal Gear, came out in 1987. You chose a bad decade to mention in this comment, since Gates was trying to bring computers to our home at those times.

It's one of the deals Microsoft made with IBM in 1981. IBM was allowed to changed the name, but Microsoft was allowed to license it out to other OEMs. So it's MS-DOS with a different name.
There were some of the older transportable PC's that didn't have the time chip in them. a DS1307... (or something like that). Not sure if this one was one of them. Good times.
DOS 1.0 couldn't support directories, you just had a flat file system. I had a heavy typewriter crossed with a floppy 1.44, low density floppy disk drive.
I'm amazed by the month verification in the setup (if month >12 then repeat) Little details like that prevent bugs and, if forgotten, may cause some serious trouble to the OS
OMG! Look at this! It’s Analog Text Animations! This is because such a screen. On it, the text slowly fades out. I love this green and black style! Very Old’y
This screen has some heavy ghosting. It never occurred to me that these monochrome CRTs could be like this. You can’t comfortably play anything other than text games on that. I see the Donkey game in the folder though. And something called Humor that I’ve never heard of, I wonder what that is.

Untouched files in the directory since 1981. Nice. Kids of today don't appreciate old tech.
