I guess I might've gained over 500 IQ by now then lol. Seriously though, everytime you listen to it, you pick up something new in not only this but any NeO song.
sorry to be offtopic but does any of you know a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my password. I love any assistance you can give me
This man was about to have his entire existence being put into question by a 12 1/2 minutes song from the Clan Campbell. His constant repeating of "Hang on", "Hang on right there" or "I love that" could be an intro to a song and his Beyonce reference just provided imagery. Intra Venus next :) It's only about 7 minutes long.
Tim Charles is the violinist/clean vocalist and he's very talented. Marc "Xenoyr" Campbell is the harsh vocalist. This song has such complexities in it that it was actually picked up by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to teach their students. A short one, you say? Pretty sure all of their songs are at least 5 minutes haha.
It's worth pointing out just how insanely tight this live performance is. For such a complex song, they absolutely nail it compared to the studio version.
This song is studied at the Sydney conservatory of music for composition. Tim(violin) is classically trained. Benji(lead gtr) is from France and their new bassist(not in this video but just as good) is from Italy. The drummer, Dan Presland has a drum play though TH-cam video definitely worth checking out. Cygnus the bassist also has a play through. I’ve experienced them live 3x, they never disappoint. As good as they sound on video, there’s no comparison to live!
The irony is Xen, the lead/harsh vocalist, has stated in multiple interviews that originally he hated prog metal. He's a black metal guy through and through and his background is there (as if his vocals weren't proof enough of that). But end of the day, the band just evolved into prog especially once Tim broke out the violin and the rest as they say is history.
Welcome. They only have 3 albums, but each has amazing tracks. My favorite of their works isn't even on an album, but on their EP Sarabande To Nihil. Upon the Tongue of Eloquence is the track, and it's beautiful
They study this song at the Conservatorium in Sydney. Bona Fide masterpiece. Xen has my favorite growl in all of metal! Glad to see you react to this one finally.
I recommend the band Isis. They're one of the pioneers of Post Metal, and their music is all about the interplay between dreamy and heavy passages, and rising and falling action.
Oh wow! It finally happened! I have been waiting for this day since I discovered your channel when it was just a few days old. I hope you will listen to more of their stuff, they are so much more than just this song, that everybody listens to anyway. I suggest either Devour Me, Colossus - part 1 (for which sadly no music video exists) or the song Forget Not from their first album. I am sure others will have other great suggestions (they have never recorded a bad song ;-) ) PS: This live version is wonderful, but please do yourself the favor and listen to the studio recording. You will be able to hear each individual instrument much better, their mix is always fantastic.
I agree with the studio versions but that is prog in general really but I always suggest this one live to the reactors though as there isn't much of them live and this is about as good as you can get and it shows they can play it all live as one of the first reactors I saw do NeO stated that he didn't think it would be possible...so much talent in one band and none of it wasted :D
Oh, you had me laughing my ass off with the comment "Does he have the tightest vest on that's ever been made? Possibly. We don't know". Top shelf. Thank you sir
Ah yes, these guys are so so talented. For me, listening to them is equal parts satisfying and exhausting lol. In the best way! Glad you found your way to them.
Finally somebody is acknowledging what the bass does in this song. For me the bass is what keeps the song together, especially at the start, when the other instruments change up quite a bit, but the bass gives a nice foundation and makes the song feel not disjointed at all, which is quite the achievement imo.
you have to listen to Forget Not, its unreal. Plague Flowers is considered their best but for me its Forget Not. Pyrrhic has a really interesting interlude too which I think is worth checking out as well
My friends Vintersea opened up for NeO here in Portland OR. A couple years ago. We made front row center and we had never seen these guys before. WOW they were so good live!! If you ever get the chance.... SEE EM!! Love your channel!! Cheers!!
This band is amazing, I was waiting for this reaction. Thank you! I highly recommend you listen to more Ne Obliviscaris, you're not gonna be disappointed. Edit: I don't think they're a live band, although they're fantastic live. The songs are complex, busy, and the high quality of the mixing makes the studio version an another level of experience.
Finally!! It was about time you discovered this amazing band!! :) I've been a fan since their debut album, so since 2012, and I always recommend them to anyone who tells me they enjoy prog. You should also check out Forget Not and Intra Venus ;)
Don't expect short songs from them ;) their shortest song is almost 6 minutes. (there are shorter tracks, but they are parts of songs) You can try Intra Venus, it's only 7:30 ;)
NeO is my favourite prog metal band if not favourite band in general. and im so glad other people are discovering them. I'm so glad you watched the love version and not the studio version
Ne Obliviscaris is probably my favorite band I've discovered in the last 10 years. Pretty much every single song from their discography is amazing, but those that stand out in my book are: Painters of the Tempest - Part II - Triptych Lux Devour Me, Colossus - Part I - Blackholes Forget Not Of Petrichor Weaves Black Noise Eyrie Intra Venus
Forgot to mention, what a great analysis! Your musical knowledge is vastly greater than mine, so it's really nice listening to you breaking down the song structure. Keep it up!
