The Gazela, mentioned in this video at about the 8 minute mark, is still afloat and is the Official Tall Ship of Philadelphia. She was built in 1901 and is owned and operated by the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild. You can help keep her afloat and her history alive for the world by supporting the Guild!

This was a sustainable fishery. The grand banks were white with cod. These people shared their culture and wine and music with us for 500 years. They were brave hardworking people who fished alongside the Spanish and the original Newfoundlanders. And a huge part of our culture. There was more than enough for everyone.
Untill the 70's that is: when the huge factory ships showed up from Russia adn Asia, with their drag nets scooping everything in sight. And oil industry arrived, frakking the ocean floor oil. THAT's what killed the fishery, NOT these few thousand men hand catching cod at great risk to life and limb. Unfortunately, much easier for the Canadian gov't to harass these people, than the megapowers like the US or USSR, it made them look like they were doing something about it.
And once the oil runs out, well...

I am reading The Quest of the Schooner Argus, copyright 1951 by Alan Villiers, who wrote many books about life in the days of sail. This book is about these fishermen, their ships, captains, and lives. This narrative agrees in every detail with Villiers' book. Villiers, a sailor on sailing ships for 20 years, wrote this book after doing a season on the Argus, a ship like the one on this video. I didn't hear this narrator mention that dories have no rudders. You can see that. Miraculously, as Villiers explains, very few dorymen perish while fishing, even in rough seas, fog, getting lost sometimes for many days. Villiers believes there are no better seagoing boatmen in the world. A fairly good season's catch on the Argus was 12,000 quintals. A quintal is 60kg (about 120 pounds) of salted cod. (The fish loses weight when salted.) On a good day of fishing, 400 quintals is not unusual. Bad weather sometimes keeps the dorymen on the ship for many days during a season. They hate it when that happens.

Benny the Jet There are reports of Portuguese fishermen in Newfoundland since the 16th century (and probably the 15th), but I understand what you mean...
