This is timely and uniquely insightful presentation on that ever so strangely ( or not ? ) avoided topic within the “ free world “ academic circles. How brilliant of prof. Thompson is to underscore the differences between the British imperial colonialism and the Russian imperial ( white and red ) colonialism - a degree of pragmatic economic utility in the first one and the ostentatious show-off consumption in the second . However , there is another aspect of colonialism , any colonialism , past and present , and the future : it creates an idle rentiers class , the super wealthy class which is naturally ( or unnaturally ? ) politically influential, inevitably evolving into a dominant power or oligarchy, inevitably resulting in an economic and political disintegration, a collapse . Both the British imperial colonialism and the Russian imperial colonialism in the end impoverished also their own people - right now both the British subjects and the Russians citizens are poor, the difference is in degree only.
Sorry to disappoint you guys, but it looks like our esteemed professor of Rice University badly needs refreshing and expanding her very limited knowledge of history, geografy, and - last but not least - Russian literature. Frankly speaking, I'm not in the habit of delivering lectures for free - I make a living teaching students, and value my time, - but, as a kind of exception, I could say a word or two on a/v subjects. Firstly (starting from 4:00 in the video), Mrs Thompson insists that the two largest coolinail empires are the British and the Russian....Sad to say that, but obviously Mrs Thompson must have been playing truant during her school and University years, for there were far larger empires, in terms of territories, population, and natural resourses, than the Russian Empire, i.e. The Spanish, The French, and (maybe) The Ottoman; and we are not talking about any kind of interpretations here - we are talking about plain and indisputable geographical and historical facts, such as times, places, and numbers (of square kilometers and inhabitants of certain territories). Secondly - and insultingly unprofessional, - Mrs Thompson, looking to support some of her exotic ideas concerning Russian colonialism, suddenly decides to venture into what appears to be Terra Incognita for her - into the realm of Great Russian Literature, where no scholar should enter unarmed. With at least basic understanding of what he or she is talking about. Alas!

Here you go: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ewa_Thompson
Big thanks to Ewa for deep understanding of russia's nature, of its innate imperialism, absence of democracy and humanity.
Many thanks!

Это из какой лекции?
What is her REAL surname?
Google (Wikipedia) says Ewa M. Thompson (born Ewa Majewska; 1937 in Kaunas)