Hence why we've been requesting this group for months now. One thing to note, this isn't like one of those single songs that is the only song similar to it on an album. True, it's their most popular song, but they don't make short radio hits. Most of their songs are in the 7-10min range. And the only ones that are shorter are Pt 1 or 2 of a set.
So glad you finally got around to checking out NeO. Amazing band. If you want to see more of the drummer, Dan Presland has a youtube channel with drum playthroughs of their songs.
Whats even crazier is that this was like the last song they played in this concert im pretty sure they've been playing for over an hour. So the fact that they're playing this with no fatigue is INSANE
Yes! Finally! Liking before watching. So looking forward to this one! Edit after watching: I love some of the moments in this reaction! Tightest vest ever, hips like Beyonce, a lot a lot a lot. 😆 They certainly are a lot and I have to be in a particular mood when listening to them, but their albums are among my favs to just put on and listen through the whole thing. Hope to see more reactions to them! Thanks for the Colorado shout-out 😄 Go Avs! 🏒🏔️ And Broncos! 🏈🐴
This song is part of the curriculum of the Composition course at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music...these guys are no joke, incredible musicians whose work transcends genre.
I think you heard it right. Ive seen a few "interviews" of this song but none could explain the technicalities like you did. First ive seen of your channel but you seem like a serious instrumentalist. Im a guitar player of 20 years and could never play this song and you actually managed to say the reasons why its difficult
"A shorter song" ...ahhhhh....about that .... NeO is one of those bands that I really hope more people get to experience, their work is phenomenal - and I hope they get the popularity and exposure they deserve. They're a local band for me, and I was introduced to them years ago when they opened for Soilwork - I think it's the only concert I've been to where I left needing to know who the opening act was, because I enjoyed them more the the main act (not a slur at Soilwork either! They were just so great live). The hardest part is remembering their damned name, I was lucky enough that one of my friends not only was there at the concert but already knew the band. If you're curious, the drummer Dan Presland has a TH-cam channel where he show some of his exercises as well as practice sessions and some concerts from the GoPro and other drum cams - the mix is also more drum centric. Really impressive stuff. Other songs. Well, this is my favourite by far. Though I think everything off Portal of I is brillaint. From other albums check out Eyrie (11 minutes), Intra Venus (7 minutes), Pyrrhic (9 minutes), Devour me, Colossus Part I (12 minutes), Of the Leper Butterflies (5 minutes), and Urn pt II: As Embers Dance in Our Eyes (6 minutes) EDIT: Also the song Curator (5 minutes) They're really a band where albums are important to listen to as a whole, I find. If you're looking for something different, I can't recall if I've ever suggested Melting Sun IV: Jade Fields by Lantlos? I describe the album as a summer day dream...but metal
Being from Melbourne Australia, I can tell you with confidence that attending a Ne Obliviscaris concert is physically pretty equivalent to running a marathon while being punched in the face every hundred metres.
These guys are my favourite. You should check out Eyrie and Devour me Colossus. Also check out this band please. WILDERUN - O Resolution!- I think you will find them interesting also for me Album of the year 2019- was Wilderun --Viel of Imagination. Album of the Year 2018- Rivers of Nihil -- Where Owls Know My Name
They're a band that I like to play at work when I need to focus on what I'm doing but want some intense music in the background. I think Intra Venus is the other big song I've seen people react to and it's pretty good. Can't say I can really name too many more even though I've listened to a bunch.
Forget not Even though we only have the studio version is one that I've watched a couple of reactions Another one that I've watched people react to is Curator but I would not recommend that one, being only a part of a bigger composition "Painters of the Tempest" For me, it would be like reacting to the We were here part from The Greatest show on Earth by Nightwish
Blimey. Just managed to catch up with this and, wow. Bugger the rest of the band, that bassist is AWESOME. Off now to see what Elizabeth thinks of it...
I've listened to this song at least 100 times and I'm still finding new stuff. Chase, you did great. One thing I noticed this time is the bassist was carrying melody for the clean vocals towards the end (possibly the whole thing, but the bassist was ripping it throughout, so I digress).
He’s great but, as a violinist myself when you hear, in the beginning when the note whines, goes off tone and goes quiet all I can think of is one of my tutors saying “MORE POWER! ROSIN YOUR BOW!” It tends to accidentally occur from not enough pressure or rosin on the bow strings to get a good enough grip on the string to make a smooth sound.. Like I said, I’m sure it’s purposeful, he’s very talented I could only get that accidentally or without the amount of control. Seriously skilled violinist.
