  • Welcome to the podcast with Dr. Brendan McCarthy! Serotonin is one of the most widely recognized of all neurotransmitters. It is intricately involved in numerous core physical processes such as the regulation of sleep, appetite, and aggression. Serotonin is also a key player in mood, anxiety, fear and a general sense of well-being. Many things can lead to low serotonin and in this episode we will be covering some of those causes.
Dr. Brendan McCarthy founded Protea Medical Center in 2002. While he’s been the chief medical officer, Protea has grown and evolved into a dynamic medical center serving the Valley and Central Arizona. A nationally recognized as an expert in hormone replacement therapy, Dr McCarthy s the only instructor in the nation who teaches BioHRT on live patients. Physicians travel to Arizona to take his course and integrate it into their own practices. Besides hormone replacement therapy, Dr. McCarthy has spoken nationally and locally before physicians on topics such as weight loss, infertility, nutritional therapy and more.

Wow this video is so fascinating. For the last two months I’ve experienced morning nausea, lack of appetite, irregular bowels, 2 panic attacks, (never had in my 40 yrs) I have tension all over my body, racing thoughts. I have cptsd, which I’ve been in therapy for the past 3 years. I started trying to diagnose myself bc doctors don’t want to do these simple blood tests to test for nutritional deficiencies or hormonal imbalances. I’ve done low carb for the past 7 years and had very slow weight loss process. Unable to lose even 10lbs in a year. In the last two months I’ve lost 20lbs. Maybe 2lbs a week. I’m now 185lbs. I eat loads of protein and good quality fats and veggies. I’ve had a mirena iud going on 7.5 years now and I think after hearing this video it’s time is up and has caused these issues. Some more bloodwork will tell if my progesterone is high, but it’s been out of whack before I had this thing bc of PCOS. So somehow this has got to be all tied together. I don’t know which doctor to see as I first got in with a GI specialist and she wanted to do such invasive procedures before simple bloodwork.

Good video. Thank you for the info as I've been down the rabbit hole to self treat after being failed and stigmatized by so many doctors.

🇯🇲 Answers finally!!! There's hope!!! Thank you so very much. Thank you for the way you made sense of everything. I regret not being able to see you.
I only realize today that I'm experiencing chronic depression and that it could possibly be due to low seratonin levels. I've been having these symptoms for a while now but didn't realize it to be depression. In doing a little questionnaire with 12 questions of symptoms to determine whether one is physiologically depressed I ranked 11 out of 12. What's interesting is that my sister shows signs as well as my son nevertheless we function (beginning to believe on "fumes").
Thanks for the care with which you informed us. I noticed though that no mention was made of dopamine in the conversation, does it not play a role?
    ..... Much Blessings

My issue is im 52 male and ive suffered from i guess it what you would call anhedonia for the past 4 or so years....all my physicals and blood work come back good and this past year my testosterone was a little low so we tried TRT which really hasn't done anything and it's miserable living this way because im a single dad too two kids...i really don't have any stress in life to be honest just no energy always fatigued with zero motivation to do the things i use to enjoy and just doing normal task are very hard most times to do....i know myself pretty well and there's something not right because i used to be very outgoing motivated and a get it done kinda of person....im actually lost as to what could be going on.

Wow that's interesting..I'm feeling great as I use transdermal progesterone..at 10 percent ...it does help my mood tremendously as my estrogen was high in the test...that's why it really helps to get these testings...
I do 1000mg of taurine each night and it helps me sleep and helps the liver get rid of excess estrogen..and I'm happy to remain on the taurine as I'm mostly vegan and it can be hard to get enough taurine.....trying a grounding mat for sleep so hope it helps....when it arrives in mail 😊

Thank you these are very informative. I find over the years since post menopause I have to see 3-4 different doctors sometimes simultaneously which is very frustrating not to mention expensive. One doctor will know Estrogen, one testosterone, one thyroid, etc. But really how can one know one and not the rest since they all work together. One I spend a lot of money on that is supposed to be looking at the big picture but after 3.5 years I'm no better off and have a lot less money. I messaged your practice.

Can you describe your protocol on measuring serotonin levels? You can draw serum serotonin for levels in blood but how do you know if your brain has enough?

    • @Dr.BrendanMcCarthy
      @Dr.BrendanMcCarthy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is a supportive test to help confirm the deficit. It is not neural specific, meaning it is not a great lab to monitor serotonin specific to the brain. When a person is on an SSRI the serum serotonin will not be a good indicator. In the case of a MTHFR issue, you could see a system wide deficit of serotonin. This would be helpful when figuring out how much the dose of Methyl folate is working. This is one of the most tricky things to treat in my opinion because you want to get the patient as much objective data (labs) as you can gather to help establish if the therapy you are using is having a biological effect. In the case of serotonin deficiency we need to see that testing is not going to be a perfect image of neural levels. It is just helpful.

Hi Dr Brendan, what if someone like me couldn't tolerate methyl folate (not even 400mcg) and I have 2 copies of c677t, what would you suggest to improve methylation?

Can any of these symptoms cause body vibrations (tremors) while trying to sleep? I’ve been experiencing this for about 2 months now and my Dr says it’s due to anxiety.

Isn't this a little simplistic? Surely, serotonin production in the intestines is mainly used for intestinal functions and not transferred to the neurotransmitters in the brain; the brain produces its own serotonin? - hence low amounts in the gut, is no indication of brain serotonin. There is no test to know how much serotonin is in the brain, just the gut - a test, for cancer, nothing else. Is not low serotonin an indication of VitB production versus melatonin - one or the other produced, as well as Vitamin D? Kindly refer me to a link proving serotonin production in the gut and depression. Also, the issue is not just serotonin levels but the amount of transmitters, the effective firing of synapses, proper re-uptake, etc. Simply the volume of the chemical itself, is not the cause of mood. Don't believe what you are saying overall and the Chemical imbalance theory is less believed today.

What kind of Dr do we need to go to to get all of this checked out? I know that I have one mthfr mutation and I have several other issues you mentioned but don't know where to start.

I have met more and more psychiatrists looking at mental health this way. There is a psychiatric nurse practitioner who practices in an EMDR clinic that I love working with. I know that may not help where you are, I just want to let you know that it is changing, slowly. The best advice I have is to reach out to the clinic you want to go to and ask in advance about how they treat serotonin based depression.