Me: “oh he’s reacting to Ne Obliviscarus, yes please” then every minute as he comments “but wait”... then such satisfaction as the next section kicks in.
I can answer this one. 😂 Yes. Statistically, 1 out of every 10 people in the world is left handed. On top of that, a lot of natural lefties learn guitar right handed because left handed models aren't as commonly manufactured as right handed models. I think when I did this video I was surprised by more than one lefty as well.
@@TankTheTech Same thing with drummers. Chris Adler (formerly of Lamb of God) is a lefty, but plays right handed. If 1 out of 10 people are left handed, only 1 out of 10 left handed drummers actually play left handed. Wouldn't surprise me if that number actually is real :P
@@TankTheTech we had a blind indigenous musician in Australia who was left handed and he learned to play a right handed guitar upside down and stayed with this technique for his whole career. th-cam.com/video/x8-YMpYbRqY/w-d-xo.html
I've discovered a few new bands trough Chase's channel that I enjoy so much right now that I'm always interested to see more. Some of them because Chase pointed out details that made the music interesting. Is this a band for me? Not sure, but definitely worth another listen.
I'd suggest the songs "Eyrie", "Forget Not" and "Intra Venus" if you decide to check out more songs from Ne Obliviscaris. The latter is one of their shortest songs (although still 7:30 minutes), so it's probably the easiest to start of with.
Chase that was a gorgeous reaction. I love Your face expresion. This song has a very complex structure (this whole video is a one song) and I'm so glad that You want to shear Your knowlege (I hope this video wasn't export four day). Maybe it's only me but guitar in the solo sound like a violin. Whole musicianship is fantastic. Dan Presland (drummer) do a great drumming video to this song.
Been waiting for you to react to NeO. They are extremely talented and amazing live. Please react to more, most reactors only do this song. Intra Venus, Forget Not, Eyerie and Devour Me Colossus are some of my favorites but every single song on their albums are stellar.
Love the reaction and some very keen observations for a first time listen to such a complex song ! I think good options for something shorter are - Intra Venus (full song) and Curator (one movement from a longer piece). Both are great! And - Forget Not is a must hear as well.
Sooner or later, Ne Obliviscaris was gonna happen :-) Now if you want some king of less screamy and busy prog, go for Green Carnation playing "My Dark Reflections of Life and Death", live at Caledonien Hall.
Really nice reaction!! The moment you realised it was 12 min long killed me hahahaha. I think you should check out Code Orange - Swallowing the rabbit whole or Dying Fetus - Your Treachery Wilk Die with You. Best regards!!
If you think this was a whole lot of a whole lot, this is one of their "shorter" songs. If you really want a whole lot of a whole lot (and an amazing lot!) Check out Devour Me, Colossus (Pt. 1 Blackholes) or Painters of the Tempest (Pt. 2: Triptych Lux). Especially if you enjoy bass, those two have some of the most incredible basswork you will ever hear.
i can give a personal suggestion about this song.first time i listened to it it didn't hit me, i thought it was good but that maybe was not my kind of song. do this: lay down, turn off the lights, put the headphones and imagine a very passionate tango of 2 people dancing on the surface of the sea. let the song hit you when it gets heavier, you are gonna fall in love :)
Ill say tho, ppl arent mentioning that this song has old school American vibes even tho its Australian. Its like a mix of American Folk, Metal, and Jazz. Very interesting.
"Whenever I hear this song I feel like I gained +5 IQ."
Shout out to the free thinkers
I guess I might've gained over 500 IQ by now then lol. Seriously though, everytime you listen to it, you pick up something new in not only this but any NeO song.
sorry to be offtopic but does any of you know a trick to log back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot my password. I love any assistance you can give me
You're the first person I've watched do a reaction that actually picks up that the violinist tremolo picks with the guitars. What a band.
I can just imagine him going off when both Tim and Benji do their guitar/violin duel 😉
Juliette you're always a class act 👌🙏🤲
😊👌
After Intra Venus he can go to Triptych Lux Part II. It's only like 16 1/2 minutes long 😎
Tim Charles is the violinist/clean vocalist and he's very talented. Marc "Xenoyr" Campbell is the harsh vocalist. This song has such complexities in it that it was actually picked up by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to teach their students.
A short one, you say? Pretty sure all of their songs are at least 5 minutes haha.
Xen also writes 5years lyrics, does all the artworks and produced/directed the recent two video clips. Quite talented as well.😎
It's worth pointing out just how insanely tight this live performance is. For such a complex song, they absolutely nail it compared to the studio version.
Yes, this is a very, very good rendition of the studio version.
Real performing artists
This song is studied at the Sydney conservatory of music for composition. Tim(violin) is classically trained. I wouldnt really even call em prog. They do have the long songs w time shifts, modal changes etc but they totally outclass typical prog bands
@@Zmej420BlazeIt Well that's what prog is. I think leaving it at extreme progressive metal is most accurate
They study this song at the Conservatorium in Sydney. Bona Fide masterpiece. Xen has my favorite growl in all of metal! Glad to see you react to this one finally.
I love this band.
I love the "hang on.... what's going on here?" as if it was some sort of illegal activity hahahaha
I’ve never heard music so simultaneously chill and aggressive before. What a great unique sound.
I recommend the band Isis. They're one of the pioneers of Post Metal, and their music is all about the interplay between dreamy and heavy passages, and rising and falling action.
This isn't music you listen to; it's music you get lost into. Glad you picked the live version and enjoyed it! Great analysis as always
Despite the little "mistake" by the sound guy near the end and the mixing being far from awesome it's still a great perfomance
@@franciscoborjaescobarsuare5802 i'd hate to be the sound guy for their live shows.
@@jimz6850 Yeah but it's better than being the sound guy for bands like Eluveitie, Faun, Heilung or In Extremo

Just insane

Ah yes, these guys are so so talented. For me, listening to them is equal parts satisfying and exhausting lol. In the best way! Glad you found your way to them.
Killer bassline especially when that double bass kicked in. Very tight live performance!!
Finally somebody is acknowledging what the bass does in this song. For me the bass is what keeps the song together, especially at the start, when the other instruments change up quite a bit, but the bass gives a nice foundation and makes the song feel not disjointed at all, which is quite the achievement imo.

Yes, I bet he's not going for clean classical sound. It sounds a bit dirty and decadent, which serves the song perfectly.
well thanks for that violin knowledge. clean vs dirty sounding violin. something i never would have thought about :)
Not sure how many other channels you watch, but garrettmillerdrums does a great review of a drum playthrough. Awesome video!
Me: “oh he’s reacting to Ne Obliviscarus, yes please” then every minute as he comments “but wait”... then such satisfaction as the next section kicks in.
Intra Venus is next, is shorter and also very cool.
Thank you : )
Fun fact... Wintersun and Ne Obliviscaris toured together (I think it was) in 2018 in USA.
Unfun Fact: I missed it.
Unusual to have more than one left-hander in one band, Chase?
I can answer this one. 😂
Yes.
@@TankTheTech Hey is it me or does the lead guitar have a violin-like tone to it? How do they do that?
@@TankTheTech I'm a lefty too, but I had to adapt to use my right for most things.
Not sure, but definitely worth another listen.
i think that's totally fair. we can't like everything. What are some of your fav discoveries thru this channel?
@@rocioiribe5841 Without one doubt my top 3 is: on one The Hu, close second : Unlease the Archers third: Eskimo Callboy.
I'd suggest the songs "Eyrie", "Forget Not" and "Intra Venus" if you decide to check out more songs from Ne Obliviscaris. The latter is one of their shortest songs (although still 7:30 minutes), so it's probably the easiest to start of with.
@@C0reyTaylor8 Thanks, I will start there.
8:15 : I've seen 3 or 4 first reactions to this song, and each one of you had the exact same reaction when the vocal kicks in lol
FINALLLY BUDDY!!!
About time this happened.
Been waiting for you to react to NeO. They are extremely talented and amazing live. Please react to more, most reactors only do this song. Intra Venus, Forget Not, Eyerie and Devour Me Colossus are some of my favorites but every single song on their albums are stellar.
hey, i looked for the live reaction, but didn't find it, so watching after the fact.
Love the reaction and some very keen observations for a first time listen to such a complex song !
I think good options for something shorter are - Intra Venus (full song) and Curator (one movement from a longer piece). Both are great!
And - Forget Not is a must hear as well.
yeah because their shortest song isn't* anything too amazing, i still like all their songs though
Sooner or later, Ne Obliviscaris was gonna happen :-) Now if you want some king of less screamy and busy prog, go for Green Carnation playing "My Dark Reflections of Life and Death", live at Caledonien Hall.
How many times can Chase be stunned in 12 minutes, a test........
Finally!!! Welcome!!!! And enjoy the ride... Intra Venus next
Finally this reaction! Excellent. I suggest you try next "Heilung - Krigsgaldr (LIFA Live)", very different approach to "metal" music.
i can give a personal suggestion about this song.first time i listened to it it didn't hit me, i thought it was good but that maybe was not my kind of song. do this: lay down, turn off the lights, put the headphones and imagine a very passionate tango of 2 people dancing on the surface of the sea. let the song hit you when it gets heavier, you are gonna fall in love :)
Ill say tho, ppl arent mentioning that this song has old school American vibes even tho its Australian. Its like a mix of American Folk, Metal, and Jazz. Very interesting.
